Write your Will!
The law will decide who will benefit
from your money, property and
possessions unless you write a will and
decide for yourself. You can legally write
your own will but get advice if you:
• co-habit with someone who is not
your husband, wife or civil partner
• have family members from another
marriage
• live outside the UK or have overseas property
• are leaving property or money to a dependent who cannot care for
themselves
Get your will formally witnessed and signed to make it legally
valid. Remember to state:
• who you want to benefit from your will
• who will take care of your children, if aged under 18
• what you would like to happen if the beneficiaries die before you
Appoint an executor to act on your behalf and to sort out your estate.
Store it at home, with your will writer, solicitor, bank, the London
Probate Service. Remember to tell people where it is!
A Turning Point
Being over 50 can be a turning point
- an opportunity to re-energise and
make use of your life experience.
Whatever the reason, redundancy
or children leaving home, begin by
reviewing what changes you want
and how they will impact financially
and practically. Consider work happiness, life balance and the salary
that different jobs offer. Local colleges offer courses to retrain including
apprenticeships for adults at Milton Keynes College. Google career
change or adult apprenticeship to find out more. Get your CV up-todate
and include the hidden skills you’ve gained from home, hobbies
and other interests. Ask your friends and contacts to help with useful
introductions.
Finally remember believe you can do this and you will succeed.
Are Shop
Loyalty Cards
Worth It?
You’ll probably have at least one
loyalty card in your wallet or purse
but most people have multiple
loyalty cards. Are they worth signing
up for and using them each time
you shop?
The ‘This Is Money’ website recently
carried out research into the best
and worst loyalty cards measured by
the points/value you get back per £1
of spend.
They found the winners were
• Tesco Clubcard – 3% back (in
points) on your spending and you
don’t have to just spend at Tescos.
• Boots Advantage Card – 4% back
but you can only spend at Boots.
The average were
• myWaitrose Card – Offer vouchers
and free coffee every time you go in,
spend and bring a reusable cup!
• Superdrug Health and Beauty Card
– Not as good as Boots but still OK.
• Iceland Bonus Card – More like a
saver card than points card with £1
added every £20 saved onto the card
which is a 5% return.
The worst ones were
• Marks and Spencer Sparks Card –
Collect points for offers, no actual
money back.
• Morrisons More Card – 0.5% back
on what you spend. £5 back on
£1,000 spent!
• Sainsbury’s Nectar Card – 0.5%
back.
