Big honour for sports broadcaster
Speed
limits in
Sumner
under
scrutiny
• By Louis Day
HEATHCOTE’S Grant Windsor
has been recognised in the
Queen’s Birthday Honours for
his contribution to sport and
broadcasting.
Mr Windsor was made a
Member of the New Zealand
Order of Merit.
In 1978, he was a part-time
sports reporter at Radio New
Zealand, and he used those skills
in a wide range of voluntary
community broadcasting roles.

SUMNER SPEED limits could be
set for a complete overhaul.
The city council is proposing
various changes to the speed
limits across Sumner.
Public consultation for the plan
will open on June 17.
The plan proposes the speed
limit be reduced in the wider
Sumner residential area from
50km/h to 40km/h as well
as a drop to 30km/h at the
entrance to Sumner, through
the township and along the
Esplanade.
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton saw the change as
necessary.
“I know that many people have
concerns about the large trucks
going back through the town on
their way to Lyttelton so I think it
will be well supported. There have
also been some issues with boy
racers in the area,” she said.

THAT’S A well deserved accolade for Grant
Windsor on page 1 today.
The Heathcote resident has been around
the sporting scene for decades, particularly
as a reporter and broadcaster on radio.
I remember as a young sports reporter
(print) bumping into Grant around the traps and he would
always have a big smile and laugh. And he was a knowledgeable
bloke too, of course.
He now volunteers at Radio Lollipop, a station for children in
hospital, and has also worked with disabled children and at rest
homes.
So well done Grant for being made a Member of the New
Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for
your contribution to sport and broadcasting.
An all round top bloke, you might say.

Funding boost for life savers
Taylors Mistake
to get five
new rescue
surf skis
TAYLORS MISTAKE Surf
Life Saving Club will be able
to buy five new rescue surf skis
following a grant from the New
Zealand Community Trust.
Club administrator Adrian
Mouldey said the club was
overwhelmed by the $15,936
grant.
“It is a great confidence
booster. It signals to us that
organisations such as NZCT
believe in the benefits surf
lifesaving clubs like ours provide
to the community in keeping
the beach safe over summer,” he
said.
Taylors Mistake and the
nearby bays are popular in the
warmer months. On a hot day,
over 2000 people can be at the
beach at Taylors Mistake with
up to 20 lifeguards from the club
being present.
A normal patrol would see 10
to 12 lifeguards present.
In the past year, the club
has had 95 active lifeguards
volunteering over 1800 hours. In
this time, 12 rescues have been
made and 15 first aid treatments
given.

this is usually five to six years.”

A PLAN TO cover every aspect of
the city’s water over the next 100
years is in the pipeline.
An integrated strategy to
manage the water supply, as well
as wastewater, stormwater, surface
water, groundwater and flood
management for the next century
is being developed by the city
council.
Water accounts for 25 per cent
of the city council’s projected
spend over the next 10 years with
$10 billion budgeted for it in the
Long Term Plan.
“The strategy is a high-level,
overarching strategy, developed
to consider water resources
and water services, values and
demands, and set a framework
to help the council to manage
them in an integrated way for at
least the next 100 years,” said city
council water supply programme
manager Helen Beaumont.
The point of the plan is to
address 11 “key strategic
issues” relating to water:
•Different perceptions of the
value of the water.
•Poor state of some
waterways.
•Vulnerability of
Christchurch’s groundwater
source to contamination.
DO IT ONCE - DO IT RIGHT
•Retaining Walls
•Drain-laying
•Driveways
•Trenching
•Wastewater overflows and
effects on surface water.
•Treated wastewater
discharges into Akaroa
Harbour.
•Stormwater discharges and
the effects on surface water.
•Flooding and flood
management.
•Responding/
adapting to the
anticipated effects of
sea level rise on water
resources and related
infrastructure.
•Long-term
availability of water for
water supply.
•Long-term
sustainable
wastewater treatment
and disposal.
•Infrastructure efficiency and
resilience.
The plan will include short,
medium and long-term goals,
such as achieving a high standard
of surface and groundwater
quality, increasing awareness
within the community and
adapting to climate change.
“The review of the strategies
began back in 2015 and external
costs to date total $302,350,

