Before the birth of women role
models who stepped up to
make a name in their
respective industries, women
were inferior to men. These
days, many women are raising
the flags of feminism,
showing the world that they
can do better or at least could
also do what men can.
Women Scarcity in
Renewables
However, despite the
number of females who
became successful in various
fields in science, technology,
and engineering, the
involvement of women in the
renewable industry remains
scarce.
Because of this, the lack of
diversity in the sector is
apparent as men continue to
populate companies- failing to
see what they are amiss.
Since the renewable industry
is new, leaders could easily
overlook the benefits women
can bring to their company.
Female Leaders Can Be
Better
Men are experts in terms of
knowledge and technical
skills, but women are actually
great in these fields too. In
fact, they can even be better.
Having women in the
business will not only allow
them to showcase their skills,
The Renewable Energy
but this will also lead to the
conception of new ideas.
Diversity in the Green Energy
Industry
Diversity will break the
homogeneous thinking of a
group helping to come up with
better decisions and
innovations. As years pass,
more and more people
recognize the value of solar
panels, wind energy, and
others.
Hiring women in the renewable
industry can fill the skills gap,
knowing that this is currently in
demand as more people
advocate to help the
environment.
Female Role Models in
Clean Energy
Given that women’s concern
about global warming and
Diversity
nature is more profound, they
will be more effective in
pushing new regulations and
innovations in the sector.
Hopefully, with more women
role models, the leaders of the
renewable industry will finally
open their eyes and recognize
the value of the female
population.
When this happens, it will not
only allow women to get jobs
in the renewables sector, but
it will also give them a voice.
This will open opportunities for
women to provide better
solutions that will benefit not
just the present generation but
for the future generations as
well.
The renewable energy sector
has failed to acknowledge the
advantages that women can
bring to the industry. Because
of that, there is a lack of
diversity in renewable
energy companies. Women
still belong to the minority
groups and their voices are
seldom heard as men continue
to dominate over them.
The International Renewable
Energy Agency reports that
the global renewable
energy employment
(excluding large-scale
hydropower) has reached 8.3
million in 2016. But despite
this increase, women repre-
C O V E R S T O R Y
sentation is still small. In
countries under the
Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and
Development (OECD), only 20
percent of the employees are
females who work in sales and
administration, engineering,
and technical departments.
The poor gender diversity in
the industry results in a slow
transition and it hinders new
ideas that women could
contribute. Compared to other
industries, the energy sector is
lagging in terms of
diversity which affects the way
the business runs. Because
of this, groups like Women in
Renewable Energy (WiRE) are
looking for ways to advance
the role and recognition of
women in the sector. This will
help improve the industry as
females navigate change with
new technologies, innovations,
and ideas.
C O V E R S T O R Y
Does Diversity
Really Matter?
The first step that companies
need to take is to assess how
they can truly benefit from
women employees. Once
more females are added to
the team, it can create a more
diverse workplace. Apart from
women, minority ethnic groups
including Asians and black
people should be given roles
contributing to the sector’s
diversity. Is this really
necessary?
Working with a group
comprised of like-minded
individuals will result into
homogenous thinking. This
means that there will be a
limited perspective which
hinders the creation of fresh
ideas. Hence, in order for a
group to be effective, there
should be brainstorming with
different points of view from
people with different
experiences and backgrounds
based on their gender, age,
and culture.
Having a good balance
between the number of male
and female workers will help
create a bigger picture when
dealing with issues and other
business-related matters. For
instance, males and females
has varying approach to risks.
Females are more careful and
cautious. With this, their inputs
about how to manage health
and safety in construction sites
would be beneficial.
Surrounding the industry with
different people or with a
diverse group will welcome
more ideas and perspectives,
making industry leaders more
cognizant and receptive to
other viewpoints.
Why We Need More
Women in the
Energy Sector
The renewable energy sector
is still relatively new which
explains why there is a
current lack of diversity. This
also mean that it could open
its doors to more female
engineers since it still needs
more time to fully develop.
Currently, there is an
increasing global demand for
energy but it is struggling due
to skills shortages.
However, this dilemma can be
resolved if more women could
be part of the business.
Women can close the skills
gap which will help
companies keep pace with
the demands of the world. The
skills of females are different
from men as they have a slight
edge when it comes to project
management, negotiation, and
diplomacy. They also have the
knowledge that men possess
from technical know-hows like
installing solar panels to
subject theories like how a
wind turbine works.
