The mother of three lives 

on a small lifestyle block 

and works with special 

needs children at Rolleston 

Christian School. 

But she’ll be dressing up to 

the nines in Auckland for the 

beauty pageant in September. 

It will be her first time 

competing in a pageant after 

passing up the opportunity 

years ago. 

“I got asked to do one when 

I was 20 but I didn’t have 

enough confidence in myself, 

I thought they were only 

looking for super models,”

THE OWNERS and staff of Isushi 

in Lincoln have been left reeling 

after fake money was used to scam 

them out of about $200. 

Shop manager Ben Yao said 

the incident occurred on Monday 

last week, when they were 

targeted by two people using fake 

notes. 

“A woman came in and paid 

with a $100 note, a few hours later 

a man came in and also paid with a 

$100 note,” he said. 

Due to the shop being busy at the 

time, staff members didn’t notice 

the notes were counterfeit and gave 

them change. 

Mr Yao said it wasn’t until the 

next day when he was on the way 

to the bank to deposit the money 

that he realised. 

“I was really sad, it’s devastating 

for us, $200 is a huge amount for a 

sushi shop to lose.” 

He is speaking out because he 

does not want it to happen to other 

businesses. 

“We want to spread the word 

and will be contacting nearby 

businesses to warn them. 

“We have CCTV footage of 

the man and woman and are 

considering sharing this publicly 

so people can keep an eye out.”

Amy Adams’ decision to retire from politics 

has opened the way for a new National 

hopeful in next year’s elections. 

District councillor Craig Watson (see page 5) has already put 

his hand up. The selection process starts next month. I would be 

surprised if he was the lone contender. 

The figures speak for themselves. 

In 2017, Adams polled 28,686 votes, well ahead of second 

placed Tony Condon (Labour), 9047. 

In 2014, she was just as dominant, taking almost 70 per cent 

of the vote, and well ahead of second placed Green hopeful Peter 

Hill.

ANGRY LINCOLN residents 

are fed-up with the ‘horrific’ 

Boundary Rd potholes and are 

calling for action. 

Beth McEachen said 

the holes are a complete 

hazard and unsafe for 

motorists. 

“The road is in such a 

state it poses more danger 

than the oncoming traffic,” 

she said. 

Mrs McEachen said 

she’s concerned that the 

district council isn’t looking 

into the issue. 

“It’s been left for years, is it 

going to take somebody being injured 

for them to do something?” 

She said widening the road 

would make a huge difference. 

Elyse Rennie said she suspects 

one of the potholes buckled a 

wheel on her car. 

“My husband and I both unknowingly 

drove our cars over 

the potholes on two different 

days. The car’s still driveable but 

it will need to be fixed,” she said. 

Mrs Rennie then went to the 

council to complain. 

“They attempted to fill in the

some rain it opened up again. 

She said it was absolutely 

dangerous and if somebody on a 

scooter or motor-cycle went over 

it, they would be thrown off the 

road.

potholes just aren’t good

described the holes on 

Boundary Rd between 

Shands Rd and Springs Rd as 

‘horrific’ and called for the district

District council transportation 

team leader Mark Chamberlain 

said Boundary Rd is 

programmed for a reseal this 

financial year. 

He said they’ve completed 38 

pothole repairs along the road so 

far this year and will continue to 

respond to complaints if they are 

notified.

MOTORIST KILLED IN CRASH 

A motorist was killed when a 

car and truck collided on State 

Highway 1 at Rolleston on 

Monday. A police spokeswoman 

said emergency services were 

called to the crash site between 

Tennyson St and Rolleston Drive 

at 1.40pm. Meanwhile, a driver 

was left with a broken hand 

after a crash at the intersection 

of Hodgens and Springs Rds 

around 4.25pm on Friday. Senior 

Constable Andrew Williamson 

said a car was waiting to turn 

right off Springs Rd when it was 

hit from behind.

Otago and Auckland University 

students visited year 10, 11 and 

12 classrooms at Lincoln High 

School on June 27 to talk about 

studying and having a career 

in medicine as part of a wider 

visit from the New Zealand Rural

It follows a spike in 

counterfeit money being used 

in Canterbury. About $20,000 

in fake notes have been used to 

scam retailers over the past few 

months in the region. 

The notes have mainly been 

used at fast food outlets, service 

stations and bars with pokie 

machines. 

