Pregnancy and Chiropractic
Chiropractic, in its simplest form, is removing interference that is
inhibiting the nervous system’s ability to communicate its message to the
rest of the body. That is the same for athletes as it is for infants. Sure,
each practitioner might be a little different and the reasons patients
come in to be adjusted might be different, but the one thing that remains
the same is the underlying principle, removing interference.
For pregnant mamas there is not much that can be done when that person
is in pain. MAYBE they take some Tylenol, stretch, or even apply heat,
but since they are in the process of developing a new human, they have
to be particularly mindful of what they consume - especially for pain, because
there is a direct effect on the baby. How can chiropractic help mamas to be?
Simple! Remove interference! There are a variety of techniques and approaches
to help, however, I have found that a technique that uses a combination of
adjusting the pelvis and spine as well as working the musculature around the
pelvis to help create more movement in those joints of complaint and seems
to be extremely helpful when it comes to pregnancy. Sciatica!!! One of the biggest
complaints during pregnancy has been shown to have significant relief during
regular chiropractic care. Most sciatica during pregnancy is not due to a disc issue
(although it can be) is from muscular spasm of the piriformis muscle. Simple release
of this muscle and accompanying muscles of the sacrotuberus ligament
Headaches are also a big factor that come into play during pregnancy. Getting the cervical
spine adjusted to ensure proper biomechanics as well as being accompanied by
adequate water intake, and proper nutrition helps limit headaches. Another common
concern from expectant mothers is chest pain. Just like in all cases, this
should not be taken lightly. Go to your Obstetrician if you are experiencing
chest pains and get an exam. In my experience chest pain shows up in
the late second trimester/early trimester due to your body releasing a
hormone called relaxin and it does just that. It relaxes all the ligaments
in the body to prepare for the birthing process. When this happens, we
tend to see the thoracic spine and the ribs get out of alignment. Rib
pain can and does mimic chest pain. A simple adjustment is just what
the doctor ordered. The round ligament has also been shown to rear
its ugly head into spasm and mimic chest pain as well. The list can
go on and on, but these are just a few common complaints that
have been successfully treated by chiropractic.
Like all injuries, pregnant or not, pain is typically the last
thing to show up and the first thing to go away. Getting regular
chiropractic care during pregnancy is key to a healthy
birth and a happy mama. So, don’t wait, start early and
enjoy the ride!