But the greatest advantage
of hiring women is their
sympathetic nature towards
the state of the environment
and climate change. This
means that they can
incorporate new ideas and
innovations that can help
the industry tackle climate
change. Since females are
more concerned of this
aspect, their strong
pro-climate beliefs and
opinions can be prominent
voices to call for greater
action.
Women can
close the skills
gap which will
help companies
keep pace with
the demands of
the world
C O V E R S T O R Y
The change can start in STEM
education in students.
Ambassadors and role models
can also encourage students
to work on this field. Role
models can also help increase
female visibility in the industry.
This way, it would be easier
to gain trust not just from the
society but from the male
leaders.
Gender diversity in companies
can produce better
innovation. It is also easier to
tackle the best approaches in
policy based on a variety of
perspectives. Since women
lend a unique perspective on
effective solutions for
sustainability, the birth of new
ideas and programs in the
sector can lead to its progress.
Now that we realize the value
of diversity and the availability
of a range of skills, it is time to
make a change. The
renewable energy industry
needs to open more
opportunities for women.
operators, and GE Renewable
Energy’s Grid Solutions business,
one of the leaders in advanced
power system solutions, have
announced today their global
collaboration of tailored offerings
and extensive expertise to better
serve the critical infrastructure
industry. This combination of
products and services will
provide customers with a more
robust, end-to-end solution for
their networking needs while
allowing both parties to extend
their already substantial industry
footprints.
Utilities traditionally have
managed their IT and OT
networks as separate
sub-networks. Over the years,
however, various challenges
required utilities to rethink their
Information and
Communication Technology
(ICT). Creating heterogeneous
networks that can harmonize and
streamline previously siloed IT
factor for improving grid
efficiency, reducing downtime,
lowering operational costs,
minimizing asset risks, and
while preserving the security
and dependability of critical and
time-sensitive operation traffic
with information assurance edge
even better equipped to address
the networking needs of
utilities around the globe,
especially those organizations
that are building or modernizing
The joint ECI and GE offering
will provide customers with an
end-to-end, unified networking
solution for whichever
technology they require: optical,
MPLS-TP or IP/MPLS, or TDM.
Through this collaboration, GE
can scale its solutions with ECI’s
Apollo optical family or
Neptune family with Elastic
MPLS, which supports both
MPLS-TP and IP/MPLS on the
same network element. As part
of a joint solution, ECI also will
offer GE’s JunglePAX MPLS-TP
solution to its global customers
to address areas of critical
communications requiring
industrial hardened, fanless
and optimized packet transport
modes to critical OT application
performance. Interoperability
between the two product lines is
already under way, with future
differentiation planned.
Moreover, customers will be able
to combine ECI and GE
maintenance agreements under
one entity for first line support.
“The rise of ICT modernization
and IT/OT convergence means
more companies are seeking out
believe this recent partnership
with GE will allow us to work
with a wide range of utility
customers in new geographies.
This is an exciting time for ECI
and GE as we partner to bring
commented at the gathering:
“The consequence of unmanaged
risk is clear. In 2018, there was
USD 160 billion of loss from
natural hazard, USD 80 billion
of which was not insured. The
impact of this loss on lives and
Denis Duverne, IDF Chairman
and Chairman of the Board of
AXA, stated: “The insurance
The IDF Day also focused on
Advanced Stadium Cooling: Innovative
Technology Coming to the Qatar World Cup
Every stadium has it’s own unique form and structure
The 2018 World Cup marked the World Cup debut
of using the Video Assistant Referee, also known as
VAR, as the newest technological innovation
coming to the stadiums. According to FIFA, the
VAR system had a success rate of 99.3 percent and
many football analysts have praised the
introduction of VAR. In their opinion, the World
Cup was a perfect example of how technology can
work well for football, although it did show that
there are some risks involved in relying on the
technology.
In 2022, when the World Cup will be played in
Qatar, a newer and bigger technical innovation will
come to the stadiums. All host stadiums will be
air-conditioned, making it doable to organize the
World Cup in a country with extreme heats. Since
Qatar was announced as the competition’s host in
December 2010, many have been critical of the
controversial choice wondering how an event like
the World Cup could be organized in the desert.
In only one generation, Qatar has transformed
from a handful of poor fishing villages into the
richest country per capita in the world. It turns out
if you combine gas revenues with foreign labor and
the firm hand of the ruling monarchy, a country
can be transformed rather quickly. Now, Qatar is
taking on one of the biggest sports events the world
has to offer.
