So you’ve never been...
SKATEBOARDING
ONE OF MY FRIENDS at school once bought a skateboard to walk around with in the hopes of
passing himself off as cool. That was until someone pointed out the clean wheels were giving him
away. Don’t be like him.
Why go? With skateboarding added to the programme for the Summer Olympics next year in
Tokyo, now is the time to perfect your flip tricks and ollies. And if the kids need any inspiration,
eleven-year-old Sky Brown is set to compete as part of Team GB.
Where can I do it? There are skate parks in Homefield Park, on Beach Green in Lancing
(which came about after lengthy campaigning from local children) and in Shoreham.
I could do with some pointers! Dale Lay runs the free South Coast Skate Club on
Saturday mornings in Homefield Park for kids and adults alike (FB @SCSCWorthing). Or head over
to Brighton Youth Centre where they run sessions for younger children at their indoor skate park to
teach them the basics, as well as She Shredders for girls from 13 years up.
What about the kit? Family-run Alleyoops is a good starting point down on Worthing
seafront, or head over to Chi and talk to Jamie at ESP.
Anything else? Pro-skater Lucy Adams, UK’s number 1 in 2013, worked as an active
communities officer for young people in Worthing until 2016 and is now chairwoman and a founding
member of not-for-profit body Skateboard England. She even custom made her own skateboard with
local luthier (maker of stringed instruments) David Simmons. n