Sergeant Phil Bayne said he 

has not been made aware of an 

issue with fake money being 

used in Selwyn. However, he said 

police are urging businesses to 

be vigilant as it is a problem in 

other parts of Canterbury. 

“The bigger notes are typically 

the problem, the $100 and such, 

it’s really important you have a 

good look before putting them 

away,” he said. 

Programme to rid reserve of pests 


A COMMUNITY-LED trapping 

programme is set to start at 

Yarrs Flat Wildlife Reserve in 

Springston. 

It’s being organised by the 

Waihora Ellesmere Trust with 

help from the Department of 

Conservation and is aimed at 

hedgehogs, stoats, ferrets and 

rats.

Councillor to stand down 

in bid for National Party nomination

CRAIG WATSON concedes he 

is putting all of his political eggs 

into one basket in his bid to win 

the National nomination for 

Selwyn. 

He won’t be seeking reelection 

onto district council in 

October’s local body elections, 

instead setting his sights on 

Parliament, with the retirement 

of Amy Adams. 

“I’m putting a lot on the line 

here. I’m going all in and no 

matter what happens now 2020 

is going to look a lot different for 

me,” said Mr Watson. 

He has been a Selwyn Central 

councillor for the past three 

years. 

Said Mr Watson: “I have never 

made a secret of my dream to 

one day represent our community 

in Parliament.” 

Amy Adams recently announced 

she’ll be stepping 

down at the 2020 election. 

Mrs Adams has been 

the MP for Selwyn since 

2008 and is currently both 

the finance spokesperson 

and the shadow Attorney- 

General. 

Before opposition she held 

several cabinet positions, including 

justice minister and social 

housing minister 

She said she felt she couldn’t 

give the job her all going forward 

and wanted more 

time with family. 

The National Party 

selection process for 

her replacement will 

begin next month when 

nominations open. 

A list of the nominees 

are then passed on to 

a pre-selection committee who 

whittle it down to a top five 

which is voted on by members of

In his time on the council, Mr 

Watson has been involved in 

many key projects for the community. 

This includes the Selwyn 

Aquatic Centre upgrade and the 

first ever Selwyn Motorfest. 

He is also the deputy chair of 

the audit and risk committee. 

He initially joined the National 

Party in Dunedin back 

in 2005 as an election secretary 

after studying radiation therapy 

at Otago University. 

In 2010 he ran for the Dunedin 

City Council, it was a last 

minute decision and he didn’t 

have long to campaign. 

He wasn’t elected and attributes 

that to the spontaneity of 

his candidacy. 

“I didn’t quite know what I 

was doing and I think that’s 

probably why I didn’t get the 

spot.” 

Although, he said it was this 

experience that really ignited his 

passion for politics. 

“I just think if you’re going 

to complain, you need to try to 

make a change and that’s what I 

wanted to do.” 

That passion then brought him 

to the Selwyn District Council 

six years later. 

Water project 

under way 

A LARGE basin near Hororata 

will be constructed to recharge 

groundwater into the Selwyn- 

Waihora zone. 

An off-take from the recently 

completed stage 2 of the Central 

Plains Water scheme will pour up 

to 3.5cumecs of Rakaia River water 

into the basin when groundwater 

levels are low. 

This water will percolate into 

the groundwater system beneath, 

recharging the aquifer and feeding 

springs that are the source of 

streams where mudfish live. 

Last week marked the beginning 

of the project after the 

district council, Environment 

Canterbury, Central Plains Water 

and the Department of Conservation 

joined Te Taumutu in blessing 

the land. 

It will use water from the district 

council and Central Plains 

Water consents. 

The $2.8 million project is 

funded by the Government’s 

Freshwater Improvement Fund 

and ECan. When completed, the 

system will only operate when the 

nearby Selwyn River/Waikirikiri 

is not flowing naturally and 

will not mix at the surface with 

natural river water.

Mrs Mundt only made

Mrs Universe New Zealand 

a few weeks ago after she 

recommended a friend enter. 

“When I started to see what 

they were looking for, it felt much 

more me. It’s very family-focused 

and charity-driven,” she said. 

The purpose of the pageant 

is to unite women and work to 

prevent domestic violence, as 

well as change society’s beauty 

standards. 

It also opens pageantry up to 

married women, who are unable 

to compete for a ‘miss’ title. 