development of a working draft
strategy, and external stakeholder

reviews,” Ms Beaumont said.
Staff costs are in addition and
come out of existing budgets for
policy development.
Aotearoa Water Action Group
spokesman Peter Richardson said
it was a great move by the city
council.
“I think it sounds
absolutely fantastic. Our
councillors have shown
such leadership in the
water space,” he said.
City councillor Yani
Johanson said it was an
important process for
the whole community to
engage in.
“Water is such a
fundamental thing for our
community and particularly with
all that we’ve been through.”
However, he is worried that the
process is being rushed.
“I think this is really an
important document for us as a
city. It’s really important
we spend as much time as
required to really embrace the
ideas from across our city to make
sure we get something people buy
into.”
Public consultation on the
strategy is expected to take
place next month after the draft
is approved by a city council
working group.
Our success is built on obtaining respect
and repeat business for our honesty,
skills and innovation.

Readers respond to last
week’s Bay Harbour News’
article about a liquor store
planned for Redcliffs
Donald and Jan Simpson –
We wish to express very strong
opposition to the proposed liquor
outlet on Main Rd, Redcliffs
Village.
We do not need any more
liquor outlets in our area, bearing
in mind there are already more
than enough between Ferrymead
and Sumner and we have a New
World supermarket offering good
quality wines and beers already.
There is already an unwanted
and unpleasant problem in nearby
Beachville Reserve with drinking
and disorderly behaviour. We do
not need tobacco items or RTDs
sold there either.
Already there are too many,
with too easy access and the
granting of far too many new
licences. This is helping to
increase the appalling statistics
we have in New Zealand with too
much alcohol being consumed,
and the related problems of
alcoholism, family violence,
youth drinking, drink driving
and health-related illnesses.
The financial cost of the
problems relating to the drinking
and supply of alcohol and
cigarettes and the human cost is
eye-watering and we are at a loss
to understand why the granting
of yet another, and unwanted
licence in our area, is even being
considered.
Paddy Brocherie – Let’s
stop this now. We do not want
this in our Redcliffs Village.
Thank you for the opportunity
to have my say on the proposed
wine store. I say “no”.
Anna Majendie – Not sure
why Dr Fox mentioned the terror
attacks . . . had nothing to do
with alcohol. As far as I’m aware,
the whole of Christchurch was
affected.
Robyn Pearson – Living
within the required 1km
radius of this proposed liquor
application I put in a written
submission as required back
in January then attended the
hearing.
I felt obliged to do this as Jo
Bloggs average Redcliffs resident
representing the many in my
street who literally couldn’t go
through the requirements to
make opposing submissions.
However, even in my street,
and I’ve spoken to most, no
one had any enthusiasm for this
application – sensing a liquor
store could change what we
have – many of whom had made
a deliberate choice to live on the
flat, close to amenities to enjoy
the peace, quiet and safety that
Redcliffs offers.
It is a family and elderlyfriendly,
safe, quaint little
village with all essential
amenities established, including
a fully stocked New World
supermarket with well stocked
and monitored wine and beer
products.
Those who did manage to
negotiate the hoops and hurdles
of the process itself and attended
the two-da hearing found it
heavily weighted against the
community for a number of
reasons but mainly because
the agencies – police, medical
officer of health and city
council licensing inspector
‘have no issue’ with this planned
liquor outlet.
Therefore, the whole procedure
is expensive in time and
resources. Basically, it’s a lot of
rubber-stamping although the
tribunal is yet to make its final
decision.
This is astonishing given
alcohol-related harm is not only
acknowledged by the Liquor
Licensing Act 2012, but plenty
of research shows when a liquor
outlet opens, crime increases and
violent crime is up to 50 per cent.
It states harm from sale,
purchase and consumption must
be minimised.
Also good order and amenity
maintained. The greater
the availability and visibility -
the greater the alcohol-related
harm.

