The English department follows the AQA Specifications for English Literature
(8702) and English Language (8700). Both qualifications are assessed by written
examination and there are 2 papers for each: 4 examinations in total.
When are the exams and what questions will be on them?
Paper 1: Shakespeare and 19 th century novel (13th May am / 1 hr 45 mins)
• There is one question on Much Ado About Nothing and one question on A
Christmas Carol.
• These are equally weighted and overall the exam is 40% of the final grade.
• Both are extract based so the students have to write about how language has
been used in the extract and then talk about the play or novel as a whole.
Paper 2: Inspector Calls and poetry (21st May am / 2 hr 15 mins)
• There are 3 questions: one on ‘An Inspector Calls’ and two on poetry. One
poetry question is a comparison of a poem that is printed as part of the
question paper with another poem chosen from the collection students have
studied (not printed!); with an analysis of an unseen poem in the final
question and a short comparison with another unseen poem.
• These are equally weighted and overall this exam is 60% of the final grade.
• There is no extract for Inspector Calls and only one poem given for the
comparison. But this shouldn’t cause students to be alarmed.

There is a Writing Section and this is a choice of a descriptive or narrative writing (24
marks for content, 16 marks for technical accuracy). 50% of the final grade.
Paper 2: Writers’ viewpoints Paper 2 (5 th June am / 1 hr 45 mins )
There is a Reading Section based on 2 non-fiction texts – one of which is pre-nineteenth
century - (80 marks) and this is comprised of:
• A true / false (4 marks)
• A summary question (8 marks)
• A language question (12 marks)
• Students will sit three exams.
• Two will require a calculator.
• Practise at home is vital, with and without a
calculator.
• Students are going to make mistakes as
frequently as they get things correct. This is
normal.
• Your support and motivation could be key in
maintaining a high work ethic throughout the
year.

• The best way to learn Mathematics is by doing
Mathematics.

my child in science?
1. Making sense of what the
question is asking.
2. Remembering all the equations.
3. Remembering units for different
quantities.
4. Remembering keywords and
definitions.
5. Recalling the practical activities
they could be tested on.
6. Revisiting content from a long
time ago!
How can they overcome these
challenges?
1. Understand the meaning of
command words.
2. Practise lots of questions.
3. Use past/specimen papers and
self-assess.
4. Know what is on each paper by
use the topic checklist alongside
topic mind maps.
5. Revise in bite size chunks – little
and often is the best.
6. Make flash cards and question
cards – self/peer testing.
