kitchen sink at the National 

Kitchen and Bathroom 

Association Excellence in 

Design awards. Her business, 

Detail by Davinia Sutton, 

bagged 12 out of 40 awards 

at a ceremony in Melbourne, 

including the top designer of the 

year accolade. 

Several of her projects cleaned 

up, including a high-end, 

traditionally styled kitchen 

and bathroom in a Merivale 

home, as well as a modern 

kitchen and bathroom in a 

Fendalton home.

A NEW health hub will bring 

back much-needed business to 

Bishopdale Village Mall. 

That’s the view of long-time 

Bishopdale Sports World owner 

Tony Ralfe after plans for the 

new health hub were displayed 

at the mall on Friday. 

“I’d like to think it will bring 

more people to Bishopdale and 

hopefully it will help us,” he 

said. 

The hub will have a pharmacy, 

cafe, multiple treatment and 

consultation rooms and upstairs 

space which is yet to be filled. 

It is due to open next year in 

the former Mitre 10 building, 

which has been empty for about 

three years. 

“It’s going to be a wee while 

before it’s up and running, 

but at least it will stop people 

coming in and asking ‘do you 

know what’s happening in 

Mitre 10?” Mr Ralfe said.

Consent for supermarket sought 


PROPOSAL: The proposed Pak’nSave on Main North Rd will include underground parking and 

a self-service fuel station. 

FOODSTUFFS HAS applied for 

resource consent for a Pak’nSave 

supermarket and self-serve 

fuel station in Papanui, and 

the proposal is open for public 

consultation. 

The supermarket is 

proposed to be built on 

Main North Rd between the 

intersection with Cranford St 

and Northcote Rd. 

The resource consent 

application is open for public 

consultation until August 16. 

In conjunction with its 

supermarket function, the site 

will be designed to be used as an 

emergency co-ordination facility 

in times of crisis, which Civil 

Defence can utilise for disaster 

response activities. 

The proposed supermarket 

will have signalised pedestrian 

crossings across Main North 

Rd, pedestrian linkages within 

the car park and between adjacent 

sites, visitor and staff cycle 

parking and end-of-trip cycle 

facilities. 

The development is also wellpositioned 

to benefit from the 

public transportation services 

along Main North Rd. 

Papanui residents are concerned 

about the potential 

impacts this could have on the 

community, and questions were 

raised on Facebook about what 

would happen to the current 

Pak’nSave at Northlands Shopping 

Centre. 

In its economic assessment, 

Foodstuffs said: “The existing 

Northlands Pak’nSave 

store may potentially be converted 

to a smaller, New Worldbranded 

supermarket, to 

help optimise Foodstuff’s citywide 

network of stores.” 

Foodstuffs also said that the 

supermarket will support future 

demand growth: “If supermarkets 

maintain their current 

share of food retailing, growth 

in spending will support 27 new 

stores by 2043. The proposal is 

thus merely a natural market 

response to forecast growth in 

demand.” 

The proposed supermarket 

will have 278 car parking spaces 

available, with 110 of these at 

ground level, and a further 168 

in an underground car park 

below the supermarket. 

The site is primarily zoned 

industrial general, with part 

of the site zoned commercial 

local and an access lot zoned 

residential suburban. 

Resource consent is required 

for a discretionary activity 

because supermarkets are not 

provided for within industrial 

general zones. 

Hours of operation of the 

proposed supermarket will be 

between 7am and 11pm, seven 

days per week.

Fire rages, homes at risk 

WELLHEAD UPGRADE 

The city council is working 

to upgrade a wellhead on 

Thompsons Rd so the local pump 

station can supply unchlorinated 

drinking water. Work will start 

in August and will take about 

three months to complete. Once 

the work is completed, the pump 

station will no longer need to use 

a chlorine treatment. 

NORTHERN CORRIDOR 

Work has started on the kerbs 

on Cranford St opposite Kidds 

Bakery, between Innes Rd and 

Knowles St. There will be no entry 

heading east from Knowles St 

onto Cranford St until August 23. 

The bus stop on Cranford St near 

the Innes Rd intersection will be 

temporarily closed during this 

time. An interim bus stop will 

be available at 263 Cranford St. 

During this work there will be a 

footpath diversion in place, and 

there will be no on-street parking 

available near the work sites. 

$500 GRANT

‘No club left’ if courts not repaired

courts used by the Belfast 

Netball Club haven’t been 

maintained for 22 years. 

And only a small portion 

of the damage was due to the 

earthquakes, the two coaches 

said. General wear and tear, 

including cracks in the concrete, 

moss, mould and uneven 

ground, are just some of the 

courts’ historic issues. 

Ms Martin and Mrs Ellis 

made a presentation on the state 

of the courts to the Papanui- 

Innes Community Board, 

with written support from 

Belfast School and the Belfast 

Community Network. Their 

concerns have now been passed 

on to the city council. 

They are calling for the courts 

to be repaired so they can be 

used safely. 

“We’re a small club trying 

to fundraise for a community 

asset,” Mrs Ellis said. 

The courts are too dangerous 

to play netball on and elderly 

people who use them as an 

access way have fallen and been 

injured. 

