Besides the many gross
motor benefits, such as
improved co-ordination,
strength and endurance,
obstacle courses offer
fine motor benefits too!
Crawford Village Grade
00s and 0s had to
Crawford Village
sequentially memorise
the various obstacles and the order in which they
were to be carried out. Within the course, pupils
were exposed to multiple sensory inputs, as they
rocked over balancing beams, bounced and hopped
as well as placed their hands and feet on rubber
shapes for tactile input.
Physical activity is essential for
young children. It helps their
social, emotional and physical
well-being. Pupils learn to work
as a team and it encourages
them to develop empathy for
others. In our modern society,
we need to teach our pupils the
importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Selina Yang, in Grade 0 at
Crawford Pre-Primary Pretoria,
took part in the South African
Junior Chess Championships.
There were 2 300 players
attending from all over South
Africa. Selina achieved 3rd
place in the U8 girls’ group.
She was recognised on stage
at the opening ceremony as the
youngest player participating at
the tournament.
Cycle Track is included and
incorporated in our timetable
as part of the physical activity
programme. It’s also used to
enhance the pupils gross motor
skills while enjoying riding
the bikes. Pictured above:
Noah Mamatela, in Grade 0 at
Crawford Pre-Primary Pretoria,
is a truly talented swimmer who
was discovered at Tuks Aquatics
at the age of four. He was taken
into an open lane while his two
older sisters were training and
immediately asked to come
in for a trial when assistant
coaches saw that he was
able to swim 50m Backstroke.
Noah, now five years old, is the
youngest swimmer in both Tuks
Aquatics and the Preparatory
School’s Swimming Team.
Riding a bicycle is a complicated skill that requires
trunk stability and strength, balance, co-ordination,
motor planning and body or spatial awareness. The
Crawford Village pupils gain many benefits while
riding their bikes on the tracks, managing trunk
control, balance and cognitive development; and of
course, it’s a fun way to exercise too!
Crawford Pre-Primary Sandton
places high importance on the
developmental needs of children.
We understand that assistance is
needed to learn new skills and
gain strength gradually through
continued practise. That’s why
we’ve developed a specialised
movement programme which aims
to build children’s overall strength through fun exercises
carried out daily. This foundational strength will assist
future life skills as well as potential sporting careers.
At Crawford Pre-Primary Sandton we feel it’s important
to make time for children to experience different forms of
sport and exercise. Gymnastics lessons are thoroughly
enjoyed and the children excel in the different
challenges. They enjoy testing their bodies’ capabilities
and love to show their friends, family and teachers the
different skills they master by the end of the year.