Mrs Mundt said she is enjoying 

the experience so far and is very 

excited. 

“It’s very empowering to do 

something outside of yourself 

and to help break out of your 

comfort zone.” 

She hopes by competing 

she can send a message to 

all mothers that they can do 

anything. 

“Lives of mothers aren’t over 

when they have children and 

I want to live mine with no 

regrets.” 

Mrs Mundt has the support of 

her whole family. She said her 

husband Neil and their three 

children Elijah, 14, Luke, 12, and 

Ebony, 9, have been encouraging 

her to give it a shot. 

“My kids are overwhelmingly 

excited for me to compete, they 

all encouraged me from the 

beginning.” 

One of her passions is 

nurturing young people – she 

has fostered nine children over 

the years. 

“It was an opportunity to 

invest in them and bring change 

into their lives. I tried to give 

them a new focus and new 

paths.” 

The cost of travelling and 

competing is high and she has 

had to find ways to fundraise for 

the trip. 

“I’ll be holding free farm visits 

and pony rides for children with 

Autism and special needs on July 

12.” 

She said she owes a lot to her 

friends and everyone else who 

has helped her. 

“I don’t get all the big sponsors 

or anything, so I wouldn’t be able 

to do this without their support.”

to recycle their unused 

single-use plastic bags with 

support from the district 

council. 

The national ban on 

single-use plastic bags 

came into effect on July 

1 – and the district council 

is offering businesses a 

second chance to ditch 

their leftover bags. 

The programme will 

see the council collect 

the bags for free and send 

them to a recycling plant

research to benefit birds.

presented with the award 

at a recent Birds NZ branch 

meeting. 

He said although the 

award is flattering, he’s 

most proud of how he and 

other city council staff have 

helped improve outcomes 

for local birds.

for processing. Retailers 

and charity shops in the 

district with unused, clean 

plastic bags will be able to 

drop them off at the Pines 

Resource Recovery Centre 

until Friday, August 2. 

The bags must:

pre-consumer bags). 

•Be made of HDPE 

(supermarket-type) or 

LDPE (usually more 

durable) plastic.

Rolleston’s MidlandPort exceeds 

Since it started operating 

three years ago, 

MidlandPort has exceeded 

expectations and is now 

looking to expand 

MIDLANDPORT in Rolleston is 

fast becoming an integral part of 

Canterbury’s supply chain. 

Last month 11 per cent of 

Lyttelton Port Company’s 

entire containerised volume 

moved through the inland port, 

cementing its place as a hub for 

the South Island’s imports and 

exports. 

LPC marketing manager 

Simon Munt said since 

MidlandPort started operating 

just over three years ago, it 

has continually exceeded 

expectations. 

“In 2016, two or three trains 

a week were moving containers 

to and from Midland to the port 

(LPC). Now KiwiRail operate up 

to 16 return services a week from 

Midland,” he said. 

“Not only is this taking up to 

195 one-way truck trips off the 

road each day, it is ensuring that 

containers are moved to and 

from the port efficiently without 

traffic delays and at lowest cost to 

customers.”

have been able to calculate that 

they are benefiting from up to a 

50 per cent reduction in carbon 

emissions by using a supply chain 

which includes MidlandPort. 

“Like LPC, many of our 

customers have strong 

commitments to sustainability 

and ambitious carbon emission 

reduction targets, so we’re 

focused on helping them achieve 

those targets. As part of their 

supply chain, we can assist them 

to reach their goals by offering 

carbon efficient logistics solutions 

and tools to accurately evaluate 

different options.”

LINCOLN HIGH percussion 

group Let’s Hit Stuff has had 

great success this term. 

The group won the ensemble 

section at Big Bang, a percussion 

competition held in Christchurch 

recently. The group then 

competed at the Chamber Music 

competition and went through to 

the regional finals, where it took 

out bronze.

new class at the school 

called Conspiracy 

AT THE beginning of semester 

two, Rolleston College 

introduced a new, modern and 

mind-bending class for their 

senior learners. 

Early on in the year, select 

junior learners and staff came 

together with an idea of having a 

conspiracy theory class. 

This class is just a more 

developed form of the junior 

class from 2018 – Proof. (Proof 

is based on crimes and trying to 

find evidence and proof). 

The Conspiracy class is about 

“diving deep” into a theory you 

are passionate about and want to 

research. 

