PEAK TIME traffic is causing
IT’S ALL about getting the timing right.
What I mean is dodging the gridlock that
is Halswell Rd and Lincoln Rd, particularly
in the morning.
On page 1 today we reveal Orange Line
and No 60 bus patrons have a relatively long wait for action, which
might involve bus lanes. The city council has earmarked the
2020/2021 year as a potential time frame. Many are not happy.
In the meantime, if you do take the bus here’s a tip. Get out of
bed a bit earlier and get on the bus before traffic builds up.
Painful in winter but it does work. I drive and I know there is a
15min window which means getting to work on time or late.
Call for policy after bottle store fight
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A LONG battle to stop an
off-licence liquor store from
going into Halswell has raised
questions over why the city
doesn’t have its own Local
Alcohol Policy.
THe Halswell Residents’
Association has requested the
city council develops its LAP
policy after appealing against
the decision allowing Bottle-O
Halswell to open a store at 29
Ensign St.
THe association’s secretary
David Hawke said the drawnout
process has highlighted
“significant deficiencies” in
alcohol inspectors and the
knowledge base of agencies and
district licensing committee
members.
“THe alcohol licensing
managers and their staff are
forced to rely on the general
provision of the Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act 2012 in framing
their recommendations on each
licence application.”
Mr Hawke said the act is very
high level and the objectors have
no real guidance as to whether
they are wasting their time
or if they have a chance in a
successful appeal.
“THe same is true of potential
applicants, they have only the act
TIRED: A fight to stop an off-licence liquor store from opening
in Halswell has a residents’ association questioning why the
city doesn’t have a Local Alcohol Policy.
to guide them in preparing their
business case,” he said.
THe city council began
developing a draft LAP in 2013
but decided not to continue with
the process last year.
City council’s head of strategic
policy Emma Davis said it
instead resolved background
work on the issue including
identifying any alcohol-related
harm issues should continue.
THis information will form a
report which will be provided
in the new term following the
October elections which will
determine if a LAP is the best
tool to address alcohol-related
harm.
In December, Bottle-O
Halswell Ltd was granted an
application to open the store, but
the decision was appealed by the
association.
THe hearing for the appeal will
be held on July 30.
In March, Southern View
reported Bottle-O Halswell Ltd
was negotiating to lease the
premises on 29 Ensign St instead
of buying it.
Director and shareholder
Wendy Gibbons did not respond
to confirm if it would be leasing
the premises.
Mr Hawke said the appeal
against the bottle store had
forced the association to be sidelined
from doing other projects
in the community since August
last year.
“It is more than time as well.
It is people’s headspace. It has
had a major effect on us that’s for
sure,” he said.
Under The Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act 2012, a LAP can
allow for communities to limit
the locations of licences in areas
or near certain types of facilities
such as schools or churches.
Conditions can be imposed
on groups of licences, such as a
“one-way door” condition which
allows patrons to leave premises
but not enter or re-enter after a
certain time.
Ranulph Fiennes has travelled to the most dangerous and
His most recent challenge was scaling the north face of the Eiger, one of the most awesome
A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home
By Tembi Locke
A poignant and transporting cross-cultural love story set against
the lush backdrop of the Sicilian countryside, where one woman
discovers the healing powers of food, family, and unexpected
just one problem: Saro’s traditional Sicilian family did not approve
of him marrying a black American woman, an actress no less.
However, the couple, heartbroken but undeterred, forges on. They
build a happy life in Los Angeles, with fulfilling careers, deep
friendships and the love of their lives: a baby girl they adopt at
birth. Eventually, they reconcile with Saro’s family just as he faces a formidable cancer that
will consume all their dreams. From Scratch chronicles three summers Tembi spends in
Sicily with her daughter, Zoela, as she begins to piece together a life without her husband in
his tiny hometown hamlet of farmers. Where once Tembi was estranged from Saro’s family
and his origins, now she finds solace and nourishment—literally and spiritually—at her
mother in law’s table. In the Sicilian countryside, she discovers the healing gifts of simple
fresh food, the embrace of a close knit community, and timeless traditions and wisdom that
light a path forward. All along the way she reflects on her and Saro’s incredible romance—an
indelible love story that leaps off the pages.