One of the club’s under-17 

players also slipped over during 

pre-season training and injured 

her knee. She was unable to play

netball for the season. 

Said city council head of parks 

Andrew Rutledge: “Current 

funding for hard surface 

renewals is oversubscribed. We 

have included this project to 

resurface these netball courts 

as a candidate for the next Long 

Term Plan.” 

But Mrs Ellis said waiting for 

action in the next Long Term 

Plan could mean the club would 

have to pay about $15,000 to 

train elsewhere. 

Belfast is one of the 

largest community clubs in 

Christchurch, with 29 teams 

and 245 registered players, so 

safe courts are essential for it to 

continue functioning. 

“We are tired of hearing that it 

will have to be a long-term plan 

to get this 

addressed, 

it needs to 

happen now 

or there will 

be no club 

left for future 

players to 

enjoy.” Mrs 

Ellis said. 

The cost of

for the club to fund, with about 

$146,800 quoted to remove 

and relay the asphalt, while 

court markings and additional 

features will cost extra.

started for the project, and

businesses for support. 

Mrs Ellis said it is important 

to get the community’s support 

so the courts can be repaired 

before February when the next 

netball season starts.

Designer’s big awards haul

“overwhelmed” and “still 

coming back down to earth”

At the awards, Ms Sutton 

was hailed by the judging panel 

as outstanding and someone 

who creates timeless solutions 

regardless of the aesthetic. 

NKBA president Jared 

Dinneen called Ms Sutton one 

of the best in the business and 

a complete professional. 

The business has been 

around since 2009 and Ms 

Sutton has won a range of 

awards since. She said she has 

no specific design style but 

likes to tailor rooms to the 

architectural context of the 

home, while taking in a client’s 

taste. 

“The spaces we design really 

need to read as one with the 

home and talk with their own 

language of architecture,” she 

said. 

Nineteen kitchens and 

bathrooms, created by 

15 talented New Zealand 

designers, were recognised at 

the awards.

A GROUP of Merivale residents 

are concerned about the possible 

development of a new sports 

facility at Elmwood Park. 

The Elmwood Club is behind 

the planned new building 

which will replace the earthquake-damaged 

bowling club 

building. 

The group of neighbouring 

residents is opposed to the 

planned development for several 

reasons, including noise, drainage, 

light pollution and traffic. 

It is still in the early design 

stages and the Elmwood Club 

said it is too premature to comment 

on the project.

scale of the development could 

detract from the park’s community

THE ST ALBANS Baptist Church will 

host Living the Dream this week, a rock 

opera that you won’t want to miss. 

The show is a modern interpretation of 

the Parable of the Prodigal Son, but has 

been written in a way that it is not religious 

or designed to preach. 

Tony Norriss organised the event and 

wrote the music. He said people from any 

background can enjoy it. 

“Given the recent events the city has 

endured, a message of enduring love, reconciliation, 

and acceptance is a message 

that is needed in these times,” he said. 

The church was impressed with the 

work and agreed to provide the venue 

and help cover some of costs. The cast has 

people ranging in age from 14 to 58 and is 

made up of 10 main characters, as well as 

extras and a five-piece band. 

One of the cast members Dylan Jonkers, 

14, has been described by Norriss as a huge 

emerging talent. Dylan won a national 

music award when he was about 12 and 

his band was a finalist in the Canterbury 

Smokefreerockquest competition. 

The show will include a 5m LED screen 

to provide an additional dimension for 

scenes and add video content to help convey 

the story. 

Tickets cost $11 to $18, as Norriss 

wanted to make sure the community 

didn’t have to fork out too much for the 

event. Once the show costs are covered, a

Four Youth MPs from the Nor’West News area have returned from Wellington where they took part in the annual two-day Youth 

Parliament. A group of 120 future leaders were at the event, with each representing a member of Parliament

AS I TOOK my seat in the 

debating chamber, I began 

to wonder what on earth I’d 

gotten myself into. 

I was surrounded by some 

of the most impressive young 

New Zealanders about to engage 

in two trying days of debate, 

discussion and decisionmaking. 

Scary, right? 

I quickly realised 

I had absolutely 

nothing to worry 

about. 

All the other 

Youth MPs were 

in the exact 

same position 

as me, and 

the organisers 

were amazingly 

helpful. So I 

decided to 

step out of my 

comfort zone 

and give the 

once-in-alifetime 

opportunity 

my 

absolute 

best 

shot. 

Ahead of attending the Youth Parliament, 

I conducted a project on 

climate change with young people 

in the electorate and brought the 

views of my community with me 

to Wellington. 

It was an absolute honour to 

represent my 

community, 

particularly 

young people, at 

this event. 

I was grateful 

I had the 

opportunity 

to give a 

speech about climate change in 

the general debate, which was 

something I feel my community is 

passionate about. 

Climate change is a huge 

issue for my generation, and all 

attending were passionate about 

the need for action. 

What we do now will affect life 

in New Zealand for decades to 

come. It can’t wait. 

