“It was just part-time
[painting]. I’m not good
enough to have a whole
exhibition for myself,” Mr
Conolly said.
“Usually, I try to do
paintings of things that
have happened in my life
– nature, the bush, mountains.”
Once a year, the gallery’s
150 members put on a
members only show. And
being a community gallery,
schools are also invited to
display art every year.
“Last year we had Broadfield
School and Ladbrooks
School,” he said.
Some artworks displayed
at the gallery are sold at
the owner’s request, with a
commission going to help
run the place.
“Although we don’t pay
rent, we have phone bills,
Eftpos, power and Mike
Glover, [the gallery administrator],”
Mr Conolly said.
He said the district’s art
scene is surprisingly good.
There are a number of art
groups and galleries which
operate and contribute
positively to the district’s
art scene, Mr Conolly said.
Until two years ago,
Down by the Liffey Gallery
was run by volunteers but
the workload for day to day
operations required a paid
person, he said.
Mr Glover, an artist from
Springston, who previously
volunteered, stepped into
the role of the administrator.
“It’s a place for local people
to exhibit their work.
We’ve got quite a bit of first
time exhibitors – that gives
people a real boost to show
their work,” Mr Glover
said.
“Because it’s primarily
run by volunteers it’s
a great little community
enterprise.”
Mrs Conolly said the gallery’s
biggest asset was its
volunteers such as Adriana
de Groot.
“Without them it
couldn’t function,” she
said.
The couple never imagined
they would still be
helping run the gallery
eight years after it opened.
They only have one wish
for the gallery going into
the future.
“I just hope that it stays
as a little exhibition centre,”
Mr Conolly said.