Said principal Steve Saville: “It 

was designed to enable learners 

to have the chance to question 

what they read with a discerning 

eye. In the modern age of unlimited 

information, there is a need 

for young people to develop the 

ability to question what is fact 

and what is fiction. It mixes science 

and english curriculum.” 

All of the classes at Rolleston 

College are very different and 

SCHOOLS 

significant to the college itself. 

Mixing NCEA subjects together 

(science and english) means 

that learners have to enable and 

gain transferable skills which 

they can take from one subject to 

another. 

Doing so will develop 

authentic contexts where subjects 

are seen as ‘connected’, as they 

are in the real world and not 

compartmentalised. 

Mr Saville and his staff are 

wanting to bring the best out 

of every learner that is why the 

college mixes NCEA subjects 

and creates wide-spaced 

classrooms. Doing so is setting 

everyone up for reality after their 

schooling years. 

Rolleston College is promoting 

conspiracy theories because 

it gets everyone to create 

discussions with their peers, 

parents and teachers, meanwhile, 

they are learning how to 

communicate well, critically 

think and it gets them to think 

about how to persuade and pitch 

their side of the story. 

Conspiracy theories range 

from insane to well-fabricated 

stories people either believe 

or are just sitting on the fence 

about. 

The learners at Rolleston are 

able choose any conspiracy 

theory they would like – ie 

9/11, Area 51 (aliens), the moon 

landing, Illuminati and even the 

flat earth theory. 

Overall, this class is very 

different to your usual one and 

has multiple ways of improving 

the learners at Rolleston College. 

It gets them to think and 

communicate with detail in 

every class.

Week of highs and lows 

AS PART of the Matariki 

celebrations, Vittoria 

recently had her first hangi 

meal. 

She loved it so much she 

started using a fork on her 

own just to eat it. I’m not 

even exaggerating, it was 

literally the first time she’d 

used a fork on her own. A 

fork she took off Laura. 

She was even scooping 

wee bits up to feed to her 

grandparents in exchange 

for more chicken. 

After munching down on 

the stuffing, pumpkin and 

potato on her own plate, 

she was banging on Laura’s 

potato with her fork for 

more. 

Truly, her father’s daughter. 

This week has not been 

so full of fun however, I’ve 

been sick with a cold and a 

cough, the first time since 

becoming the stay-at-home 

parent. 

I also had my first 

“concerned parent” trip 

to the 24-hour surgery on 

Tuesday. 

To save those who read 

last week’s edition from 

further poo-based trauma, 

I’ll quickly summarise 

the reason; there was the 

stinkyness, ’twas a strange

But not wasted time; I was 

reassured and what I was 

worried about was a totally 

legit concern. I am winning 

at parenting. 

So finally, to the family 

who kindly lent me books 

and toys for Vittoria to help 

entertain her and to the 

wee lad who chatted with 

her through the long wait, 

thank you.

Injury hampers lock’s Crusaders camp

INJURY HAS struck at 

the worst time for Lincoln 

Combined lock Sam Scott. 

The year 12 Ellesmere College 

student suffered a hand injury, 

which has hampered his ability 

to impress selectors at the 

Crusaders Junior Knights camp 

this week. 

Scott has his hand in a cast 

and is only able to play a limited 

part in the camp at St Andrew’s 

College. He and captain Wil 

Gualter are both at the camp. 

Lincoln Combined coach 

Tom Hooper said Scott’s hand 

injury was unlikely to end 

his season but would clearly 

hamper his chances of making a 

development team. 

Two squads will be chosen 

at the conclusion of the camp 

– one will travel to Timaru to 

play a Highlanders under-18 

team on Friday, while the other 

will head to Blenheim to play 

a return fixture from last year 

against a Chiefs under-18 side at 

Lansdowne Park on Saturday. 

Gualter was knocked out and 

concussed at the camp last year.

teammates, open-side flanker 

Blair Ryall and hooker Brandyn 

Boyle, made the wider training 

group but will also take part in 

the camp. 

Hooper said he is thrilled all 

four players have the chance to 

take part. 

“It shows that the combined 

team approach works and it’s 

reward for these four guys.” 

Hooper said Gualter will 

be eager to show what he can 

do among the best secondary 

school players in Canterbury. 

He also said Scott, who is 

a year 12 Ellesmere College 

student, is a defensive force and 

a hard worker in the engine 

room. 

