Hometown Hero
They say lightening never strikes twice. But for local
tennis pro and prodigy Coco Gauff, it already has.
The first time was when she won a record breaking –
heartwarming - victory over Venus Williams at Wimbledon.
The second time was at her homecoming celebration at Pompey
Park. Turns out the fervor of the enthusiasm for Cocomania
shook Mother Nature into a frenzy. The rainy weather
had fans and relatives moving inside to the gymnasium.
The weather outside did not dampen the excitement for this
local tennis phenomenon, who was born in Delray Beach and has
roots that go as deep as some of the grandest trees in town.
Her grandparents Yvonne and Eddie Odom are well known
in the community and have raised the bar for good citizenship
and fellowship. Her great-grandfather, Rev. Dr. Randolph M. Lee
taught public school and was the Pastor of St. John Missionary
Baptist Church. His legacy is one of vast accomplishment and tremendous
respect in the community.
