Odyssey Co-Op Gallery welcomes potter
Rosa Friedrichs
BY HOLLY DE SAILLAN • RIVER ARTS DISTRICT, ASHEVILLE
Odyssey Co-Op Gallery
welcomes their newest
member, Rosa Friedrichs.
Her work has been juried
to join our co-op gallery
of 25 ceramic artists.
Rosa Friedrichs carves into her white
clay forms through a layer of contrasting
underglaze, thus revealing the white
clay underneath; creating a bright visual
contrast.
Much of Friedrichs’s
decorated ceramic creations
are inspired by nature
and her potent childhood
memories, which
she artistically brings to life
through her keen sense of
observation and detail.
Friedrichs often creates
her playful imagery using a
ceramic technique called
sgraffito, which is reminiscent
of relief printing. She carves into her white clay
forms through
a layer of
contrasting
underglaze,
thus revealing
the white clay
underneath;
creating a
bright visual
contrast.
Beets encircling
a bowl,
platter or cup,
arms embracing
a dog,
figs, sunnyside-up
eggs
or tall irises
are some of the designs that Friedrichs incises
into her functional wheel-thrown work. Her highly
detailed figurative imagery is as enchanting as it
is skillfully rendered.
She earned her BFA in
Ceramics from Earlham College,
Richmond, Indiana. She
participates in area workshops
and classes, such as recently
at Penland School of Craft.
Rosa also had a short apprenticeship
with nationally known
Asheville ceramic artist, Karen
Newgard.
Friedrichs greatly values her
life as an artist. She feels that
an essential part of balancing
that life is the importance of
giving back to the community.
As part of the LGBTQ community,
she contributes to
Youth OutRight and Tranzmissions,
two organizations that work to empower
and support LGBTQ people.