“He’s a rock solid player for us, 

is tireless on defence, has great 

shoulders and has been vital for 

us this year.” 

Hooper praised Boyle’s workrate, 

especially when it came to 

his ball carrying. 

He said the unluckiest player 

is Ryall, who is in the wider 

training group. 

“I can’t believe Blair didn’t 

make the full squad,” he said.

This is what Darfield Community Response Team (DCRT) has 

been working towards since its establishment eight years ago. 

The DCRT has been working alongside key contacts in our 

neighbourhoods to ensure that our community is connected 

in the event of an emergency— we call them street contacts. 

In Darfield, the team of street contact volunteers is growing, 

but there are still many streets without a key contact. This is 

something that the DCRT are keen to address, so that Darfield 

has a strong network of people who will provide information 

and support their neighbours in an emergency. 

The DCRT is hosting a high tea on Saturday 27 July, 3.30pm 

at the Darfield Recreation Centre celebrating eight years 

and they have opened the invitation to anyone interested in 

learning about the role of street contact and the Community 

Response Team.

With just one round to go, the 

semi-finalists look set unless 

fourth-placed Darfield loses to 

bottom-of-the-table Rolleston 

and defending champions 

Waihora beat Prebbleton. 

Springston, Southbridge and 

Lincoln look set to be in the 

play-offs. 

The penultimate round produced 

some tight fixtures, with 

four of the five matches decided 

by seven points or less. 

Springston’s unbeaten run 

came to an end at the hands of 

Lincoln 20-19. 

Waihora fell short away from 

home to Southbridge 27-21, 

Darfield got the win they needed

Glowing with pride for 

award winning festival 

Profiling our Selwyn Awards 2018 winners. Hororata Night Glow Festival took out the 2018 

Tourism Award. 

What started as a “cool idea”, has grown in just two short years to be the largest event in the 

Selwyn district. 

That “cool idea” combined with hard work and community involvement saw an astounding 14,000 

people at the 2019 Hororata Night Glow Festival. 

Ballooning Canterbury and the Hororata Community Trust, invite balloonists from all over New 

Zealand to the festival, putting on a spectacular show of balloons lighting up in unison to music. 

Together with live music, children’s entertainment, science demonstrations and street food the 

festival draws visitors to the district from far and wide. 

Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer Cindy Driscoll says winning the Tourism Award at 

the 2018 Selwyn Awards—just after the first Night Glow—was amazing recognition. “It meant 

so much to our community and was amazing recognition for all the hard work that the Trust, our 

volunteers and balloonists put into making this event happen” she says. 

“Our aim was to showcase our district, provide a platform for our community groups to promote 

their various activities and invite people from all over to enjoy an amazing event with us. Winning 

the tourism award was recognition that we had achieved all of this.” 

It was a “no brainer” to enter the 2018 Selwyn Awards as their reputation in the district was 

growing, Ms Driscoll says. “It’s a great initiative, so it made sense to get involved and enter the 

Night Glow in the Tourism category. I would encourage anyone to enter. It was a very rewarding 

experience and is a great celebration of everything the Selwyn district has achieved.” 

As for the future of the Night Glow, “it’s only going to get bigger,” she says.

Banned bags offered second life 

Businesses in Selwyn are being given a chance to recycle their unused single-use plastic bags with the 

support of the Selwyn District Council. 

With the national ban on businesses distributing single-use plastic bags coming into effect this month, 

some councils in the Canterbury region have teamed up to offer businesses a second chance with their 

leftover bags. 

The programme will see councils collect the bags for free and send them to a recycling plant for 

processing, with the aim of preventing large stocks of unused bags being sent to landfills. 

All retailers and charity shops in Selwyn that have unused stocks of clean single-use plastic bags will 

be able to drop them off at the Pines Resource Recovery Centre in Rolleston until Friday 2 August. 

Solid Waste manager Andrew Boyd says the Council was keen to join to the programme and provide a 

positive alternative for businesses left with unused bags. 

“We know lots of businesses could have bags left over. The point of the ban is to get these bags out 

of circulation and stop them ending up in the environment so it would have been unfortunate if it led to 

bags being dumped, especially before being used.” 