Those who live or work in Sumner are warmly

The Government has just
rolled out a well-being
budget. Alcohol
dependency and related
harm, depression and
other forms of mental
illness need to be
addressed on all levels.
Fine wine connoisseurs
describe fine wine as
superior, a standard of
excellence, collectable
outstanding, exceptional,
aged, rare and, of course
price is the defining factor.
The plan submitted for
this application shows
very similar products to
the usual liquor outlet
with a ‘more acceptable in
Redcliffs’ name.
We have a national
goal to be smoke-free by
2025. Mr Singh ‘forgot’ to
include cigarettes in his
application but intends
to sell tobacco products.
There are already three
suppliers within 150m.
Redcliffs Village does not
need yet another cigarette
supplier.
The Coastal Pathway,
designed for locals,
visitors and tourists alike
to exercise and enjoy our
beautiful but already
fragile coastline, is now
under construction.
Redcliffs Village is the
only group of shops the
pathway passes through.
This proposed site is the
only store on the Coastal
Pathway. The city council’s
pathway plans illustrate
this corner as a cafe.
Or else put in a bike shop
catering for bikes, scooters
trikes and e-bikes.
We are a healthy fitnessconscious
community
and passionately love our
tranquil and beautiful
environments, such as
Beachville Reserve (70m
away from the proposed
site).
Trends show local
parks and reserves
become youth drinking
lounges with increased
noise, litter, petty crime
and vandalism.
A liquor outlet store just
does not suit the village or
its environment – it has
the ability to change its
character.
There are schools,
reserves, parks and three
red zones all within a
1km radius – all attractive
for unsupervised night
drinkers.
There are 39 licenced
liquor outlets between
the CBD and Sumner.
Redcliffs residents are, in
general, a highly mobile
demographic, but there are
also many elderly people
living alone and vulnerable
youth. The proposed
site also has dozens of
residential homes close by.
This is a proposal to
sell addictive products
for private profit at the cost
of the community.

LAURA’S recovery is going
well, however, now she has
a nasty cold so family-funtime
continues, with added
sniffling and groaning.
Before the dreaded
lurgy took hold here Laura
had some time out with
a friend and fellow mum
while I took Vittoria to the
movies. Alone.
We have taken her to the
movies before, but when
she was a proper wee baby.
With her being a full-on
toddler, I was worried
about how it would go.
The session I picked had
a lot going in my favour. It
was a special screening for
parents with small kids and
we were watching Pokemon
Detective Pikachu.
Bright colours, fun characters.
Attention-grabbing,
with a healthy amount of
adult humour and nostalgic
value for a former
Pokemon Red aficionado.
In theory, good for both
of us.
We managed to get there
the perfect amount of late
to watch only the better
trailers.
The start time also
lined up with Vittoria’s
lunchtime, which was
great as she is food obsessed.
It will give you angelic
behaviour and blissful
silence for as long as the
food lasts.
Vittoria happily sat, had
her lunch and was watching
so cheerfully that I
started mentally planning
regular daddy/daughter
movie dates.
That lasted until the dialogue
turned to some fairly
key story points. At that
moment Vittoria got up,
jumped off her back row
seat and climbed through
the seat in front.
Now I’m trying to give
Vittoria as much freedom
to explore as possible but
I’m lucky the theatre was
pretty empty as she just
booked it down the line of
seats, ran down the stairs
and explored.
With offers of popcorn
and other snacks, I
managed to limit her laps
around the theatre to the
manageable and enjoy the
whole film.
It wasn’t until the
climactic final battle scene
that she turned it up to “oh
no”.
She went down the stairs,
smiled at a family to gain
their trust then snuck
down the row behind their
seats and pinched their entire
popcorn box through
the seat.
I retrieved it and gave it
back to the family – who

were very understanding,
they had children too and
I imagine most parents
have been through snackthievery.
All in all, an excellent
outing. Ten out of ten,
would do again.

social media, check out
the Instagram page I just

BRAVO: The Sumner Theatre Group following last year’s sell-out production.
Musicians wanted to

THE SUMNER Theatre
Group is on the hunt for
a band to accompany it in

The theatre group produces
a yearly show to help
local community groups

“We’re a fun lot, and are
in need of a band to work
with us this year,” said
secretary Jesse Rogers.
“Our show always has
a range of cover songs to
perform which are sung by
the cast, but after the show,
the floor is yours and year
after year the audience get
their dancing shoes on to
join in.”
“Ideally we’d like an
established band that is
willing to work with us to
adapt songs to fit the show.
Keyboard, guitar, bass and
drums and whatever else
you like.”
Rehearsals will begin in
mid-June and happen every
Monday night.
Shows will begin in
August and be held every

