Kia ora and welcome,
Well here we are, past the shortest day and heading for summer… haha if only.
My opening note this month is thank all those members that have passed on their kind wishes
to me following my reappointment, (un-opposed) to the role of President of this club.
We have an extremely testing year ahead and after a re-charge of my own batteries I will be
up for the challenges that lie in waiting.
Our club’s AGM has been recently completed and I would like to extend a special thanks to the
72 odd members whom attended, listened and contributed to our annual warrant of fitness
check up.
Our general managers report was well presented and very informative, reviewing the last 12
months performance of the club followed by him sharing a view and vision on what and how
the next 12 months will look like. This report was very well received by all those in attendance
and provided clear insights as to the challenges that we have to face head on.
Personal presentations were made firstly to Grace Kelly for her contribution to the club. In the
first instance as being employed as our raffle convenor for 17 odd years, but equally as importantly
for her voluntary work at Wednesday lunches and also her contribution to the Tuesday
evening promotions. Thank you Grace for dedication and commitment to our club, and we
look forward to seeing you relaxing around the club in the near future .
Secondly, acknowledgment was given to our award winning gardener, Micheal Marquet who
is moving onto greener pastures (tending to the beautiful gardens at the local crematorium on
Linwood Ave). We have been treated to many stunningly bright and colourful displays over the
years, which have really put the Woolston Club on the map for gardening excellence.
We wish both Grace and Michael well in their future endeavours.
Following the AGM the annual club elections were held, with the only voting requirement being
for the 4 vacated board positions.
The Canterbury Billiards Inter-Club competition has just finished with the section
entering teams in both the 1st division played on the Wednesday nights & the 3rd
with an array of well
painted armies on show.
We settle into the winter
months now, looking ahead to
DonkeyCon in early August. As
the name suggests, that weekend
revolves around taking a
fairly light-hearted approach to
the games on show.
In the meantime, our regular
club nights and days will keep us
busy.
Zane.
WARGAMERS SECTION:
What a month of gaming!
June saw the wargaming section make the
news for all the right reasons, as our D-Day
75 th Anniversary event was a roaring success.
In Top West two massive, weekendlong
games detailing the Normandy landings
in June 1944 were played out next to displays
of WW2 uniforms, weapons and memorabilia.
One News came along to interview
the tireless Tony Ormandy, who along with
Andy Tucker has our thanks for organising
the whole thing from start to finish.
Meanwhile, downstairs in Kellaway we had
around 50 players involved in CavCon.

FISHING SECTION:
Queens Birthday weekend saw a hardy bunch of keen anglers head down to
Otematata to take part in a 4 way challenge against Papanui, Canty Anglers and
Ferrymead clubs. Suitably prepared for some seriously cold weather, we launched
the boats early Saturday morning with the air temp at -2C and the water temp
around 7*C ..
Catching fish was easier than trying to keep, and stay warm. But some of us
managed to get fish on board, so the day was deemed successful. Day 2 saw us
change lakes due to a power boat race and here, some did better than others...
Moreso that when you've been on the main body of water for about 60secs , you
cast your line and whack, there's a fish on, here's us all thinking what a great day this
could turn out to be... yep so much for that line of thinking!
The writer caught 2 but put 1 back, the boat skipper caught 1 all weekend, but had a
bit of fun travelling all over the lake. Never mind, on to the presentations that night
where Woolston scooped most of the main prizes. We may be small in numbers but
we are very effective at results time it seems. Neil won the main trophy, Karen won
the Ladies trophy and Arjay won the Juniors.. It’s a quiet time for us now as we
prepare ourselves for next season, boats in for servicing and new gear to be
purchased where necessary or in some cases.. "just because I might need it some
day". So winter well and stay warm and bug free.

FOOTBALL SECTION:
The Football section CTFC are just over half way through the season now. There has
been some wonderful success and some defeats players may rather forget throughout
our 13 Senior teams. Our Men's 1st team secured the MPL title, losing only one
game at the beginning of the 2 round, 8 team league. They now take to the roads
in the Southern League which brings together clubs from Nelson to Dunedin. The
first game against Otago Uni at the Caledonian in Dunedin saw a challenging game,
our boys coming away 3-0 up with 2 late goals. In the national knock out cup, the
Chatham Cup, we hosted Coastal Spirit and CHC United at Garrick Park. Both games
were hard fought to penalties. CHC United becoming victors of the round 3 match
so our Chatham Cup run came to an end.
Our Women's first team took on local rivals Coastal Spirit on Saturday 29th June in a
top of the table clash at Garrick Park, the football gods favoured on the Coastal side
and our girls are sitting in second place on the 5 team table with a game in hand
and 5 points behind.
Our reserve men sit in second place just one point behind league leaders Western,
they will be determined to play hard to win back top spot as the season plays
out. While our reserve women (CWCL) are also in second place. The top 3 share
points, but goal difference separates them, hopefully they can continue to play well
and see how the league finishes up.
We would like to congratulate our Canaries who gained a mid season promotion
from Div 5 to Div 4, they have yet to find some points in Div 4, 2 games in, but they
have been closely fought games. Also our 45+ Pele's Children won the league
there. Both our 45+ teams secured places in pool A for the Championship to end
the season. We wish them both well.
We look forward to seeing how the season pans out for all our teams, we have really
been enjoying our after-matches in the community room and really appreciate
being able to create a home environment with a few bits of memorablilia up on the
walls.