Long wait for pedestrian crossing
• By Louis Day
REDCLIFFS residents are
disappointed a pedestrian
crossing near the entrance of
Barnett Park will not be installed
for five years.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said work on a
crossing in the area was not
scheduled until
the financial year
of 2024.
Residents
Association
president
Christine Toner
Christine
Toner
said it was far too
long to wait and
saw the absence of
a pedestrian crossing as a safety
issue.
“That is very disappointing,”
she said.
“The parents I have spoken to
talk about it being very difficult
crossing the Main Rd to get to
Barnett Park.”
There is only one other
pedestrian crossing in the area,
which is 240m away from the
entrance of the park.
Association member and
transport adviser Darren Fidler
said a pedestrian crossing in the
area would provide a vital link
between the Coastal Pathway and
the park.
“Barnett Park is obviously a
great community asset it has
some of the only public toilets
along the Coastal Pathway from
Ferrymead to when you get into
Sumner,” Dr Fidler said.
“It’s also about perceived safety,
you want to be encouraging
active modes of transport.”
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton did not see the
pedestrian crossing as a priority.
“I don’t think it [Barnett Park
pedestrian crossing] is urgent,
I think that getting the Coastal
Pathway work done around
Moncks Bay is more urgent and
that is where I have been focusing
on because there is no footpath in
that area,” she said.
Cr Templeton said both
projects could possibly be
Riccarton Rd
A PLANNED tree-planted
The median will help make
THE SUMNER Surf Life Saving
Club building’s new look has not
been well received by the public.
The building was coated with
a dark cedar stain last month to
protect the timber from decay
and mask its discolouration.
Sumner resident Lisa Humphrey
said the once golden
coloured building used to blend
perfectly with its environment.
However, she thought the
building’s new dark brown coat
made it look like an eyesore.
“It was just so beautifully
designed and bold and it slotted
in with the tussock and the sea
and then one day we walked past
and it was this brown colour,” she
said.
Sumner Surf Life Saving Club
president Glenn Fergus said they
had no option but to go with the
dark brown coat.
“With the multi-coloured
discolouration, you have got to
go with a stain. If we could have
gone any lighter we would have,”
he said.
Mr Fergus said they looked at
using a lighter product, but were
advised that it would not adhere
to the timber.
He said the building would
eventually fade back to its old
colour.
“Over time it will fade away
Mrs Humphrey posted on the
Sumner Community Facebook
group to see if other people
shared her feelings on the
makeover.
“It looks like a really old
dated building now, absolutely
awful. I had my 40th birthday
there a couple of years ago as
it was a previously lovely looking
building,” one person responded.
“The person who changed it
“I took the dog for a walk on
on. Linwood College English language
learners and international
students head of department
Christa White said the event
would show off a number of
different cultures and improve
understanding of these cultures.
Bringing people together would
be particularly beneficial for the
Linwood community, which had
been left shaken after the March
15 mosque shootings at Linwood
Islamic Centre and Al Noor
Mosque on Deans Ave, said Mrs
White.
“Because of March 15, we’ve
invited more of the community,”
she said.
This was about “giving them
some space to just be together in
happier circumstances.”
Mrs White said about 850 people
from more than 50 nationalities
were expected.
Traditional performances
from students from countries
including the Philippines, India,
Samoa, Tonga and China, she
said.
The day would begin at
12.30pm with students and pupils
marching in a parade alongside
the flags of the countries
they identified with.
There would also be a wide
range of food from different
countries to sample.
Christchurch East MP Poto
Boys’ bike business taking off
• By Matt Slaughter
NEGLECTED, unroadworthy
bikes are being repaired and
sold at affordable prices by three
Haeata Community Campus
students.
Year 10 students Cyprus
Rangirangi and Dylan Hyde
and year 8 Brayden Chalmers-
Carr are in the process of
refurbishing 21 donated bikes.
So far this term they had fixed
four bikes and sold two.
The boys’ teacher Rodney
Flavell said each bike had been
sold for between $20 and $30.