Personnel changes at Sumner
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER ARE set to get a
welcome boost following their
3-29 loss to New Brighton in the
battle of the beaches on Saturday.
With star centre Alistair
Crossdale – who missed the
match against New Brighton due
to a groin injury – returning to
the United Kingdom this week,
Sumner are
preparing
to welcome
fellow
Englishman
James Elliot
for the
remainder of
the season.
Elliot, a
Martin
Dodgson
half back,
was part of
the Newcastle
Falcons junior
academy before playing for Leeds
Beckett University.
In 2017, he linked back up
with the Falcons and was part
of their squad last year before
missing out on a new contract
with the club, which has created
an opportunity for him to ply his
trade in Sumner.
A familiar face will also return
this week with Wesley Mauafu
coming back after study and
work commitments in Auckland.
Mauafu played a key role in
Sumner’s No 12 jersey before he
moved north.
Sumner coach Martin
Dodgson is looking forward
CHANGE: James Elliot (left) will arrive in Sumner this week after two seasons at the Newcastle
Falcons academy in England, while Wesley Mauafu is set to turn out for Sumner after returning
from Auckland.
to having Mauafu back at his
disposal. However, it will be
bittersweet with Crossdale
departing as Dodgson believes
the pair could have been a killer
combination in the midfield.
“If you have (Mauafu) at 12
and Ali [Crossdale] at 13 . . .
far out, that’s an NPC quality
midfield right there,” said
Dodgson.
Following the loss to New
Brighton, Sumner are 10th in the
premier metro competition with
no chance of qualifying for the
top six.
On Saturday, they will go up
against High School Old Boys,
which will be Sumner’s final
game in the first phase of the
competition before they turn
their attention to restarting in
the bottom six the following
weekend.
The loss to New Brighton
also saw Sumner surrender the
Falton Shield, which is played
for between the two rival seaside
clubs.
The match was played in heavy
rain and wind at St Leonards
Square, meaning metres were
hard to gain with the ball in
hand.
After trailing 3-10 at halftime,
Sumner conceded an intercept
try and two more tries from
rolling mauls.
“The lineout throw was a
lottery, rucks were a lottery, ball
carrying was a lottery, kicking
was a lottery, just because of the
wind, the rain and the field,” said
Dodgson. “It was always going to
come down to things you could
control like discipline and our
discipline really let us down. We
gave away some soft penalties
for offside and with the wind
they were reeling off 40m or 50m
kicks for touch.”
•Sumner’s match against
HSOB kicks off at 2.45pm on
Saturday at St Leonards Square.
SPORT
Win would help
Bays secure
spot in the SFL
FERRYMEAD BAYS’ hopes of
securing a spot in the Southern
Football League will get a
massive boost if they can defeat
Nomads United on Saturday.
Bays are currently sixth in the
Mainland Premier League – one
point behind Nomads. The top
five teams in the MPL will qualify
for the SFL. With just two
rounds remaining in the MPL,
Bays will need at least one win
to have a chance of securing a
SFL spot. They play defending
MPL champions and current
leaders Cashmere Technical in
their final match.
Bays had a busy Queen’s
Birthday weekend. On Saturday,
they drew 0-0 with Coastal
Spirit at English Park in the
MPL. Bays’ best chance came
from a Nathan Townsend free
kick, which just sailed over the
crossbar.
On Monday, Bays advanced to
the third round of the Chatham
Cup by defeating FC Twenty
11 4-0 at Avonhead Park.
Townsend netted a hat-trick,
while stalwart defender Chris
Murphy also found the back of
the net. Bays will find out their
opposition for the opposition
for the next round when the
draw is made this afternoon.

