Born and raised on her<br />

grandparent’s Kula farm,<br />

Rose Pi‘ilani Bailey is a<br />

hula dancer and Hawaiian<br />

arts practitioner. She has<br />

learned family traditions<br />

th<strong>at</strong> have been passed<br />

down for many gener<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

and takes pride in using<br />

many n<strong>at</strong>ive Hawaiian plants and m<strong>at</strong>erials in her lei<br />

making and other hana no‘eau (arts). She uses local<br />

flowers grown <strong>at</strong> her own home, fresh from the farm,<br />

to make lei and floral arrangements. In addition, Rose<br />

collabor<strong>at</strong>es on special events such as weddings and<br />

gradu<strong>at</strong>ions, teaches the art of lei making and hula,<br />

tends to her family’s fruit and flower farms, and styles<br />

Everyone loves a flower lei! Spend the morning playing<br />

with flowers and learning to make a beautiful lei po‘o for<br />

your head. After this workshop, you’ll wear your crown<br />

proudly!<br />

Lloyd Kumula‘au Sing Jr. & May Haunani Balino-Sing are<br />

Ke Kumu Hawai‘i, a husband and wife business team who<br />

share and teach Hawaiian basketry and culture-based<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ion programs to the community. For the last 15 years,<br />

they have provided programs for community colleges,<br />

professional staff development workshops for educ<strong>at</strong>ors<br />

and practitioners, and priv<strong>at</strong>ely sponsored workshops. They are educ<strong>at</strong>ors in the public and<br />

priv<strong>at</strong>e school sectors, sharing with aloha about Hawai‘i’s host culture. kekumuhawaii.com<br />

Kumula‘au & Haunani Sing will demonstr<strong>at</strong>e how to weave some examples of ‘ie basketry and<br />

will be displaying various artifacts of the art form. In a casual and intim<strong>at</strong>e setting, they will also<br />

be able to share and answer questions about how pieces were cre<strong>at</strong>ed and the complexities th<strong>at</strong><br />

come with reinvigor<strong>at</strong>ing the cultural practice of ‘ulana ‘ie (‘ie‘ie weaving).<br />

‘Ulana ‘Ie: Beginning Hawaiian Basketry<br />

S<strong>at</strong>urday & Sunday, 2 days<br />

9:00 am – 4:00 pm / December 21 & 22<br />

This workshop will teach participants how to start and<br />

finish a basket with a cover in the tradition of Hawaiian<br />

Basketry. Participants will learn how baskets were<br />

traditionally made with ‘ie‘ie (Freycinetia arborea) and<br />

will explore the process from start to finish, including<br />

g<strong>at</strong>hering of ‘ie‘ie, prepar<strong>at</strong>ion and cleaning of the<br />

rootlets, and the final weaving into beautiful various<br />

pieces such as hīna‘i (baskets), hīna‘i i‘a (fish traps),<br />

mahiole (helmet), and ki‘i akua (war god images).<br />
