This tale ofinner-beauty takes us back in time to meet<br />
Fidel, the carefree and light-hearted Swallow.<br />
Having been foolish enough to fall in love with ariver<br />
reed, Fidel has missed the chance to migrate south for<br />
the winter, so he takes shelter in the shadow ofthe<br />
beautiful, jewel-encrusted statue of the Happy Prince.<br />
Fidel discovers that the Prince is anything but happy.<br />
After living his life inignorance ofthe poverty around<br />
him, the statue can now see every bad thing that takes<br />
place inhis city. Hetells Fidel some ofthe tragic stories<br />
he can see below him. Fidel reluctantly agrees to<br />
assist the Prince, by stripping him of his fine gold and<br />
jewels in order to take them tothose in great need.<br />
Happily these gifts make a great difference to the<br />
town, restoring hope and prosperity, but in the process<br />
Fidel succumbs to the cold of the winter.<br />
Thankfully the story does not end there, as the now<br />
ugly Prince and the frozen Fidel are restored tolife by<br />
the wish of ayoung girl, and everyone lives happily<br />
ever after.<br />
The Happy Prince isbrought tolife bythe acting, singing<br />
and dancing of over 100 students aged 4-11yrs<br />
from the Junior Department ofHartley School of Performing<br />
Arts.<br />