GREAT READS INSTORE NOW
A Biker’s Life
Misadventure on (and off) two wheels
By Henry Cole
A BIKER’S LIFE is the dramatic, humorous and candid memoir of
one of the most recognisable names in motorcycling.
Henry Cole’s passion for motorbikes began when, at the age of
eight, he was first introduced to a ‘man cave’. His great-uncle
Redbeard’s corrugated iron shed was ‘stuffed to the gills with old
motorbikes’ which Henry helped rebuild and ride. Since then,
Henry’s life can be charted through the bikes and journeys he has
been on - from a stifling public-school education, via many years
battling addiction, to the big-sky iconic routes Henry has ridden
for over twenty series as presenter of numerous TV shows.
This book reminds millions of motorcyclists why their bike gives them the freedom to be
exactly who they want to be: to say ‘I’m doing my thing.’ When you ride a motorbike you
become part of a worldwide community of kindred spirits - those of us who will not be
pacified by driving a car, but instead live for adventure and the sheer thrill of the throttle.

materials, structures, spaces and furnishings. Included in the
mix are industrial and farm buildings that have been converted
for living and furnished appropriately with vintage and repurposed industrial fittings.
The book features 20 homes located throughout the country that feature a variety of clever
solutions and design styles. There is everything from repurposed container homes to army
barracks, farm utility buildings, churches and urban spaces finished with upcycled and
repurposed furnishings.
Tim Cook
The Genius Leading Apple into a New era of
Success
By Leander Kahney
In 2011, Tim Cook took on an impossible task - following in the
footsteps of one of history’s greatest business visionaries, Steve
Jobs. Facing worldwide scrutiny, Cook (who was often described
as shy, unassuming and unimaginative) defied all expectations.
Under Cook’s leadership Apple has soared: its stock has nearly
tripled to become the world’s first trillion-dollar company. From
the massive growth of the iPhone to new victories like the Apple
Watch, Cook is leading Apple to a new era of success.
But he’s also spearheaded a cultural revolution within the company. Since becoming CEO,
Cook has introduced a new style of management that emphasizes kindness, collaboration
and honesty, and has quietly pushed Apple to support sexual and racial equal rights and
invest heavily in renewable energy.
The Billion Dollar Bonfire
How Allan Hubbard and the Government
destroyed South Canterbury Finance
By Chris Lee
The collapse of South Canterbury Finance (SCF) is one of the
biggest New Zealand stories of the last decade.
The sweep of events, from Timaru to the Beehive, include some
of the most revealing moments on issues critical to this country
- everything from poor governance and systemic issues in the
finance sector, through to the structural risks this exposed and
the costs it ultimately presented to all New Zealanders. There has
not yet been a book that has attempted to tell this story, certainly
not one from an `insider’ perspective. The Billion Dollar Bonfire by Chris Lee will be the first
book to do both these things. Chris tells this fascinating story as both a long-standing New
Zealand financial advisor and a protagonist in the narrative. As he writes in the opening
chapter, he knew Alan Hubbard personally and, from the late 1990s, had clients invest with
SCF. His main motivation for writing the book, made explicit throughout, is his overriding
concern that this could all happen again without significant changes to our law and the
culture of the capital markets industry.

GT-Line gives the Kia brand extra bite
Motoring
Ross Kiddie
KIA MOTORS New Zealand is
doing everything it can to raise
the profile of its ever-increasing
line-up.
Amidst its range of sport utility
vehicles and passenger cars is new
branding, the GT-Line is stretching
further into the company’s mix.
GT-Line can be found in new
Cerato and Sportage, and those
variants generally have more
features and a slant towards
higher performance – engine and
suspension.
One other model stands out
with its GT-Line badge, and that
is the Rio, a smallish hatchback
which has already made a name
for itself in the market for its
practicality and economy.
The Rio lands here in entry-level
form at $23,490 which makes it an
affordable package and there are
higher grade options depending
on how you would like it specced.
Topping the range is a $28,990
GT-Line which has an engine
totally devoid from that of its stablemates.
Instead of the tried and
tested 1.4-litre naturally-aspirated
four-cylinder unit, the GT-Line
gets a turbocharged three-potter
which is squarely aimed at Suzuki’s
$28,500 Swift Sport, in terms of its
position in the market.
The 1-litre engine is considerably
more powerful than the base
model unit, yet it is also more
economical and, being lightweight
in design, it promotes an
agile handling feel.
Power is rated at a healthy
88kW and 171Nm, the turbo
boost ushering in a long torque
curve – 1500rpm to 4000rpm.
Maximum power arrives at
6000rpm, but bottom end
strength is strong enough to meet
the red-line without becoming
breathless.
For the three-cylinder novice
you will firstly notice the harmonics
associated with the design, it
appears lumpy and doesn’t always
seem balanced, that’s not really
the case it just seems that way.
However, it does have a characteristic
tone and that is manifested
through the cabin, that’s not a bad
thing, I like the sound and the
feeling it generates, it adds to the
sporty sensation Kia is trying to
achieve with the GT-Line.
Drive is channelled through a
seven-speed, dual clutch transmission,
therein lies another
notable sensation, there isn’t total
harmony between the engine and
gearbox, there are times when the
two don’t feel thoroughly connected,
notably when entering or
leaving reverse.
That aside, in all other circumstances
it works sweetly, shifts are
quick and combine to promote
the feel you would expect from a
car wearing a GT badge.
Performance is quite lively given
the engine has a displacement
of just 998cc. It will launch the
Rio to 100km/h from a standstill
in around 10sec and will happily
shift down for a highway overtake
in 6.6sec (80km/h to 120km/h).
The Rio in this form hasn’t lost
sight of its purpose, it is still the
economical fuel miser of its counterparts
- the LX, EX and Limited.
Kia NZ gives the turbo Rio
a 5.4-litre per 100km (52mpg)
combined cycle average.
Unfortunately, my time on the
highway was thwarted by a puncture
and I didn’t do anywhere
near the amount of kilometres I
would have preferred. However,
I can report that the Rio GT-Line
has spirited behaviour and tidy

