transporting enslaved Africans,<br />
that was bound for Mexico<br />
when it was attacked by the<br />
White Lion and another privateer,<br />
the Treasurer, and forced<br />
to surrender its African prisoners.<br />

Slave trade, was already well<br />
under way in the Caribbean<br />

The captain of the White Lion, John<br />
Jope, traded the captives to Virginians<br />
in return for food and supplies. They<br />
were taken into servitude in nearby<br />
homes and plantations, their skills as<br />
farmers in the daily struggle to survive.<br />