Brayden said: “If one of my
friend’s bike breaks down, then
we can help each other.” He
loved this about the project.
Cyprus said: “I just like
biking and my bike breaks a
lot.’’
He was thankful for the opportunity
to learn how to fix it.
Selling the bikes felt “good
because I’m helping people,” he
said.
Dylan said he had enjoyed
working as a team and he’d got
more out of the project than he
first expected.
“I didn’t realise that people
were going to buy them, but I
guess it felt good when people
bought them.”
Brayden, Cyprus and Dylan
said their goal was to fix and
sell enough to be able to afford
their own BMX bikes.
The bikes being repaired were
donated by Sergeant Steve Sibley
and the Aranui Neighbourhood
Policing Team.
Sergeant Sibley said the
project was valuable because it
had the potential to reduce the
number of students who were
dropped off at Haeata by their
parents.
“The goal is hopefully to get
FUNDRAISER: Hornby High School teacher Juliet
Buenaventura and her band performing a Filipino song.
more kids on bikes and more
people on bikes so it’s a bit
more of a healthy environment,
because very few bike.”
He said it gave the three boys
involved a real sense of purpose
and saved bikes, which were
unable to be returned to their
original owners and would
otherwise be dumped.
Mr Flavell reached out to
Sergeant Sibley to support their
project after he noticed the
boys’ passion for BMX.
HORNBY HIGH School has
showcased its brightest talent
to help fundraise for those
impacted by the Christchurch
terror attacks.
The concert, organised by the
school’s team of prefects has
raised more than $530.
The money will go towards
supporting the family of the
Springs Rd Dairy, an affected
family at the school and for a
man who works at GAS Hornby.
Prefect Shardey Jade, 17, said it
wanted to show how important
it was to bring the school together
to support those affected.
“With their love of bikes,
we had an opportunity to
work with the police and
get them a bit of cash so they
could buy paint and chains
and stuff like that. That was
how these guys got into it and
how they’re helping out the
community.”
As part of their learning, they
have had to research the skills
and tools needed to fix the bikes
and order the parts needed to
do this.
Concert for a cause
“Every term we have made a
goal to run events. Our goal was
to arrange a fundraiser so we
could bring the Hornby community
together,” she said.
The Hornby community was
hugely affected by the attacks.
The owner of the Springs Rd
Dairy, Junaid Ismail died at
Majhid Al Noor on March 15.
A father of a student at
Hornby High School and a man
who works at GAS Hornby was
injured during the attacks.
About 100 people including
the performers attended the
event. The concert featured 14
acts including performances
from the school choir.
Projects to improve
Halswell bus service
•From page 1
THe projects are anticipated to be
undertaken over the next two to three
years.
THe association’s secretary David
Hawke said making the buses faster
and more predictable has three
components.
“One of these is bus priority lanes,
another is passengers knowing
exactly when their bus will arrive,
and the remaining component is
speeding the transit of buses by
giving them priority at signalised
intersections,” he said.
Since the start of the year,
Environment Canterbury has
received four complaints over the
timeliness of the Orange Line and 60
routes.
Mr Hawke said the two projects
complement the city council’s $13
million plans to widen Lincoln Rd
between Curletts and Wrights Rds.
An Environment Canterbury
spokeswoman said the Lincoln Rd
project will improve travel times for
Orange Line passengers.
“We supported that project and it is
part of an ongoing process. We need
to get public transport priorities all
the way from Halswell right through
to the central city.”
Halswell Community Project
chairwoman Chrys Horn said the
buses are generally full at rush hour
and it would be good to see bus lanes
installed in Halswell.
“THere are no bus lanes here and
because we have grown so fast, we
have got a lot of traffic going into the
city,” she said.
Dr Horn said she prefers to cycle, but
when she has used the buses, there have
been times when they have not run on
schedule.
Last year, a Ministry of Transport
survey found public transport
in the city was the lowest in the
country with nearly two-thirds of its
population choosing to avoid the bus.
From January 2017 to January
2018, it was found only 35 per cent of
people used buses.