handling manners.
Kia has uprated the suspension
quite noticeably, the GT-Line sits
very firm on the road and doesn’t
absorb much in the way of road
ripples. A bit of that has to do
with the low profile of the tyres
(205/45 x 17in) and the restricting
nature of the tube beam rear
axle that prohibits rear wheel
freedom. However, the handling
benefits are at the forefront, the
Rio GT-Line has sporty dynamics,
it steers sweetly into a corner
and powers out with composure.
Directional accuracy is sharp and
body balance over the suspension
is well contained thanks to the
firming.
As sporty as the Rio GT-line
suggests, it is still the practical
family car, the five-door layout is
appealing and the levels of comfort
aren’t overly compromised,
bearing in mind that at just over
4m, the Rio as a range isn’t big on
space,however, it does make good
use of its compact proportions and
will satisfy with its level of comfort.
Kia in New Zealand knows it
has to compete hard, in all of its
markets there are other brands
with tempting product.
I’m not sure the Rio GT-Line
has the spark to pip the Swift
Sport, but I do know is that Kia
NZ will be aggressive with its
marketing, and it will certainly
sell to those who want something
just a little different in their performance
car purchase.

REAL ESTATE
Sunrise to sunset
7A Ranui Crescent, Diamond Harbour
Price: $418,000
2/3 bedrooms | 1 bathroom | Open plan living/dining/kitchen | Listing Number: 9394
Sitting as centre stage to the water, this is
a quirky, retro and totally unique property.
Sitting as centre stage to the water as you can
get, the views here out to the hills and the
head of the harbour are unbeatable.
In a well-established, private garden which
adjoins the reserve, this is a property which
begs closer inspection. It’s functional in
layout, and there is certainly opportunity
here to add value and create something quite
remarkable with the interior, which oozes
potential.
Two decent sized bedrooms and a
bathroom downstairs, and on the middle
level is open-plan living/dining and kitchen
with more phenomenal views. Ascend the
spiral staircase to the upper level where
you will find more space for potentially the
master bedroom or additional living.
The house itself is tidy but requires some
structural work to continue its longevity -
this is a project best suited to someone with
construction skills or experience. There is an
engineer’s report available.

property in a stunning harbour position,

WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”

THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the

THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave

Body corporate chairman Mike

into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”

It was the firs time Mr Garth

“We produced some top quality

The preparation for this year’s
World Butchers’ Cha lenge was
intense as the team members
met in Auckland every two
months for lengthy w ekend
practices.
Mr Garth, who has b en a
butcher for 14 years, said the
competition brought back his

“Doing a l thi stuff and

ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes to own a
butcher shop of his own someday

“In two years’ time, we’ l be

AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.

WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”

THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stand down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the

• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments are expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffered damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”

World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
in World War 1 uniforms while
their horses Tommy and Kruze
wore 1 0-year-old sa dles donated
to the trust.
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
te l” to make them aware of what
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
wear in the war.

AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
since the age of 19.

Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
