Queen’s Birthday honours for women

CELIA STEWART’S 40 years
of teaching music has been
recognised in the Queen’s
Birthday Honours List.
Mrs Stewart, of Lincoln, was
made a Member of the New
Zealand Order of Merit for her
services to music and education.
Also on
the list was
Kirwee
resident
Adrienne
Begg who
received
Adrienne Begg
a Queen’s
Service
Medal for
services to sport and community.
Said Mrs Stewart: “It’s lovely
to be acknowledged for the
work that’s been done. It’s a
group effort, I’ve got wonderful
colleagues.”
She has been the music
director of the Christchurch
School of Music since 2012.
Mrs Stewart also helped
maintain the Christchurch Big
Band Festival and is active in
fundraising. She continues to
serve on the Music Education
Canterbury executive and is
the co-music director of more
than 1200 students who compete
in the Strum, Strike and
Blow festival.
Mrs Stewart was chair of the
Music Education New Zealand
Aotearoa board from 2013 to
2015.
She has also often run
workshops and has supported
schools in their music programmes
on a voluntary basis.
“It’s just my belief in music’s
value on people’s lives. It’s so good
for so many aspects for children’s
development and we have a lot of
adults as well who come back to
it,” Mrs Stewart said.
Kirwee community stalwart
Mrs Begg has been involved
in a range of roles with sports
and community organisations
since the 1960s.
She was secretary of the
Courtenay Agricultural and
Pastoral Association from
1982 to 2014, served as president
in 2015 and remains a
committee member.
She was also a member of
the Kirwee Reserve Board
from 1962 to 2007 and has
been caretaker of the Kirwee
Community Hall since 1960
and secretary since 2001.
Mrs Begg was involved in
the raising of $400,000 to
upgrade the hall.
She has also been secretary
and treasurer of St George’s
Anglican Church in Kirwee
since 2009 and is vestry representative
to Malvern Anglican
Parish.

Lincoln’s Celia
Stewart was made
a Member of the
New Zealand
Order of Merit
for her services
to music and
education.
From 1964 to 1998, she was
secretary and treasurer of
the Kirwee Hockey Club and
served as president of Malvern
Hockey. She coached primary
and senior teams, was a selector
for Malvern Hockey, and a
New Zealand B Grade umpire
for national tournaments.
Mrs Begg has also held a
range of roles with the Kirwee
Tennis Club since the 1960s, including
club captain, coach, and
representative player. She was a
foundation member of Malvern
Squash in 1974 and was president
from 1985 to 1986.
Mrs Begg organised midweek
ladies squash and served
on the Canterbury Squash
committee.