“We need to be quite bold in setting
it up because we have got one of the
lowest public transport user numbers
of any place in New Zealand,” Dr
Horn said.
But an ECan spokeswoman said for
the current financial year, patronage
is up 1.5 per cent.
Braun eyes national top 10
• By Jacob Page
CASHMERE HIGH School’s
Liliana Braun will head to the
national secondary schools’
cross country championships in
Timaru next month with a win
under her belt against some of
her Canterbury rivals.
She won the Canterbury
schools’ senior road race title a
fortnight ago, which just alluded
her last year and is now aiming
for a top 10 national ranking at
Timaru’s Ashbury Park on June
15.
“In year 9 and 10, I came
second so it’d be great to get
another medal in my final year,”
she said. The 17-year-old year
13 student prevailed in a time
of 10min 52sec over the 3km
course at the A&P Showgrounds
and was able to go better than
her runner-up finish in the same
event 12 months ago.
“I’ve just come off a big
training break, so I was just
seeing how I was going, but it
was good to win.”
Liliana, who is part of the Port
Hills Club, competes in athletics
over summer and cross country
in winter.
She does the 3000m and the
steeplechase on the running
track.
“I find cross country easier
because it’s more interesting, but
physically it is tougher with the
mountains and terrain,” she said.
Liliana began running when
she was in year 6 at Beckenham
championships in Timaru, next month.
for a Canterbury team, which
travelled to Wellington for an
inter-provincial meet.
“Year 8 or 9 I started training
properly and it’s been that way
ever since,” she said.
Liliana trains six days a week,
with a longer run on the weekend
for an hour in the Port Hills.
SPORT
She enjoys the varied nature
of cross country running and
began doing the steeplechase in
an effort to make running on the
track more interesting by adding
hurdles.
“I’d like to one day get to the
world junior level and see how
far I can go after that,” Braun
said.
HILLMORTON HIGH School
trampolinist Maddy Moore has
three words to motivate her and
plenty of medals to show for it.
The 13-year-old is a two-time
Canterbury champion, the reigning
Top of the South age-group
champion and hopes to add a
South Island title when she competes
at her club, Olympia Gym
Sports, on June 18.
After two years in the sport,
Maddy has 13 medals that all
hang on the words “earned, never
given” made for her by her stepfather.
She does up to 12 hours a week
of training and also plays netball
as a wing attack on the weekends.
“It does seem like a lot of training
sometimes, but when I’m
bored I think about competing at
nationals and trying to win there
and that gets me motivated.
Maddy eager for more
trampolining medals
“I look at the medals and I
realise I’ve achieved a lot but it’s
gone by so fast too,” she said.
The nationals will be held in
Auckland in October.
Maddy placed seventh last year
at the national competition.
Two years ago, she did a recreation
class and was asked if she
wanted to join a development
squad.
“I used to jump on the
trampoline at home and I used to
do cartwheels all the time,” she
said.
There are two component, a
step and a voluntary routine
during competitions.
“You want to be high in the air,
doing flips and for me, making
sure that my toes are neat when I
do them for the judges.”
She hopes she can compete
internationally next year, but is
eager to claim a national medal
first.
Centuries old folk
remedy supports
good health!
More health
benefits with
Advanced
Omega-3-PC
Fish Oil
It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good
health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the
recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with
a higher amounts of omega-3 in the diet are known to have lower
cardiovascular disease and in many cases better overall health. Recent
research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the
ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing
essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain
good health. Fish oil supplements have become hugely popular
for this reason. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3
fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish however naturally contain
omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the
phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-3-PC sets new standards in fish oil as
it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids.
Studies have shown GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC to be far better
absorbed leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the
organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-3-PC is produced from fresh wild
deep sea cold water fish using a new advanced and more natural cold
extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP standards and is
molecularly distilled to remove any containments, toxins and heavy
metals like mercury.