The bags must: 

· Be new (the recycling company will only accept pre-consumer bags), AND 

· Be made of HDPE (supermarket type) or LDPE (usually more durable) plastic, AND 

· Have carry handles (including die cut handles), 

Degradable, biodegradable or oxo-degradable bags are not included as they cannot currently be 

recycled. Because only clean and unused bags are being accepted, household plastic bags are also 

not included in this campaign. 

Businesses unsure as to whether their bags are included in the ban can find information 

on mfe.govt.nz/waste/plastic-bag-ban. 

Selwyn achieves best council 

credit rating in New Zealand 

Selwyn District Council has received the highest credit rating of 

any council in New Zealand after being awarded a AA+ by ratings 

agency Fitch Ratings 

The rating is the same as both the New Zealand sovereign rating 

and the Local Government Funding Agency for local currency. 

The rating is a measure of the Council’s ability to meet its financial 

commitments and the rating means that the Council is at very low 

risk of defaulting on its loans. 

In its assessment Fitch Ratings took into account of the strength of 

the Council’s financial management and of the district’s economy, 

driven by population growth. 

It recognised the Council’s prudent financial forecasts and the 

diversity of the district’s economy including professional, scientific 

and technological services. 

Council chief executive David Ward says the rating shows the 

financial strength of the district and the Council’s work to set 

Selwyn up for the future. 

“This is a reflection of the growth in the Selwyn district, but also of 

the good work done by the Council in responding to that growth 

and planning its economic future well. A lot of hard work has been 

put in by staff to ensure we’re handling our finances in the best 

way for Selwyn now and into the future and we’re delighted that is 

reflected in the rating.” 

It is the first time the Council has sought a credit rating. The rating 

will support the significant capital investment it is making to match 

the booming growth of the district, and the efforts to do this in a 

prudent financial manner that sets up the district for the future. 

Plasterboard recycling growing 

in Selwyn 

A new programme to recycle plasterboard is proving popular and 

putting nutrients back into the Canterbury land. 

The Council’s Pines Resource Recovery Park in Rolleston is now 

accepting new plasterboard offcuts for recycling. Previously 

the board went to landfill. Now these offcuts are turned into soil 

conditioner to rejuvenate tough soils. 

In six weeks almost 15 tonnes has been dropped off by builders 

and tradespeople or recovered from the general waste by staff. The 

board costs the same to dispose of as garden waste, which is less 

than half the cost of general waste. 

Used, painted or glued plasterboard is not being accepted because 

it contaminates the clean product. 

Solid Waste manager Andrew Boyd says builders had been asking 

for a recycling option, and staff are always looking for ways to 

reduce landfill. The popularity of the scheme so far showed it was 

clearly meeting a need. 

“This was a good opportunity to benefit the district twice over by 

both reducing landfill and improving our soil so we’re really pleased 

to see how well it’s working already.”

New Levi Park playground 

ready for action 

The playground on Stern Crescent in Levi Park has recently reopened 

following new equipment installations. 

The equipment replaces the existing playground, which had to be removed 

after drainage and slumping issues caused a safety issue for users. 

A 4.2 metre high net climber and a spinner bowl are among the new items 

included in the playground. 

The previous equipment is planned to be installed at a different playground 

in Rolleston where the ground conditions are firmer and more suitable. 

Disposing of hot ashes 

A warm fire in the fireplace is one of the best things about winter, but without care it can quickly 

become a hazard. One of the easiest ways fires start is not disposing properly of hot ashes. Ashes can 

stay hot long after a fire has gone out and they can and do start fires in household rubbish bins. Hot 

ashes have also started fires in rubbish trucks and transfer stations. 

The Council is reminding people to be careful and protect your home and others. Always remember – 

bucket, bag it and bin it. 

· Bucket – put ash in a metal bucket with water for at least five days 

· Bag it – place cold ash in a plastic bag 

· Bin it – place the bag of ashes in the red rubbish bin

the Rams a good old-fashioned 

hiding, 48-12, without needing 

any gifts and they’d be entitled to 

do so. 

But the fact remains that 

three of the Old Boys tries in 

the top-six club rugby match at 

Lincoln University on Saturday 

came from poor passes by home 

players. 

The Rams were down by just 

7-12 early in the second half, 

Sam Gilbert having crossed in 

fine fashion after Rameka Poihipi 

held his ground nicely. 

They were still in the game 

towards the end of the third 

quarter when Poihipi, having 

shifted in to first-five, slipped the 

Old Boys defence with ease. 

