Plaza Filipino w<strong>as</strong> formed<br />

on June 2003 <strong>and</strong> launched<br />

<strong>to</strong> the public on 8 August<br />

2003 with 55 founding members.<br />

It w<strong>as</strong> registered with the Office<br />

of Fair Trading <strong>as</strong> a non-profit<br />

organisation on 10 November<br />

2003 <strong>and</strong> its main purpose is <strong>to</strong><br />

build a Filipino Social <strong>and</strong> Cultural<br />

Centre in Metropolitan Sydney.<br />

Plaza Filipino’s Vision <strong>and</strong> Mission Statements summarises the <strong>as</strong>pirations this organisation hopes <strong>to</strong> bring <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Filipino community in Australia. A list of charitable purposes that best describe Plaza<br />

Filipino include: raising the public awareness of the Filipino culture <strong>and</strong> heritage;<br />

highlighting <strong>and</strong> nurturing Filipino talent in matters of the arts, music, literature <strong>and</strong><br />

craftsmanship; providing world-cl<strong>as</strong>s<br />

facilities for their practice; <strong>and</strong> promoting<br />

Philippine sport <strong>and</strong> recreation.<br />

Happy 16th Anniversary, Plaza Filipino!<br />

Among the many projects successfully<br />

initiated by Plaza Filipino are:<br />

Plaza Filipino made its gr<strong>and</strong> appearance<br />

at the Sydney Olympic Park Homebush,<br />

NSW on 18 September 2004 with its first<br />

Fiesta Extravaganza. The opening act<br />

featured the “Pamba<strong>to</strong> B<strong>and</strong>”, a rondalla<br />

group of young Filipino Australians elegantly dressed in Barong Tagalog<br />

<strong>and</strong> led by Jun Javier. The fiesta w<strong>as</strong> the culmination of the search for<br />

the Filipino Australian Idol, M<strong>as</strong>ter <strong>and</strong> Miss Tiny Tots <strong>and</strong> the Teen<br />

Models,<br />

Australia.<br />

A fete of<br />

sumptuous<br />

f o o d s ,<br />

children games <strong>and</strong> parade of cultural dress among<br />

participants <strong>and</strong> guests were held on the day. The evening<br />

w<strong>as</strong> capped with the glitzy “Night of a Thous<strong>and</strong> Stars”,<br />

song <strong>and</strong> dance event with Roanne Monte (Miss Saigon<br />

London) <strong>as</strong> guest artist.<br />

Plaza Filipino launched the Mrs. Philippines-Australia<br />

Pageant acknowledging women <strong>and</strong> the great role they<br />

make in moulding the future of the Filipina woman in<br />

Australia. The Mrs. Philippines-Australia showc<strong>as</strong>ed the beauty <strong>and</strong> grace that are the remarkable traits of Filipino<br />

wives <strong>and</strong> mothers. The caring <strong>and</strong> loving character of the Filipina is the hallmark that made<br />

these occ<strong>as</strong>ions very special. They were formidable <strong>and</strong> determined partners in our cause.<br />

Bingo Social in July! This social game is <strong>as</strong> important <strong>as</strong> the players themselves, for each<br />

anniversary our loyal<br />

members <strong>and</strong> supporters<br />

come <strong>and</strong> join us <strong>to</strong> celebrate<br />

our small vic<strong>to</strong>ries, <strong>and</strong> above<br />

all <strong>to</strong> renew friendships.<br />

The need <strong>to</strong> feel the same particular habits, values,<br />

rituals <strong>and</strong> ceremonies ensured the early Filipinos a place<br />

in the culture in which they were born.<br />
