Annual school fair afun day<br />
Woodend School has had a<br />
busy term, culminating in its<br />
annual school fair earlier this<br />
month.<br />
Pupils, staff, parents and the<br />
wider community came<br />
together for afun community<br />
event.<br />
The weather even played its<br />
part.<br />
The Woodend Lions Club<br />
sponsored the talent show<br />
Stars in their Eyes,which was a<br />
highlight of the day.<br />
Other activities this term<br />
have included the Year 12<br />
team studying and<br />
experimenting with flight,<br />
which finished with avisit to<br />
the Wigram Air Force<br />
Museum.<br />
This week the Year 34<br />
students had aday of learning<br />
outdoors, which involved<br />
treasure hunts and<br />
appreciating nature, with all<br />
learning programmes outside.<br />
Skiing at Porter Heights,<br />
Jump Jam, Koru games and<br />
winter tournament have all<br />
been part of the school’s<br />
activities for senior pupils this<br />
term.<br />
Earlier this month the<br />
school’s junior and senior kapa<br />
haka groups were involved in<br />
the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Cultural<br />
Festival, while the whole<br />
school is practising for the<br />
production of The Legend of the<br />
Quill,which will be held in the<br />
Rangiora Town Hall next term,<br />
on November 12 to 13.<br />
Next term, Year 56 pupils<br />
will be heading to Living<br />
Springs for school camp to<br />
enjoy some fun, forge friendships<br />
and try out many new<br />
experiences and activities.<br />

Firefighters rapt<br />
with third placing<br />

place at arecentnational<br />
competition.<br />
The brigade of just 18<br />
members sent ateam of<br />
five to competeinthe<br />
UnitedFire Brigades<br />
national driver’s<br />
competitionatMansfield<br />
Park,Feilding.<br />
Waikuku Beach, up<br />
against more than 100<br />
competitorsand 18 teams<br />
from around the country,<br />
placedthirdinthe team’s<br />
event.<br />
‘‘We did welland when<br />
we had our name called<br />
out we were pretty<br />
chuffed,’’ team member<br />
Brett Reed says.<br />
‘‘A couple of our guys<br />
drive spreader trucks full<br />
time and we have a<br />
tractor driver, so they’re<br />
just reallysharpand<br />
obviouslynailed it on the<br />
day.’’<br />
Acouple had done it<br />
before, he added.<br />
Brett says the 18<br />
members are amix of<br />
frontline firefighters and<br />
supporters, with fire<br />
chief Jim Gardner<br />
recently completing 25<br />
years of service with the<br />
local force, which also<br />
turns 25 this month.<br />
‘‘We’ve got abit of bling<br />
in our stationwith afew<br />
trophies and we are<br />
always lookingtorecruit.<br />
‘‘Waikuku Beachis<br />
only asmall township,<br />
but it gets busy over the<br />
summer holidays,soit’s a<br />
pretty big commitment,<br />
but it’s well worth it.’’<br />
Firefightersreceive<br />
regular trainingand<br />
learnvaluable skills<br />
whichcan be used in the<br />
workforce, as well as<br />
serving the community.<br />
‘‘These days you’ve got<br />
to have the unit<br />
standards completed<br />
before you can do<br />
anything, including<br />
driving,’’ Brett says.<br />
‘‘Youcan’t justget<br />
anyone behindthe wheel<br />
of afire appliance. I’ve<br />
been driving for years,<br />
but you’veconstantly got<br />
to look out for other<br />
drivers on the road<br />
because they may not<br />
hear you or get<br />
distracted.<br />
‘‘You’ve got acrew on<br />
boardand you’vegot to<br />
get that crew backhome<br />
safely.’’<br />
He says the fire force<br />
worksclosely with<br />
neighbouring brigades in<br />
Woodend and Rangiora<br />
and supports firefighters<br />
further afield.<br />
The biggestassignment<br />
in recentyearswas<br />
assisting withthe<br />
response to the Port Hills<br />
fire two years ago.<br />
