Seven charged
following
violent assault
on inmate
• By Sophie Cornish
A VIOLENT prison yard attack
against an inmate has resulted
in seven prisoners being
charged with assault.
All seven of the Christchuch
Men’s Prison inmates have been
charged with wounding with
intent to cause grievous bodily
harm following the attack in the
prison’s yard on June 20.
The victim was taken to
Christchurch Hospital in
moderate condition with facial
injuries, bruising and suspected
concussion, St John spokesman
Gerard Campbell said.
The men, aged 39, 23, 23, 35,
25, 28 and 31 will all appear in
the district court on various
dates next week.
Prison director Jo Harrex said
all seven prisoners were placed
on directed segregation, where
they were ‘denied association’
with other prisoners.
No weapons were used in the
attack.
“Assaults are unacceptable
and any prisoner found guilty
of an assault will be held to account,”
said Ms Harrex.
Staff used pepper spray to
control the offenders.
It is the second assault to
happen at the prison this
year.
On May 17, a prisoner used
a sharpened piece of plastic to
assault a prison guard.