Because of the extreme heat, revolutionary
cooling technology is going to be used at the 2022
World Cup in Qatar after tests proved everything
is working as it should at the proposed World Cup
stadiums. The development is an important step in
the build-up to the tournament, which has
courted controversy since Qatar was announced as
the competition’s host.
The 2022 tournament is therefore being held in
winter for the first time, to avoid the searing
summer heat. With temperatures averaging 42
degrees Celsius in summer, the decision was made
to move the dates of the World Cup to winter, when
temperatures around 30 degrees are to be expected.
This is the reason why the stadiums will have
air-conditioning installed, in order to bring down
the temperature to about 20 degrees on the pitch
and 23 degrees in the stands. The innovation being
trialed in Qatar involves a system where cold air
is being pumped into stadiums through a system
powered by chilled water, which is the transformed
into a cold mist after passing through cooling
nozzles.
They way it works is that the platform of the
stadium is used to defend it against the infiltration
of warm wind. This means the stadium is a barrier
that is basically containing a cold bubble inside.
The technology works by maintaining the cold
bubble for as long as necessary in order for people
to watch the game, and so the players are
comfortable enough to play their game.
The Al Wakrah Stadium also has a roof that can
be opened and a seating-bowl cooling system to
allow football to be played all-year round. At Al
Wakrah Stadium, they are using an air circulation
technique, which means some of the air is drawn
back, cooled again and then pushed back to the
supporters and players. The cooling technology for
the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has been a crucial
part since the country announced its bid for the
tournament in 2009.
Every stadium has it’s own unique form and
structure. For example, the Khalifa International
Stadium is a big stadium with an athletics track
which makes it so an unconventional treatment is
needed. At Khalifa, fresh air is taken and pushed
to the people. Moreover, a new line of under-seat
diffusers has been developed in order to deliver the
air to fans in a gentle manner.
No doubt, Qatar wants to show itself to the world,
building the most advanced stadiums that ever
have been built. The stadiums are also built so close
to each other, fans could actually attend more than
one game per day. The longest distance between
two venues is just 55km, a short journey that will
be seamless thanks to an advanced underground
railway system.
12V Waterproof Actuator
One of the distinctive advantages of the waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their simple design
Electric linear actuators are the mechanisms,
the core task of which is the transfer of force
from the control device to the executive one.
Linear actuators vary in the way they transfer
their energy. At the same time, the object
controlled can be driven by a rotational or
linear motion action.
One of the distinctive advantages of the
waterproof linear actuators is undoubtedly their
simple design. Due to this, actuators have an
impressively long-lasting life service, in
addition, they do not require regular
maintenance and are unpretentious to the
conditions. Simple execution allows using
devices even in unfavorable climatic
conditions. Depending on the manufacturer,
models may have additional protection that
increases the resistance of the product to
disadvantageous factors.
Waterproof electric linear actuators of Progressive
Automations manufacturer can be used for
the various types of sea works. This can be a
shipbuilding industry where this
technology may come in handy for the
construction of automated boat hatches that
can prevent lover sections of a ship from
flooding during powerful sea storms. This
technology also can be implemented for the
construction of complicated inner mechanisms
of military submarines where they can be
responsible for the pressure control which is
essential for the submarines’ operability. There
are three basic types of water protection:
• IP54 – provides protection against water
splashes penetration from all sides;
• IP65 – prevents the penetration of water flows
inside the case at any possible angle;
• IP67 – with such protection the device is
capable to function when fully submerged
under the water.
For example, PA-06 linear actuator model of
Progressive Automations has the IP67 water
protection meaning that this device is really
capable to function even when fully submerged
into the water and even when being at a
significant depth. The minimum technical
specifications of such waterproof electric linear
actuator are the following: stroke – 2 inches,
force – 22 Ibs, speed – 1.38 inches/sec,
whereas the maximum technical specifications
are like this: stroke – 24 inches, force – 180 Ibs,
speed – 0.47 inches/sec.
Customers can choose technical
specifications so that they could adjust their
waterproof linear actuators according to the
needs of performance wanted. The PA-06
electric linear actuator of Progressive
Automations is capable of working under the
harshest conditions and withstand water, and
other potentially unwanted liquids, however for
short periods of time.
This high-rated quality makes this kind of
electric linear actuators to be the most popular
choice for marine engineering. Such actuators
are capable to work within -20 to +60 °C
temperature window. The warranty covering
this electric actuator lasts for 18 months since
the purchase. This linear actuator is mounted
with the help of BRK-06 mounting brackets that
make the installation process extremely easy.
