jewelry & metalsmithing Jewelry & Metalsmithing Guided Open Studio — Level 2 J.B. Rea Tuesdays, 8 weeks / 6:00 – 9:00 pm Session 1: September 3 – October 22 Session 2: October 29 – December 17 If you’ve ever wished for more guidance without having to work on a specific class assignment, this is the program for you! Teaching Artist J.B. Rea will be available for individualized assistance— answering questions and troubleshooting problems. This class is one step above Open Studio (no instruction) while allowing for a bit more freedom than the Hui’s more structured classes. Please come to class with projects! Drop-In Jewelry Basics: Bangles & Rings! — Level 1 Julie Matheis Monday, 1 day / 12:30 – 3:30 pm Session 1: September 16 Session 2: October 21 Session 3: November 18 Session 4: December 16 Hui Teaching Artist Julie Matheis will guide you through all the steps to create a wearable piece of jewelry—either bangles or stacking rings. No previous experience is required and you’ll walk away with a Maui-made keepsake—and new metalsmithing skills! We provide all the tools and metal you’ll need! For the bangles class, you are welcome to bring your own shells or charms to personalize your jewelry even more. Rea Thursdays, 6 weeks September 19 – October 24 / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm This class is the time and place to experiment with metal! J.B. will guide you along your path of discovery as you expand the possibilities of design by learning the basic elements of wax working and casting methods for the artist. Next Level Jewelry — Level 2 Beginning Jewelry — Level 1 Metal Clay Basics — Level 1 Roberta Ann Weisenburg Wednesdays, 4 weeks September 25 – October 16 / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Are you ready to create your own designs and learn new techniques? This class is for you! Students will learn to use the more advanced tools found in the Hui’s studio, improve soldering skills, and refine designs for faster and more successful fabrication. Many other techniques will be learned as students troubleshoot designs and work on individual projects. Students may come with a design idea or choose a project from Roberta’s binder of options. Refresh your skills and keep on learning! Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry or equivalent experience Tuition: $95 ($119 nonmember) Supply & Lab Fee: $35 A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description. Roberta Ann Weisenburg Session 1: Mondays, 6 weeks September 30 – November 4 / 6:00 – 9:00 pm Session 2: Wednesdays, 6 weeks October 30 – December 11 (No class on November 27) / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Get ready to create your own wearable works of art, including pendants, bracelets, earrings, and/or rings! This class teaches fundamental fabrication techniques using wire and sheet metals; students will cut, drill, saw, file, stamp, solder, pierce metal, learn polishing techniques, and bezel set a stone. Note: Shell jewelry will not be specifically addressed. Tuition: $195 ($244 nonmember) Supply & Lab Fee: $45 A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description. Roberta Ann Weisenburg Mondays, 4 weeks / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm November 18 – December 9 Metal Clay is a unique type of clay made up of microscopic particles of real metal, water, and a binder. The clay can be shaped with tools or even using just your hands! After creating your piece in clay, you’ll fire it and the water and binder will burn away, leaving you with a piece of real silver or copper metal. Students will learn the basics by using copper clay, which is a more economical material and will also have the opportunity to purchase their own silver metal clay. Tuition: $125 ($156 nonmember) Supply Fee: $65 A supply list is posted online at huinoeau.com under the class description. Shape & Form in Metal — Level 2 J.B. Rea Thursdays, 6 weeks November 7 – December 19 (No class on November 28) / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Students will gain a solid understanding of basic processes and learn more advanced types of metal forming, including hammering wire and sheet into curvilinear 3-D forms. Bracelets, boxes, and pendants all take on more interest when bent and formed by hand.