Take out the first two gift tries 

to Old Boys and the score would 

have been 12-12 at that point. 

The Rams were seriously under 

strength going into this match. 

Lachie Jones was promoted from 

second division (he had a top 

display there the previous week)

The Selwyn Netball Centre are proud 

to be sending our u17 representative 

team to the Netball New Zealand 

u17 National Tournament being held 

in Auckland’s Waitakere next week. 

The national tournament will provide 

an opportunity for these players to 

develop their own play as well as 

take on competition at the highest 

available for their age group. This will 

allow them to develop their netball 

skills and learn how to adapt to a 

variety of playing styles that they will 

experience from different teams from 

throughout New Zealand. 

The girls are very fortunate to be in 

the capable hands of coach Dawn 

Bishop. Dawn is an experienced 

coach who brings a wealth of 

knowledge to the team and is able 

to encourage players so they are 

playing at their best. Justine Caunce 

is our assistant coach. Another 

experienced coach, from one of our 

own clubs Ellesmere Combined. 

Kiri Thompson is the team manager. 

Kiri’s main goal is to ensure the 

wellbeing of the players while they’re 

away including assisting them to 

manage any niggles and injuries. Kiri 

also oversees all the tournament 

paperwork and keeps everything 

on track for the team. Kiri has been 

a big part of the Selwyn Netball 

teams for a number seasons. Her 

role also includes overseeing meals 

and ensuring the players also access 

medical treatment if necessary. 

Preparation for the tournament has 

been intense with practises and 

lead up tournaments. The players 

are developing into a strong unit, 

creating more cohesive combinations 

and making the most of the skills 

each player brings to the team. 

We would like to take this

to disrupt them and I think we 

managed that quite well.

third round commences, was not 

a bad thing. 

“We struck some adversity on 

the court and didn’t handle it as 

well as I would have liked. 

“We’re disappointed to have 

lost but it’s certainly not the end 

of the world.”

Control pests through winter spraying 

THE BEST antidote to a pest and 

disease-ridden spring garden is 

thorough winter spraying. 

Nothing toxic is required — 

simply give plants a good dowsing 

of copper spray, followed a week 

later by an application of spraying 

oil. Both of these are regarded as 

organic. 

Repeat three times over the 

winter months to kill both overwintering 

insect eggs and disease 

spores. It’s especially important 

to spray fruit trees (including 

citrus), roses and other deciduous 

plants, as well as any plants 

badly infested with insect pests or 

disease last summer. 

In fact, you should spray the 

entire garden, but wait for any 

winter-flowering plants to finish 

blooming before you begin. 

Garden pests lurk in the most 

unexpected places. 

Check the undersides of leaves 

for scale insects, and leaf sheaths 

and stems for mealybug and 

scale. 

Look for silvering of leaves on 

evergreen shrubs and trees including 

rhododendrons, camellias 

and pieris. 

This silvering indicates the 

presence of thrips. Spray oil to 

clean these up and reduce their 

numbers for spring. Collect 

diseased fallen leaves and place in 

the rubbish bin (not the organics 

bin). 

Spray the ground around infected 

plants with copper spray to 

help kill disease spores. 

Winter-hardy weeds can 

overrun the garden, making 

control in spring a nightmare. 

Spray with fast-acting glyphosate 

or dig out hard-to-kill weeds such 

as dock. 

Once weeding is done, fork 

compost through soil and mulch 

with a 10cm layer of fine bark or 

pea straw. 

BACKYARD CRITTERS 

NEW ZEALAND’S native 

terrestrial gastropod (slug 

and snail) fauna is among 

the richest in the world 

with an estimated 35,000 

species. 

Human activity has 

unfortunately helped to 

spread species outside their 

original range, including 29 

species that have now naturalised 

in New Zealand. 

A small inconspicuous 

snail you will find in your 

backyard is a cosmopolitan

The new private gym in West Melton,

Vision College’s free 20-week Certificate in Business 

(Administration and Technology) is a level 3 course 

that offers computer skills within a business focus for 

those wanting to retrain for modern office systems. 

The course is designed for those wanting to run 

the admin side of their own business, work in an 

administration role, or upskill. While covering 

computer applications like Microsoft Word, Excel 

and Publisher, it includes business report writing, 

communication skills and creating business 

documents. 

