Accommodation
providers may
have to register
ACCOMMODATION providers
including Airbnb operators could
be made to register with the city
council.
This comes after Local Government
New Zealand agreed to support
the city council’s request to require
all short-term accommodation providers,
including Airbnb operators,
to register with their local council.
It has also given the green light to
a second city council remit seeking
Government funding for additional
research into the effects on people’s
health of nitrates in drinking water.
Both remits were passed with at
least 70 per cent support from the
sector.
Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner said
it was pleasing to see the remits becoming
official policy to be actioned
by LGNZ.
“I was pleased to see both of our remits
strongly supported by the Local
Government sector at the meeting,
indicating the significance of these
issues for other councils nationwide,”
he said.
“Now that the remits are official
policy to be actioned by LGNZ, they
will be campaigning at a central
government level, including engaging
with the respective ministers.
It is great to have this support from
LGNZ to further raise the profile of
these important matters.”
Online movies for library users

Libraries members can now
use their library cards to access
thousands of the world’s best
films and documentaries for
free online.
For the first time, library
members can use on-demand
streaming service Kanopy, an
international platform that
provides easy access to about
17,000 titles – including some
of New Zealand’s most highrating
movies.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson says Kanopy is a
“game changer,” providing a
portal to some of the finest
films and documentaries, along
with an eclectic mix of learning
resources and content for
children.
“Kanopy offers a carefully
curated collection of fine films,
award-winning documentaries,
festival favourites, rare works,
classics and independent and
world titles,” Ms Robertson
says.
“Children can also access
Kanopy Kids, which has
parental controls to limit
content to age-appropriate
levels,” she says.
“The Kanopy film library
complements our focus
news online at www.star.kiwi
on cultural values and
commitment to diversity,
opening up library services to
an even wider section of the
community.
“Library members can simply
sign up to begin streaming
these films and programmes
instantly.”
Cardholders need their
library card number and pin,
along with a password, to set up
a Kanopy account to access the
video streaming service
and view up to 10 films each
month.
Kanopy can be streamed
from a computer, television,
mobile device or platform by
downloading the Kanopy app
for iOS, Android, AppleTV or
Chromecast.
