Associative Design is a venture conceived by the
Portuguese Association of Wood and Furniture
Industries (AIMMP). Given the burgeoning interest
in and demand for design made in Portugal,
Associative Design is actively promoting Portuguese
brands and products, placing them at the center of
the most discerning and distinguished international
design markets.
It was with this ambition that the AD Challenge’17
was launched. Associative Design invited 15
national and international designers to submit
proposals for new innovative designs in furniture.
The guidelines of the challenge are firstly the use
of wood and secondly to work alongside furniture
makers in the northern region of Portugal. With
the ultimate goal being to encourage evolution in
the Portuguese design industry. The results were
showcase in an event, in the past 19th October at
Âlfandega do Porto. The launch coincideded with
the opening of Portugal Fashion.
Bridge
Desk
The challenge launched by ASSOCIATIVE DESIGN was to
design a piece that valued the use of wood. My challenge
was to create a connection between the user and his work/
hobby. This piece is an object inspired by the city of Porto
the only city in Europe with 6 bridges. The bridge is the
métaphore through which I would like to illustrate this union.
Christophe
de Sousa
Franco - Portuguese Designer,
Christophe de Sousa was born in
France in 1979. He spent part of
his childhood and adolescence
in French soil and has returned
to Portugal with his family. This
mixture of experiences allowed
a broader view of the different
cultures that serves, along with
others, as their base of influence.
He’s graduated in Industrial Design
at the Universidade Lusíada in
Oporto. Assumes himself as a
passionate about the creative
process and early learned that his
path would have to pass through
an area that would allow him to
give wings to the imagination.His
bigest ambition is to leave his mark
in the world of Design, the ability to
convey emotion through an object
is, without doubt, the force that
moves him. Obsessed with shapes
and an amazing observer he sees in
the details his greatest allies in the
pursuit of perfection!
Plug-in
Modular high-tech furniture
Plug-in is a versatile modular furniture system inspired
by the computational concept of shape grammars,
developed in the 1970s by George Stiny and James
Gips. A generative shape grammar is a design system
based on rules and steps, which allows the creation of
multiple combinations of an alphabet of pre-determined
modules. The user can customize each modular item
according to translation and rotation movements.
The multifunctional modules explore the connection
between a low-tech material (wood) and high-tech
components (Bluetooth control systems).
The aesthetics were inspired by kinetic art (Optical Art),
conferring a motion sense to the whole set.
Digitalab
DIGITALAB is an architectural office,
design studio and creative lab,
focused on both generative design
and digital fabrication. It is a young,
multidisciplinary practice led by
Ana Fonseca and Brimet Silva, that
develops projects in several fields:
product design, art installation,
interior design, architecture and
digital research. DIGITALAB is
committed to employing new
technologies in the production of
forms and spaces, exploring strategic
combinations between generative
processes (Computational design)
and digital fabrication technologies
(3D printing, CNC, laser-cutting and
robotics). Their goal is to explore the
potential of digital tools as creative
weapons to transform pixels into
atoms, and virtual processes into
physical objects and environments.
Galinha
Sideboard
The connection of Portugal to the rooster have always
been culturally intrinsic as one of the most iconic images
of our country. This piece portrays a part of our culture
in a sober and emotional object that creates interactivity
in its exterior and a certain surprise effect in the interior.
Like chickens, this piece of furniture rests on its eggs.
In the beginning we were just
one more architecture office that
enjoyed integrating design furniture
into our architecture projects. In
this process, we were delighted by
the furniture design as a practice.
Meanwhile the contact with the art
of woodworking, led us to realize
that art is disappearing and should
be preserved. So we decided to
go further, creating a brand based
on strong ideas, new concepts,
originality and at the same time that
explores the traditional techniques
of Portuguese carpentry in order
to perpetuate it. In the process of
manufacturing, our modern creativity
is then interlaced with the most
precise and traditional woodworking
techniques. Our furniture is
handmade by craftsmen in a small
centennial factory, one of the few
remaining places where time serves
quality and attention to detail. The
final outcome is a multidisciplinary
product that is 100% portuguese,
exuding modernity and tradition.
The good name of Portuguese
Design lives in each object, with
each telling a story of beauty and
passion, ojectively recognising
and registering the work of it’s
course. The concepts of fluidity
and simplicity are explored in
juxtaposition with fibres and resins,
in its unlimited functionality. To
observe what it is produced, is
a charm win over. To share and
contribute with others is a ‘Moto’
of inspiration. The conincidence
between the Design and the
work despondancy, became
an opportunity for new project
constructions. Ultimatly ‘That Place’
is a story of love between two
creative beings, the improbable
combination between a mind of a
Desinger and of an Engenier, has
born in Porto a passion Design
