Sun, sand and smoking
SCHOOLCHILDREN
in Javea collected exactly
4,054 cigarette butts on the
resorts Arenal beach earlier
this week, highlighting the
ongoing issue of smokers
not properly disposing of
their fag ends. This rubbish
was catalogued by the
Oceanografic Foundation
and was collected by the 50
primary age school-kids in
just one hour. A spokesman
for the ecological group
said that the beach was
actually very clean and
litter free apart from the
vast amount of cigarettes
Getting ready for the fires
EARLIER this month
a number of people took
part in defence training
against forest fires on La
Granadella Urbanisation
as we start to enter the time
of year when the dangers
increase significantly.
The training was aimed
at protecting what is
known as the Urban Forest
by Simon Russell
which she described as
“outrageous”. In similar
clean-ops there is usually
around 300 butts collected,
by Simon Russell
Interface, built up areas
close to forestry, often but
not always urbanisations.
The town’s new Forest
Fire Protection system
was tested out and ablaze
simulated while water
from swimming pools and
hydrants were both used.
which often end up in the
sea if not properly disposed
of. Hopefully, the kids
will be more careful with
their own rubbish after the
foundation impressed the
Those involved included
the Local Police, Civil
Protection volunteers and
professional firefighters
who oversaw the operation.
The focus was on several
key areas including
maximising any nearby
water supplies, protecting
housing and determining
evacuation routes.
Musicians of the future
THERE are a series of
recitals by many of the
young students of Javea’s
Conservatori Professional
de Musica early next week,
all free to the general public.
At 5.30pm on Monday (17
June) there is a piano and
guitar ensemble performed
Tentative
recovery
W H I L E
unemployment in
the Marina Alta fell
in May, it was by
less than the same
period last year
indicating that the
economic recovery
is slowing down
in the area. May
is usually a month
when more people
find work as the
tourist season starts,
albeit seasonal.
There was a net drop
in unemployment
in the fiscal year
from May 2018 to
by Simon Russell
by pupils from years 3 and
4 and following that at 7pm
there is a recital by 4th
year students. On Tuesday
evening it is the turn of the
1st and 2nd year students
who at 5.30 will perform
May 2019 but less
than the year before.
There are still just
under 10,000 people
registered as looking
for work across the
Marina Alta, twice
what it was in 2006
at the peak of the
boom period. 2,978
people in Denia
are still on the dole
queue, 1,267 in
Javea and 1,149 in
Calpe. About 90%
of new contracts
were temporary, an
ongoing concern for
unions.
an ensemble with wind
and string accompanied by
a choir. It is the 4th years
again at 7pm who will be
doing a final recital. All
the performances are at the
Conservatori itself, located
on Calle Rafael Echague,
No 5.
Local expat on honours
GEORGINA
Harvey, president
by Simon Russell
of Javea’s Original and local cancer charity
Charity Shop and MABS. Outgoing
Library, has been ambassador Simon
named in this year’s Manley said he was
Queen’s Birthday “incredibly impressed”
Honours list. She has by Georgina’s work
been with the charity alongside the 80 or so
since 1995 which since volunteers at the shop
her time as president and library. She will
they have donated over be awarded the British
half a million euros to Empire Medal (BEM)
various good causes in recognition of her
including the Red Cross achievements.
Smoothing
the sands
THE annual work
to get Benitatchell’s
Cala del Moraig
ready for the
summer is due to
be completed this
week, in time for
the kid’s summer
holidays which start
next week for most
pupils. The sands are
easily damaged over
the winter, and gravel
is used to smooth
and flatten out the
area which has now
been completed.
Other tasks include
the installation
of walkways and
lighting as well
as the Red Cross
lifeguards booth on
the Blue Flag cove.
Housewives (and husbands) get together
THE Riurau d’Arnauda
was the wonderful setting
for the 350 members of
the Javea Amas de Casa,
or housewives association,
who got together for a
paella day last Thursday.
by Simon Russell
As well as the traditional
paella the party enjoyed
plenty of other great food
accompanied by music
and concluding with a
prize giving ceremony. The
group is not just a reason
for people to get together
but does a large amount
of charity and community
work - and househusbands
are also welcome of course.
