PE NEWS Year 10 Footballers make history! The Year 10 Football Team completed a brilliant and successful season, winning the South Notts Cup on Monday 24 th June. Throughout the season the team performed really well, putting in confident performances against Newark Academy, The Minster School and National Academy without conceding a goal. The semi-final against Redhill was up next and CTK started the game on the front foot and raced into an early 2-0 lead. It was a well-controlled first half display and the team was unlucky not to go in at half time with a bigger lead with a goal disallowed and hitting the post as the half drew to a close. Redhill came out fighting in the second half and pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to go. The lads showed tremendous character and fighting spirit to battle through the pressure and were rewarded with a counter attacking goal in injury time to seal a 3-1 win and place in the final. Carlton Le Willows awaited in the final at Highfield Sports Complex. It was extremely tight and tense game throughout. Both teams had decent spells of possession but excellent defensive displays from both teams meant that scoring chances were few and far between. After an even contest, both teams played out an entertaining 0-0 draw eventually going to penalties.
Christ the King lost the toss and were to take their penalties second. Carlton Le Willows went up first and missed to intensify the drama. Lewis Bottoms stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give CTK a 1-0 lead in the shootout. More drama immediately followed with a goalkeeper swap due to severe cramp to Gianni Musson meant Harvey Fisher was reinstated in goal for the rest of the shootout. He was about to make a huge impact with a crucial save and with Tom Rowlands stepping up and placing his penalty into the corner of the goal, CTK found themselves with a 2-0 lead. Carlton Le Willows missed their third penalty meaning Nico Cohen could win the Cup for CTK if he scored from the spot. Up he stepped and hit his penalty into the roof of the net with too much pace for the goalkeeper to have a chance to save. CTK celebrated wildly to win the South Notts Cup. Firstly, I would like to thank all the students involved this season. They have shown incredible character this year along with commitment and a desire to succeed. It has been a pleasure to manage this team. Well done lads! Also a huge thank you to members of staff who gave up their free time to come and support the team in the final. It gave the boys a massive boost and they really appreciated the support during the game. Looking forward to another successful season in Year 11. Mr Slater