It was amazing to see Youth 

MPs from different communities 

declare a climate emergency. In 

spite of our differing political 

views, we agreed unanimously on 

this decision. 

I now have an increased desire 

to fight for climate action in New 

Zealand. 

We also debated a mock 

Sustainable Energy Bill, which 

was a great opportunity to air our 

thoughts on environmental issues. 

This was of particular

the world’

interest as the Government works 

through the Zero Carbon Bill. 

It was clear young people feel 

listened to by the Government 

and that our views and futures are 

valued. 

Youth Parliament was an 

amazing 

opportunity to 

immerse myself 

in the political 

world and give 

young people a 

voice. 

We were able to 

share our views in 

an open, inclusive environment. 

It showed legislators what young 

people are passionate about, and 

what change we want to see. 

Youth representation is so 

important, as we are the future 

leaders who will take care of our 

country. 

It is vital we have a say on how 

New Zealand is run now so we 

don’t have to deal with problems 

created by others later. 

I am grateful I had the

I AM STUDYING for a double 

degree in a law and arts, 

majoring in political science at 

Canterbury University. 

From a very young age, I have 

been interested in history. 

I love stories, and I think 

history tells the stories of people 

and the world, and these are the 

two things I want to be involved 

in. 

At high school, I became 

involved in UN youth events 

and the Youth Parliament. 

They helped me discover 

my interest in politics. For me, 

politics is history in the making 

and an opportunity to help 

people on a much larger scale. 

My experience at the Youth 

Parliament was amazing. 

The event was incredible, 

and I am very thankful to the 

Ministry of Youth Development, 

Office of the Clerk, and 

everyone else who supported me 

and gave me an opportunity to 

be involved. 

My favourite part of the event 

was the ‘general debate’, where 

several Youth MPs were given 

the opportunity to speak on 

issues they are concerned about. 

These topics included 

mental health, youth 

suicide, racism and cultural 

identity, climate change and 

free-speech (I would highly 

recommend watching some 

of these on YouTube if you are 

interested). 

Hearing my peers talk about 

these issues was inspirational 

and encouraged me to continue 

with my interest in politics.

Vegan options can be delicious and easy 

Vegan ingredients have flavours and textures that work really well in fritters and sausage 

rolls, giving these dishes a real depth of taste 

Vegan broccoli, black bean 

fritters 

Makes 12 

Ingredients 

1 Tbsp chia seeds 

2 Tbsp water 

2 cups broccoli florets, roughly 

cut 

1 400g can black beans, drained 

and rinsed 

¼ tsp ground fenugreek 

1 tsp salt 

¼ tsp freshly ground pepper 

½ tsp dried oregano 

¼ cup fine polenta 

Oil for frying 

Lemon wedges 

Directions 

Begin by soaking the chia 

seeds in water and set aside so 

they thicken. Put the broccoli in 

the food processor and process 

briefly. Add the beans, seasoning 

and chia mixture and blitz to 

form a thick paste. Transfer from 

the food processor to a bowl and 

taste. Adjust seasoning if needed. 

Add a tablespoon of polenta 

and mix well to combine. Roll 

into 12 evenly-sized balls, flatten 

slightly and coat in the polenta. 

Heat a large, heavy-based fry 

pan with enough oil to cover 

the base of the pan. When hot, 

add the broccoli fritters and fry 

until golden (about 5min a side). 

Remove and serve with a pinch of 

sea salt and lemon wedges. 

Vegan sausage rolls 

Ingredients 

250g chestnut mushrooms 

3 Tbsp olive oil 

2 leeks, finely chopped 

2 large garlic cloves, crushed 

1 Tbsp finely chopped sage leaves 

1 Tbsp brown rice miso 

2 tsp dijon mustard 

30g chestnuts, very finely 

chopped 

70g fresh white breadcrumbs 

1 x 320g sheet ready-rolled puff 

pastry (not the all-butter version) 

Plain flour for dusting 

Dairy-free milk (like soya milk), 

to glaze 

Directions 

Tip the mushrooms into a food 

processor and pulse until they are 

finely chopped. Put half the olive 

oil in a large frying pan, add the 

leeks and a pinch of salt and fry 

gently for 15min or until softened 

and golden brown. 

Scrape the leeks out of the pan 

into a bowl and set aside to cool 

a little. 

Heat the remaining oil in 

the pan and fry the mushrooms 

for 10min over medium heat. 

Add the garlic, sage, miso 

and mustard, and fry for a further 

1-2min. Leave to cool slightly. 

Heat the oven to about 200 deg 

C. Tip the mushroom mixture 

into the bowl with the leeks, 

then add the chestnuts and 

breadcrumbs. 

Season then mix everything 

together until you have a slightly 

stiff mixture. 

Unravel the pastry on a floured 

surface, then roll the pastry out so 

one side measures 43cm. Mould 

the mushroom and leek mixture 

into a sausage shape down the 

centre of the pastry, then bring 

the pastry up around the filling 

and seal along the seam with a 

fork. 

Cut into six pieces. Lay on a 

parchment-lined baking sheet 

and brush each piece with milk. 

Bake for 25min or until deep, 

golden brown. 

Leave to cool before serving.
