Old Boys would say they gave the Rams a good old-fashioned hiding, 48-12, without needing any gifts and they’d be entitled to do so. But the fact remains that three of the Old Boys tries in the top-six club rugby match at Lincoln University on Saturday came from poor passes by home players. The Rams were down by just 7-12 early in the second half, Sam Gilbert having crossed in fine fashion after Rameka Poihipi held his ground nicely. They were still in the game towards the end of the third quarter when Poihipi, having shifted in to first-five, slipped the Old Boys defence with ease. Take out the first two gift tries to Old Boys and the score would have been 12-12 at that point. The Rams were seriously under strength going into this match. Lachie Jones was promoted from second division (he had a top display there the previous week) SPORT but he was the only hooker the side had with Nic Souchon (mutilated ear) and Callum Burrell (leg infection) out of action. When Jones came off 12min from the end it was down to uncontested scrums. Ben Crawford was the only frontrow player on the bench and he was still feeling the effects of a shoulder injury sustained the previous week. Crawford came on for the last few minutes on Saturday. But look on the bright side. Cullen Grace and Fletcher Newell, both New Zealand under-20 players this year, will be back this week (against Shirley) as will loosehead prop Harrison Courtney. Souchon probably won’t get any satisfaction from it but the player who kicked him in the head the previous week, Christchurch No. 8 Hugh Renton, has been banned for five weeks. The Rams are now third on the top-six table, three points behind Shirley and Old Boys and a bonus point ahead of Marist Albion. Shirley pose a distinct threat on the last day of section play this Saturday. SELWYN NETBALL U17 TEAM NATIONAL TOURNAMENT - Waitakere, Auckland 15-18 July 2019 The Selwyn Netball Centre are proud to be sending our u17 representative team to the Netball New Zealand u17 National Tournament being held in Auckland’s Waitakere next week. The national tournament will provide an opportunity for these players to develop their own play as well as take on competition at the highest available for their age group. This will allow them to develop their netball skills and learn how to adapt to a variety of playing styles that they will experience from different teams from throughout New Zealand. The girls are very fortunate to be in the capable hands of coach Dawn Bishop. Dawn is an experienced coach who brings a wealth of knowledge to the team and is able to encourage players so they are playing at their best. Justine Caunce is our assistant coach. Another experienced coach, from one of our own clubs Ellesmere Combined. Kiri Thompson is the team manager. Kiri’s main goal is to ensure the wellbeing of the players while they’re away including assisting them to manage any niggles and injuries. Kiri also oversees all the tournament paperwork and keeps everything on track for the team. Kiri has been a big part of the Selwyn Netball teams for a number seasons. Her role also includes overseeing meals and ensuring the players also access medical treatment if necessary. Preparation for the tournament has been intense with practises and lead up tournaments. The players are developing into a strong unit, creating more cohesive combinations and making the most of the skills each player brings to the team. Greenpark B coach Casey Ashton praised her team’s composure, after they led for all of the match but had to withstand a Broadfield comeback in the fourth quarter. In other results, Greenpark A moved to the top of the competition after a commanding 54-42 win over Lincoln and Southbridge went a long way to ensure they would stay in the top grade while denting West Melton’s hopes thanks to a 71-50 triumph. “We wanted to put pressure on their shooting end and try to disrupt them and I think we managed that quite well. Mechelle Barltrop impressed for Greenpark B in the defensive circle and helped contribute to a strong performance. Broadfield coach Yvonne Crichton-Hill said a loss for her team before the all important third round commences, was not a bad thing. “We struck some adversity on the court and didn’t handle it as well as I would have liked. “We’re disappointed to have lost but it’s certainly not the end of the world.” Greenpark A coach Zaylie Sullivan said it was a plus to have her team continue to build on their momentum. “We’ve had life get in the way so to speak with players being away but considering we list to Lincoln in the first round, I’ll take the 20-goal swing in our favour. The 15-year-old defender will be part of the New Zealand team which will compete against three yet-to-be-confirmed Asian teams at a tournament in Weifang from July 14 to 22. It is a chance for some warmup games before attention turns to qualifying for the 2020 under-17 World Cup in India, next September.
