But Lyttelton Information Centre manager Ruth Targus said she hopes the feedback will be acted on by the new community board before the next cruise ship season begins. “Obviously everybody goes through Akaroa because they wait for a boat, whereas in Lyttelton there’s buses so they don’t. We don’t want to make it crazy we just want to make sure we’re not missing out.” SuperValue owner Rob de Thier said he is glad the conversation has started now so a good outcome can be achieved for Lyttelton by next October. Mr de Thier was the Lyttelton Harbour Business Association chairman until last week and said many other businesses are “excited” to gain momentum from more visitors. “There have been no negative conversations about it within the association,” he said. They included potential environmental issues, such as noise, pollution, stirring of sediment, fuel-use, erosion, waste and wind resistance. Other concerns include congestion, pressure on businesses, disruption to the community, a need for wi-fi, a lack of signage and stretched toilet Rob de Thier facilities,. Mrs Targus hopes the information provided will help people or groups to be delegated to roles which would help to minimise these concerns. Meanwhile, Akaroa Ratepayers and Residents Association chairman Harry Stronach said Akaroa is as “unready for this year’s cruise ship season as it was last year.” He said co-operation from the city council and other bodies involved is still lacking. “They have gone very quiet lately,” he said. Former Olympian’s new role • By Jess Gibson IN 1976, John Christensen made New Zealand proud when he helped the men’s hockey team bring home gold from the Montreal Olympics. Now the Redcliffs resident is hoping to make his community proud, as a new trustee of the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation. “I have lived in and been a part of this community all of my life, and was very John Christensen pleased to be approached to join the foundation. I am honoured to work with this group that assists and encourages such a wide range of activities,” Mr Christensen said. Mr Christensen will join Sumner resident Ken Jones, who has also been appointed as a new trustee. Mr Jones has lived in Sumner for many years and has contributed to the development of the Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club. The business consultant was the surf club president for 11 years and has been recognised with life membership. Mr Christensen and Mr Jones were appointed following the death of New Zealand Order of Merit member David Cox and the retirement of long-standing trustee John Brown. Founded 26 years ago, the foundation has been the beneficiary of many donations and bequests by residents who have wanted to leave their mark on the community. Trustee Jim Keegan said the commercial and administration skills of Mr Christensen and Mr Jones, along with their long and close association with their communities, will make them “very valuable” to the foundation. •Donations to the foundation can be put towards remembrances, such as a seat, a shelter or a drinking fountain. Email your views to jess.gibson@starmedia.kiwi Feedback to be sought over Akaroa’s wastewater options AKAROA residents will soon have their say on how the town’s wastewater is treated. Three options are being prepared by the city council for consultation before the end of this year. Akaroa’s treated wastewater is currently discharged into the harbour, but the city council has made a commitment to explore alternatives. Three waters and waste acting head John Moore said city council staff have investigated a range of methods suggested by the community. “These included irrigation to land, an ocean outfall, piping the wastewater elsewhere, deep-bore injection and managed aquifer recharge,” he said. “It’s time now to bring investigations to a close and consult the community on the most effective options available. “We hope to share these options with everyone in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula after the elections so that the new TARGET: Options are being explored to replace the need to discharge treated wastewater into Akaroa Harbour. city council can make a decision early in 2020,” he said. It was suggested that highly-treated wastewater could be fed into Akaroa’s aquifers, or groundwater, as an alternative to the harbour discharge.