Vision College’s self-paced course allows students to 

work through a series of computer-based skills with 

tutor support, at times that suit their lifestyle. “Classes 

are held during normal working hours, but we can be 

flexible with hours that best suit our student’s lifestyle.”

“So, the learning is delivered by way of a workbook,

community centre 

It has been an exciting time in the history of 

Risingholme Community Centre with the Mayoral 

Opening of Risingholme Homestead on a frosty June 

the 5th morning. The official opening was followed by 

a Community Open Day on Saturday the 8th June when 

members of the community and friends of Risingholme 

were welcome to tour the refurbished homestead and 

hall as well as participate in various demonstrations 

and events that were run throughout the day. 

After over 8 years Risingholme Community Centre’s 

office is once more operating from the Risingholme 

Homestead at 22 Cholmondeley Avenue, Opawa. 

Risingholme Community Centre continues to offer 

a wide range of exciting learning opportunities across 

the city. With the start of term 3, Monday 29th July, just 

around the corner why not enrol in one of our exciting

Risingholme’s strong focus on language development

strings and at 6 the recorder is a great 

instrument to learn. In 2019 we have a

includes a recorder and a book!! 

Older children and adults may opt for 

group or individual lessons on a specific 

instrument (including voice). With six 

orchestras, two concert bands, a Big Band, 

a jazz combo, six wind ensembles, rock 

bands, two choirs, chamber groups, a 

samba band and a guitar ensemble there is 

an ensemble to suit all levels and all ages.

How you heat your home depends on a number of 

factors. Figuring out the best way to heat your home 

continues to be a matter for debate. 

Several things are undisputed. A warm, dry 

home is essential for comfort and good health, good 

insulation dramatically increases the efficiency of 

any heating system and ventilation is an important 

consideration. 

Most homes are heated by electricity, gas, or wood. 

In New Zealand, heating accounts for approximately 

30 percent of a home’s annual energy consumption. 

There are many things you can do to reduce 

consumption and cost. 

The World Health Organisation recommends a 

temperature of 18 deg C for indoor living areas, and 

slightly less for bedrooms. It recommends slightly 

higher temperatures for vulnerable people – the 

elderly and small children. Studies have shown that 

indoor temperatures below 12 degrees can disrupt 

sleep. 

Among all these considerations, how you heat 

your home is a matter of personal choice, with many 

options available. 

Heat pumps are generally the most common and 

cost-effective form of home heating in New Zealand. 

Used properly, they heat quickly and are convenient. 

However, you need to have the right sized unit for 

the area and they don’t work when electricity is not 

available. They tend to be room-specific but ducted 

heat pumps are becoming more popular and are 

cost-effective, especially in new builds, but can also 

be installed into established homes. 

Modern wood burners may be the closest you 

can get to an open-fire feel, but are much more 

efficient. Wood is generally a renewable fuel, and if 

you have a cheap or free supply, a wood burner may 

be the least expensive heating option. They heat 

large areas and are not dependent on electricity but 

there is the chopping and stacking to be done, flues 

need to be cleaned regularly and older models can 

contribute to air pollution and may violate strict air 

quality regulations – www.mfe.govt.nz has detailed 

information regarding this. 

Pellet fires are typically more efficient than wood 

burners but can have a smaller output. They require 

electricity but some have a battery backup and they 

are thermostatically controlled with timers. These 

must comply with regulations which are also detailed 

on the Ministry for the Environment website. 

Gas heating is common and convenient. Central 

heating systems can be zone controlled and provide 

warm air circulation. Flued gas heaters are best, as 

unflued and portable gas heaters produce lots of 

moisture and emit pollutants that can be unsafe. 

Flued gas heating systems can be installed in most 

homes. They are fast heating and are relatively 

inexpensive to run. However gas is not a renewable 

resource and prices can vary widely. 

The greatest source of energy is actually free. 

Harnessing the sun can dramatically reduce heating 

costs and is the most environmentally friendly way to 

heat your home. Passive heating combines insulation 

with good design, accomplished more effectively 

in new builds but also able to be incorporated into 

existing homes. 

Getting the sun’s warmth into your home is a 

function of the design; keeping it in is a function 

of the insulation. There is a wealth of information 

online as passive heating becomes normative in the 

design and building industry.

smarterhomes.org.nz have comprehensive 

information on and tips for, heating your home in 

the colder months.