Further information on this revolutionary new fish oil and how
it may benefit you is available from the Natural Health Advisers,
at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 101 Seaview Road, New
that Vermonters who regularly consumed ACV and
Honey had excellent health with many putting in
a vigorous day’s work on the farm even when well
into their eighties. He also noted the effects of ACV
and H on arthritis to be remarkable with many
patients reporting almost total relief after taking a
course of the mixture. Dr. Jarvis surmised that the
acid and potassium in cider vinegar counteracted
calcium deposits and helped the body control
calcium use. He also noted that Vermonters who
consumed ACV and H around meal time had
excellent blood pressure and circulation. The reason
he found was that protein foods thickened the
blood and vinegar thinned it. As the blood thickens
it cannot pass as easily and quickly through the
blood vessels and capillaries. This poor blood flow
would reduce cellular health by limiting nutrients
to the cells as well as waste elimination from the
cells. To prevent cell damage the body naturally
increases blood pressure but this puts more stress
on the blood vessels, organs and heart. Having ACV
and H with meals will help prevent protein raising
the blood pressure. It also contributes to a feeling
of greater well-being because the thinner blood
circulates quickly and more easily through the
blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis found regular consumption
of CV and H to be an excellent health tonic with
numerous health attributes. Also when used at
the onset of complaints such as the common cold,
sinusitis, asthmatic attacks, hay fever and childhood
diseases such as chicken pox and measles, was
accompanied by an improvement in the condition
with symptoms either disappearing or the
conditions were extremely mild and soon over.
More recent research on ACV has shown it to be
highly effective at controlling blood sugar levels.
Elevated blood sugar is associated not only with
diabetes, but with numerous health problems
from premature aging to multiple chronic
diseases. In a study published in Diabetes Care
Journal, ACV improved insulin sensitivity during
high-carb meals by 19-34% and significantly
lowered blood glucose and insulin responses.
Another Japanese study found ACV can help you
feel fuller, eat less and lose weight. Participants
in the 12 week study were found to have reduced
waist circumference and lower triglyceride levels
therefore reducing their cardiovascular risk levels.
Another observational study conducted by Harvard
showed that women who ate salad dressings with
ACV had a reduced risk of heart disease.
ACV is highly nutritious as it contains all the
goodness of the apple in a form that is readily
accepted by the body. Scientists have found over
90 different substances in ACV, among them 20
important trace elements, minerals and essential
enzymes. A scientific study at the Shizuka
University in Japan has proven ACV to have potent
antioxidant benefits (It can destroy free radicals,
which are a major factor in ageing.) and also the
ACV can break down cholesterol formations in the
blood vessels.
Good health starts with good digestion and
assimilation of nutrients. ACV taken before food
will stimulate and promote healthy digestion and
assimilation of vital nutrients for good health. A
well-functioning digestive system helps prevent
disease by neutralising any toxic substances that
enter the body.
It is important to note not all ACV is produced
in the traditional way and results are likely to prove
disappointing with these other vinegars.
Marshall’s Premium ACV and ACV with
20% Manuka Honey is produced in
Canterbury from Organic whole
apples in the traditional way. It is
double strength so you can use
less.
ONLY GO OMEGA-PC retains the natural Phospholipids that have been shown to be so beneficial for Good
Health BUT are lost in other brands of fish oil due to the less natural manufacturing processes used!
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL!
Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally
contain Omega-3 in a triglyceride & phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process. GO OMEGA-PC is produced using a new more natural cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. Studies show GO OMEGA-PC offers superior absorption with
increased omega-3 fatty acids in organs giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC OFFERS:
• Superior absorption of vital Omega-3, as
shown in research
• Advanced new cold extraction better
preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish
• Naturally contains phospholipids to
support cellular health
• Contains vitamin D3 to support immune,
bone & cardiovascular health
• Supports cardiovascular health - Countries with
a higher Omega-3 intake have much lower rates
of heart disease
• Supports blood circulation, healthy cholesterol &
Student leaders
work together
for change
Cashmere Head Boy Okirana
Tilaia addresses the vigil in
Hagley Park.
I would like to acknowledge the
loss and grief felt by our school
community as a result of the
tragic events of March 15.
I was deeply impressed by the
way in which our staff and
student community managed
themselves through this difficult
time.
