$2.6m upgrade for
council building
VISITORS TO the district
council headquarters in
Rolleston will notice some
changes over the coming
months.
Construction work
will begin on Monday
to build a new customer
services space and an office
extension.
The
project,
signalled in
the district
council’s
2018-2028
Stephen
Long-Term
Plan, will
include
Hill
a large new customer
services area right at the
front entrance. It has a
budget of $2.67 million.
The building will remain
open for business as usual
through this time.
This will bring together
the existing customer
services teams, which
were previously located
in different areas in the
building.
The building project
reflects the growth of
the district and the
increase in council staff
numbers required to
meet the changing needs
of its residents, said
district council business
relationship manager
Stephen Hill.

kind of thing that

All district council
services will be operating
as usual, but the main
entrance doors will be
out of action because of
building work, so people
will enter the building
through the western staff
entrance. Car parking will
be available in this area.
“We hope customers
will bear with us while we
make these improvements.
Many services, such as
rates, dog registration and
consent applications, can
also be completed through
subject to vandalism.
“A while ago [during
summer], they destroyed
the toilet blocks, smashed
all the toilets,” he said.
Darfield Senior
Constable Andrew Grant
said police had increased
patrols earlier in the year
following the vandalism
incidents.
“The [reserve] committee
were given advice and
we’re doing patrolling late
the council’s website
selwyn.govt.nz,” Mr Hill
said.
The new customer
services area will be built
in the space currently
occupied by Mayor Sam
Broughton, chief executive
David Ward and their
support staff, who will
relocate to a new extension
on the Rolleston Drive side
of the building.
Seismic strengthening
of the council chamber is
also being done to meet the
requirements to operate as
an emergency operations
centre.
The district council is
aiming to have the new
customer services space
open by early November
with the entire project
planned to take about eight
months.
The public will be kept
updated via the council’s
website and Facebook page.