Furthermore, this kind of electric actuators is
compatible with a whole range of control
systems and control boxes transforming the
operation process into a pleasure. Control
boxes allow installing electric linear actuators
of high water protection merely everywhere if
dimensions are suitable for their installation.
Actuators of Progressive Automations
all-the-time provide the most effective
performance while at the same time they are
always reliable. These actuators can easily
undergo the most terrific weather conditions
and prove themselves to be the best solution
where other alike technologies feel themselves
uncomfortable and present poor performance.
During long-lasting periods of work under
heavy workloads such actuators of
Progressive Automations show the highest
resistance towards harsh environment
conditions. Such type of electric linear
actuators can be easily adjusted for various
types of work more or less associated with
serious humidity and marine implementation.
Preferring the waterproof actuators of
Progressive Automations customers make their
investment into the qualitative and long-lasting
technology that will fully justify their
expectations.
It doesn’t mean that you should
hire a designer or create a
lavishing space.
Focus on little things like proper
furniture, lightning, and
equipment also create a huge
difference. The key is to create a
work environment which fosters
new ideas, creativity, and where
employees don’t feel depressed
and bound.
wrong if you think that a messy
office symbolizes that you are too
busy creating great ideas. Don’t
get inspired by Einstein’s messy
environment hinders creativity
rather than fostering it.
Just imagine how you will feel
if you enter a space where spare
chairs are rolling on the floor,
cartons are piled up in a corner,
50
and dust-covered broken
printer and photocopy machine
are placed helplessly in the other
corner? Wouldn’t that be
suffocating? So, how can you
expect your employees to work in
Floor Standing Air-Conditioner is the Best
Cooling Solution in Offices and Large Homes
It may seem like a breeze, but
choosing an air conditioner is no
cakewalk. The decision to
purchase the best Air
Conditioning unit to get the
coolest, cleanest air for a
particular room is one that
requires a lot of forethought. This
decision rests on hitting the mark
with many factors, such as room
size, ease of use, amount of
energy saved, appearance, and
much, much more. Needless to
say, research, as with all major
purchase decisions in life, is
paramount before the inevitable
purchase.
For owners of sizeable homes and
offices, the floor standing air
conditioner is a typical frontrunner.
When situated in the
right place, floor standing AC
units stand out among its
competitors and counterparts.
With that being said, here is a
snackable list of four benefits to
remember when investing in a
floor standing air conditioner
1. You are free to cool
whatever room you want
Central air conditioning units are
the go-to products for holistic,
facility-wide cooling.
However, people tend to feel
different levels of comfort when
faced with different temperatures.
Nowadays, individuals crave a
certain level of control in their
homes and offices. Some want to
snuggle together and watch
movies in a cold room, while
some want to turn up the heat
when having their workout. Thus,
the floor standing units are the
best option for effortlessly
adjusting the temperatures to
appease the needs of different
individuals.
2. Getting to it is a breeze
Ease of use is everything in this
day and age. While some may
argue that having a remote
control for a wall-mounted AC is
easy (and it is), these units are
oftentimes embedded in
hard-to-reach places that may
prove difficult when turning it on
or off. In contrast, floor standing
air conditioners are perhaps one
of the least difficult AC units to
reach and access, being situated
in the corners of various rooms.
If one feels hot or cold, they only
need to walk up to the unit and
turn it on or off as needed.
3. It can be installed and
moved anywhere
Floor standing air conditioners
are highly mobile units. They are
capable of being installed and
moved in any of the facility’s
rooms, offering a wide range of
customizability when choosing
which room in the house or

office to cool. All this type of AC
unit needs for instalment is a flat
surface, as not all every wall is
suitable for a wall-mounted air
conditioner. Not only are they
easy to install, floor standing air
conditioners can also be moved
anywhere should the facility
owners decide to place the unit in
another room.
4. It cools rooms faster
The higher an air conditioner is
installed, the more time it takes
for a room to be cooled. This
is apparent with wall-mounted
units which are, more often than
not, situated in higher parts of
the room. Since the installation
level of a floor standing aircon
is lower than its wall-mounted
counterpart, these floor standing
units cool the room quicker. This
is especially handy after one gets
back home after a hot, lengthy
commute.
For larger homes and workplaces,
as well as facilities that revolve
around convenience, the floor
standing air conditioning unit is
a definite choice.
However, one of the main
critiques against floor standing
units are their space-consuming
bulk and uninvitingly
industrial design. Luckily, the
online activation. A 140° wide
