The Star Thursday May 16 2019 news online at www.star.kiwi Meat found on vegan pizza • By Katie Harris DOMINO’S PIZZA has apologised for meat found on a vegan pizza. Kate Williams ordered two vegan pizzas from Domino’s Rolleston, but when they arrived, she and her husband discovered what looked like several pieces of meat on both of the pizzas. “I noticed the first piece of meat sitting out in the open, then two more that were easily discernible. I grabbed a fork and checked under the bits of mushroom and spinach, and realised that there were at least seven pieces on just the one pizza,” she said. The pair returned to the store, where a staff member apologised and they were offered a replacement pizza and a dessert, which was also not vegan. Mrs Williams said she and her husband were shocked that the meat was added to their pizza topping and no one in the store noticed. “I find it very hard to reconcile that someone could miss that much meat being accidentally added while preparing a vegan pizza,” she said. Though they had not eaten the meat, she said it was hard handling “pieces of flesh.” Mrs Williams posted her experience on the Vegans of DISCOVERY: Meat was found on a vegan pizza from Rolleston Domino’s. Aotearoa New Zealand Facebook page and her story got more than 78 comments and 80 reactions. The experience made Mrs Williams and her husband, who are committed vegans, question going to non-vegan restaurants for fear of cross-contamination or this happening again. “I would still like to support non-vegan establishments who are now providing vegan options, but if they cannot be bothered to ensure a reasonable level of care and knowledge by their staff when preparing this, then they should not be offering them,” she said. A spokesperson from Domino’s New Zealand said it had clearly let its customers down, which was disappointing. “We pride ourselves on offering our vegan customers choice, something we are very passionate about.” The spokesperson said Domino’s has strict food handling processes and will be educating and retraining the staff members involved. THIS WEEK, Canterbury University hosted the start of what will be an important conversation about the options that could be developed for the future ownership and governance of the Otakaro Avon River Corridor (formerly known as the residential red zone). I know there are strong opinions about these matters. That’s good. Every person I’ve talked to wants the best for the city and in terms of our place at the centre of the South Island, what that means to our region and beyond. I am personally interested in hearing all the pros and cons of the different options and finding ways of taking these into the wider community, so that we can fully engage across the city in a meaningful way, where the exchange of ideas is encouraged and nobody is excluded from freely expressing alternative views. Mayor Lianne Dalziel NEWS 23 Views sought on future of Otakaro Avon River Corridor In my view there is not a single right answer to any of the questions that can be raised in relationship to ownership, governance and the need to attract investment beyond central and local government. There is a lot to be done before decisions need to be made as well – making decisions about infrastructure, including roads, pipes and stopbanks and amalgamating titles – so we have plenty of time for this conversation. And this is an inter-generational series of projects, and we could use the transition to test future governance arrangements. Anyway food for thought.
