hui holidays Hui Holidays 2019 November 20 – December 24 Open Daily / 9:00 am – 6:00 pm (Extended Hours) Mele Kalikimaka! The Hui’s highly anticipated holiday shopping event returns with a winter wonderland of local and handmade items for everyone on your list! During this magical Hui Holidays season, the Hui gallery shop will expand and be filled to the brim with artworks in many media, including one-of-a-kind handmade gifts by Maui artists and crafters, paintings, ceramic pieces, hand blown glass ornaments, locally made beauty products, and more! By shopping local, you’ll take part in the season of giving while supporting both local artists and Hui No‘eau. This year, join us to help celebrate 40 years of wonderful creative support, volunteering, and talented wreath-making by the incredible Judy Bisgard (see page 6!) Hui Holidays First Night 2019 Wednesday, December 4 5:00 – 8:00 pm Join us for the special opening of Hui Holidays at First Night! Do your holiday shopping in style as you sip and shop to spirited music. Surrounded by the holiday décor of the dramatically decorated Kaluanui Estate, our elves will be happy to help you check off your shopping list! You’ll also be wowed by this year’s paper display created by Maui artist Taylor Binda! Abstract painter and textile artist, Taylor Binda earned her BA degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, California. After graduating, she apprenticed with painter Danuta Rothschild in Santa Monica and worked in the art department on film/TV sets. Her body of work includes abstract painting, installation artwork, and textile design. She is also teaching natural dye workshops at the Hui (see pages 6 & 12!)! Note: First Night is a 21+ event. Celebrating Judy! Born and raised on Maui, Judy Bisgard has worked in the arts for over 40 years, serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering at Hui No‘eau in nearly every capacity. Judy attended Mills College in California where she received a degree in History with a minor in Fine Arts. Judy is a painter, a printmaker, a basket maker, and so much more! Her creative inspirations are drawn from the local Maui flora. For the past 40 years, Judy has selflessly volunteered her time and creativity to keep Hui Holidays feeling festive and magical! Join us as we celebrate all her contributions to the Hui and her final year leading the holiday wreath making extravaganza! How did the holiday wreath making tradition begin at the Hui? What was it like when it first began? The holiday wreath making tradition began with a group of friends getting together, collecting greens, having a picnic in the mountains, and coming back to make wreaths for sale and decorating the house. I was a basket maker and always collecting natural materials, so I knew who had plants growing in their yards that could be donated to the Hui. There was a lot of member participation and it was at least a two-week event to gather materials and make all of the wreaths. We really needed to raise money for the Hui and a lot of that depended on the members and Board of Directors, so that’s what really inspired us. What will you miss most about leading the wreath making process? What I will miss most is that it brings people together, including those who might not normally participate in classes, and we all get a chance to create in a different way. I’ll also miss the good fun we have, the comradery, the collecting, and making things with friends. Tell us about a favorite Hui class experience…There are so many that it is hard to pick! We have had really amazing teachers at the Hui over the years. I love learning new techniques, which I usually adapt to what I want to do. In Jeff Juhlin’s encaustic classes, for example, I took what he was teaching and immediately went off and did my own thing. He was very encouraging of that. There are artists in the community who have never taken a Hui class and they have no idea what they are missing! You just don’t know the value of the classes until you participate. Do you have any other favorite Hui memories? My retrospective exhibition was a great experience. It forced me to look at all of my work and decide what was important to me and what I was trying to communicate. Helping at Art Affair and getting the idea started is another highlight. What inspires you to give to the Hui in all the many ways that you do? I really love art and I am so lucky to be able to do it. The Hui is the only visual arts school on Maui and it brings in some excellent teachers that infuse the artistic community with new ideas and techniques. The Hui has a top-quality juried exhibition that contributes to the Hawaii art climate. The Hui also has more inclusive exhibitions that encourage more involvement from the community. I love that the Hui is doing a lot more cultural programs, too—whether lauhala, kapa… We are just so lucky to have this place. It is a treasure. Every visiting teacher says we are so lucky to have this place. handmade holidays Furoshiki: Eco-Gift Wrapping & Botanical Dyeing Taylor Binda Saturday, 1 day November 23 / 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Make the holiday season greener by practicing an eco-craft borrowed from Japan! Students will botanically dye square fabric (furoshiki) used to wrap a variety of gifts of different sizes and shapes. Your beautiful wrapping becomes part of the gift and can be reused later. Participants will also have the option to dye gift tags and silk ribbon. Tuition: $35 ($57 nonmember) Supply Fee: $50 Illustrate Your Own Holiday Art Cards Julia Cost Saturday & Sunday, 2 days November 30 – December 1 / 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Students will learn to draw four festive and wintery holiday images through guided step-by-step instructions, training their eyes to understand the basic elements of shape and translate that information onto paper. Everyone will finish class with note cards, ready to send as thank you notes, or greeting cards.
