LAST FEW DAYS: North Wales Police along with forces across the country are appealing for people to
hand in unwanted guns with a two week surrender of firearms and ammunition, starting on July 20th
North Wales Police along with forces across the country are appealing for people to hand in unwanted
guns with a two week surrender of firearms and ammunition, starting on 20 July 2019.
Many firearms are held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality or are overlooked and forgotten in
people’s homes. Others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to harm, threaten and
intimidate their local communities.
The surrender gives people the chance to dispose of firearms or ammunition by simply taking them to a
designated local police station and handing them over.
The surrender will run until 4 th August 2019. Surrendering unwanted, unlicensed weapons avoids the risk
of them becoming involved in criminality and means that members of the community can dispose of
firearms in a safe place.
During this period, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession upon
surrender and can remain anonymous. However, the history of each live weapon will be checked for
evidence of its use in crimes.
Detective Superintendent Steve Williams of North Wales Police said: “Given the large rural setting of our
area, it may be that some people hold unlicensed firearms that have been handed down to them and may
have concerns as to what to do with these weapons. There may also be people who, because of the
change in legislation have a weapon they cannot legally hold. This surrender period allows them to
dispose of these weapons in a manner that can allay such fears.
“Fortunately we do not have a significant gun crime problem in North Wales. However, we are not
complacent about gun crime and we want as many guns surrendered as possible so I would encourage
the public to come forward.”
This summer’s national campaign has a particular focus on firearms, stun gun type devices and pepper
sprays. Police want to highlight the danger of these items and remind people they are illegal in this
country and could lead to a prison sentence for anyone caught in possession.
Assistant Chief Constable Helen McMillan, National Police Chief’s Council lead for Criminal Use of Firearms,
said; “The last national firearms surrender in 2017 was a success and potentially helped save lives. With the
Government’s Serious Violence Strategy underway, we feel it is the right time to ask police forces to run
another two week campaign to collect unwanted guns and ammunition. Each firearm we retrieve has the
potential to save a life, so do the right thing and surrender your weapon.
“We also want to highlight that stun guns and similar devices are illegal in the UK and may not be brought in
from abroad. They may be legal in some other countries, but if you are caught with one here you could be
prosecuted with possession of a firearm and be put behind bars. This summer’s surrender is a good
opportunity to hand in these types of devices.”
The surrender initiative is being co-ordinated by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS). The
surrender will run for two weeks from Saturday 20 July to Sunday 4 August 2019.
Detective Chief Superintendent Jo Clews, Head of NABIS, added: “This is an important national campaign co
-ordinated by NABIS. During the last decade our experts have provided police forces with ground breaking
ballistic forensic services and intelligence packages to prevent and detect gun crime. Even though UK
firearm offences remain at relatively low levels compared to other countries, we cannot be complacent and
this surrender will help remove further potential harm from our communities.”
Weapons and ammunition can be surrendered at the following police stations in North Wales – Wrexham,
Mold, Rhyl, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Caernarfon, Bangor and Holyhead. However if people are unable to
visit any of these stations they are advised to contact North Wales Police on 101 to make
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services of cold
callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes wrong with the
service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace. Some traders will quote a
price but then ask for substantially more money when the job has been
completed. Some work can be carried out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold
callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are asking for residents to be
vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any suspicious persons or activity
to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for residents to pass this information on to older, or
more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted. Reputable, local traders can be found via North
Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’ Scheme https://www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
A resident in the Lixwm area has had cold callers at their door around earlier this week, attempting to give
them a free estimate for gardening/cutting down trees/hedges. They claimed that they had been doing work
at a neighbours house. (The resident later found this to be untrue. They had not carried out any work at the
neighbours house). Eventually the cold caller left
There were two males, one went to another neighbour. They were in a small grey truck, which had a trailer
with high sides and a few branches on it. The registration number is not known. The male that came to her
door was described as around late 30’s, no distinguishable accent, stocky build, stubble on face, hair was
dark, shaved, around 5’5 ft tall, wearing grey trousers, black tee shirt. The other male was wearing an
orange hi viz jacket on. Please see advice above relating to cold callers
We have received a report that on 6th July a resident in the Hawarden Road area of Caergwrle had a person
cold call at the door, two males were stood on the driveway. The caller stated that they were from a
specialist tree company and had been working at a neighbours property and asked if the resident would like
their hedge cutting too. When asked for a quote they quoted £250 but said they would do it for £150. The
resident paid cash after the cold caller had cut three branches, and the caller then left and has not returned.
Enquiries with neighbours later revealed that they had not carried out any work at their neighbours
property.
Initially, whilst the resident went into the back garden with the cold caller there were two males also
standing on the driveway. Thankfully the resident ensured they locked the door behind them thus
preventing a potential ‘distraction burglary’
On the leaflet that had been left it stated that the company were on Ratedpeople.com but this is believed
to be untrue. Again, please see advice above relating to cold callers offering their services.
Scam Telephone Calls cont…. A resident has received a telephone call, to their mobile, that
appeared to come from a mobile number. The resident answered the phone and a male person gave the
name ‘George’ and the name of a Life Insurance company, stating that the call was regarding the residents
life insurance policy. The caller seemed to be pre-occupied with other calls that he appeared to be having at
the same time. The caller asked was it convenient to speak, the resident replied ‘No’ and the caller put the
phone down immediately. The resident does have a life insurance policy, but they knew that their mobile
phone was not associated with it. The resident was concerned this was a scam/phishing call as he did not
recognise the name provided of the Life Insurance Company and the telephone number that it came from
had too many digits.
A resident has received a number of telephone calls, claiming to be cancelling their BT Internet access. The
phone number area code shown was 01276. The resident has checked and confirmed this is a scam attempt.
Scam calls of this type can be reported to BT https://www.bt.com/help/home/scams/
Nuisance calls can be reported to ICO (Information Commissioners Office) ico.org.uk/concerns
Scam Emails/Letters/Texts A resident received e mails, claiming to be from BT . The e mails gave
the correct name of the account holder and stated they had won an iphone. It asked the recipient to ‘click
here’ to verify their correct e mail address to ‘claim’ their prize. The same recipient had another message
telling them they had won a prize, and again, asked them to ‘click here’ to verify their details.
A resident has received an e mail claiming to be related to ‘Microsoft Protection’ relating to ‘Hotmail
Service’ . The e mail asked the resident to confirm their account details by clicking on a button to avoid a
disruption of the e mail service, and that it had been included in a ‘black list’. Do not click on any links or
open any attachments of suspicious e mails. Emails, claiming to be from Hotmail can be forwarded to
abuse@hotmail.com or report_spam@hotmail.com
A resident received a text from an unknown person, late at night, from a telephone number that was just
below theirs. The text commented that they were ‘phone neighbours’ with emoji's. A friend rang the male
texter and told them not to contact them again . He then texted again . The recipient has reported the
matter to their telephone provider and is considering reporting to police. If you receive nuisance calls
please see advice from ICO. Enter details of this link into your browser https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phonestelecoms-and-internet/advice-for-consumers/problems/tackling-nuisance-calls-and-messages/protectingyourself-from-nuisance-calls-and-messages