I make particular mention of
our Head Boy, Okirana Tilaia, who
along with other student leaders,
organised an across-school vigil,
and an open mic evening, enabling
students to stand together and
share their empathy, their love
and their voice.
These events showed that our
young people can use social
media in really productive ways
to make a positive difference
in their own community and
globally.
Pasifika celebration
Cashmere High School students, above, put
on an amazing and polished performance
at Polyfest, held on May 4.
Fourteen Christchurch secondary
schools came together to perform and
celebrate all things Pasifika at the festival
at the Riding for the Disabled Pavilion at
On the last day of
Term 1, Cashmere
High School staff and
students farewelled
their Principal of
10 years, Mr Mark
Wilson.
Mr Wilson fostered
close connections
between the school
community, leading
the school through
many challenging
times and will be
sadly missed.
All the dedicated hours of rehearsals
and preparation undertaken by Cashmere
certainly paid off and the students were
wonderful ambassadors for their school
and community.
Students partake in Anzac Day services
Cashmere students Jess Tater, far
left, and Alice Tiso lay a wreath at the
Victoria Park Memorial for the 19th
Battalion and Armoured Regiment
Service, one of two local community
ANZAC Day Services of Remembrance
Cashmere supported again this year.
The other service was at the Halswell
War Memorial, Halswell Domain.
Anzac Day, April 25, is the national
day of remembrance for the fallen of
all wars, but specifically it commemorates
the day Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) landed
at Gallipoli in 1915.
HEALTH & AWARENESS
Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior
clients visit complaining of pain in one or
both hips.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a
back muscle could also be the cause, as
shown in the image.
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
Hip muscle that causes hip pain
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
and wellbeing.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the hip, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the hip in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client
Back hip muscle that causes hip pain
will know if it is going to work for them or
not, without financial commitment.
Bathroom
ventilation
The extraction of air from the bathroom opening a window can draw cold air into
should be a priority for all houses and the bathroom and blow the smelly, moisture
commercial buildings.
laden bathroom air into the house.
Bathrooms can generate a large quantity Modern houses are built to be very
of steam and odours. It is important this airtight and require mechanical ventilation
compromised air does not circulate around such as extraction fans or heat exchanger
the house.
systems. Although older houses can be
Bathroom odours can be unpleasant, draughty, the air often flows in the wrong
especially when near living, sleeping or direction. Therefore, they also usually
working areas.
require mechanical ventilation to keep the
The moisture generated by showers and air quality higher.
baths can be damaging to your home and The quality of the air we breathe affects our
furnishings and be a major contribution health and ability to perform. We breathe
to condensation. Damp houses are not a in and out approximately 20,000 litres of
especially for children or other vulnerable to ensure good air quality indoors through
people.
bathrooms, and look into air exchange for
your whole building. Smooth-Air offers
a wide range of ventilation equipment,
from air vents to ducting for fans, for both
the commercial and domestic markets.
They have an extensive range of fans and
ventilation components in-store but they
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Are you struggling with the heat of
Summer or wanting to get organised for
Winter? With the ever changing weather
patterns, heat pumps have the flexibility
of being able to heat and cool which is an
advantage no other appliance can offer. This
represents great value for your investment
as you can use it all year round. The team
at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you
cool this Summer either at home or work.
Enviro Master supplies, installs and services
all the leading brands including Panasonic,
Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means
our team can show you which system and
brand will best suit your needs.
With new regulations coming in for
Landlords to provide heating in rentals,
now is a great time to beat the 1st of
July deadline. Inadequate heating and
ventilation can lead to mould growth and
dampness in your property, leading to
costlier maintenance and an unhealthy
living environment. Providing a fixed
heater with a higher heat output and lower
running costs, like a heat pump, will enable
your tenants to heat the area effectively.
It will also discourage them from using
unflued gas heaters which can make a
house damp and mouldy.
It is important to remember, when
selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s
warranty does not cover the installation
and consumers could be responsible for
any repair or damage caused to the system
due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s
five-star installation guarantee ensures
correct installation, and a demonstration
so customers have an understanding on
how it will best meet their needs.
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
