Woman hospitalised after suspicious blaze

person is now being treated as
suspicious.

WHEN JACQUELINE Doherty
was 15, she fell in love with
acting and has since set her sights
on New York to check out its
booming theatre scene.
Now, the 20-year-old of
Burnside will pack her bags
to head over for a 10-week
prestigious acting programme on
Saturday.
She was “shocked but excited”
when she
found out
she was
selected to
take part in
a course at
Stella Adler
Studio of
Acting, where
Robert De
Niro studied
before he
became
a two-time Academy Award
winner.
He won best supporting actor
in 1975 for the role of Vito
Corleone in The Godfather Part
II and best actor for playing Jake
LaMotta in Raging Bull in 1981.
“New York is the hub of
theatre, so I always knew I
wanted to go over at some point
. . . but to do an acting course
there is just the best of both
worlds,” Doherty said.
She is looking forward to
developing her acting skills and
hopes the course will give her an
idea of where she will go next in
her career.
Doherty usually sticks to
musical theatre, but said this will
help her to “branch out into all
different types of acting.”

“As I went through high
school I was doing a lot of music.
Eventually, my love for music
turned into a love for musical
theatre,” she said.
Her most challenging
performances were in Les
Misérables last year and Spring
Awakening in 2017, which
inspired her to work harder and
develop as an actor.
“Those two performances were
the most memorable moments
of what made me want to keep
going with this,” she said.
Doherty has been saving
money for the trip through her
job as a law secretary.
She also received a $3000 grant
from the Inspire Foundation,
which is a charity dedicated
to supporting Canterbury and
Marlborough’s young talent.

FENZ fire investigator Jason
Hobbs said she was “very lucky”
to only have smoke inhalation
after arriving home to find the
fire and entering the house to
try and put it out.
There was one smoke alarm in
house but it was not operating
properly.
Mr Hobbs said the fire is a
timely reminder to have working
smoke alarms and if you
discover fire in your house,
evacuate.
Three fire crews were called to
the blaze.

Firearm presented in
service station robbery
Two robberies, one in
Woolston and one in the
central city, on Tuesday
night are being investigated
by police. A masked man
entered Mobil Woolston at
9pm armed with a sawn-off
shotgun and stole money.
The offender has not yet been
located. No one was injured
during the incident. Another
incident took place on Cashel
St near Fitzgerald Ave at about
5pm. A man was reported to
have been punched and his bag
stolen. A police spokeswoman
said the whereabouts of the
victim and the male suspect
were unknown.
Man in serious
condition after assault
A man was taken to hospital
with serious injuries following
an assault on Riccarton Rd
on Sunday. A spokesman said
police received a report
of a man lying on the ground
near McDonalds at 6.30pm.
St John spokesman Gerard
Campbell confirmed the man
had been taken to hospital in
serious condition. Inquiries
into the incident are under
way.
Community centre
designs revealed
Designs for the St Albans
Community Centre have
been revealed, with
construction set to begin
in a few months. A singlestorey
building with modern
timber and glass facade will
be built at the same site as
the old community centre
between Colombo St and
Caledonian Rd. Inside, it will
have 400 sq m of floor space,
including a hall and other
facilities. The detailed design is
being finalised before the city
council applies for building and
resource consents. The building
is expected to be completed
next year.
