Waihora will need form reversal to
SELWYN TIMES
• By Jacob Page
WAIHORA WILL be sweating
on a major upset if they are to
make the top-four of rugby’s
Coleman Shield on Saturday.
With just one round to go, the
semi-finalists look set unless
fourth-placed Darfield loses to
bottom-of-the-table Rolleston
and defending champions
Waihora beat Prebbleton.
Springston, Southbridge and
Lincoln look set to be in the
play-offs.
The penultimate round produced
some tight fixtures, with
four of the five matches decided
by seven points or less.
Springston’s unbeaten run
came to an end at the hands of
Lincoln 20-19.
Waihora fell short away from
home to Southbridge 27-21,
Darfield got the win they needed
24-17 over West Melton, BDI
sneaked past Rolleston 31-30,
while Prebbleton had a convincing
40-17 win over Hornby.
Waihora coach Joff Mooar said
his team probably had left their
run too late, but he said the team
would do what they can control
to make the playoffs.
“Last year we didn’t suffer injuries,
and last week we had eight
of our starting 15 unavailable,”
he said.
“We haven’t given up hope but
it’s unlikely we’ll make it.”
Lincoln co-coach Kris
Patridge said the early pressure
his team was able to put on
Springston paid off.
“We tried to take it to them as
much as we could in the first 20
minutes and we were up early
14-5 and I think that gassed us in
the later stages,” he said.
“We made our own luck and
were able to hold on which was
pleasing.”
Darfield coach Kris Rodgers
said four tries to his outside
backs proved to be the he difference
over a determined West
Melton.
Alex Parker’s second try late in
the second half proved decisive
and broke the 17-all deadlock.
Hamish Catherwood also
scored twice for Darfield.
Rolleston let a 25-7 lead slip
against BDI to go down by a
point.
Prebbleton got their attack
working with a comfortable win
over Hornby thanks to a six-try
display.
There was a moment’s silence
before the Southbridge and
Waihora match for Southbridge
player Scott Happer who died
suddenly last week.
Lincoln Combined also
performed their haka before the
match as a tribute as Scott was
