FINE ART Living the Dream in WNC—Jewelry by Noël Yovovich BY STAFF REPORTS • RIVER ARTS DISTRICT, ASHEVILLE “Inside Outside” bracelet by Noël Yovovich A lifelong flatlander until two years ago, Noël Yovovich has been putting mountains in her work for many years, calling them “Imaginary Landscapes — Places in the Heart that are not available in the here and now.” No more. The landscapes with mountains are as pervasive as ever. It’s the here and now that have changed. Now, here in Asheville, her heart has finally matched its interior places with the outer environment. Yovovich’s unique jewelry pieces feature intricate saw-pierced silver overlaid on landscapes created through the magic of anodized titanium. “Thirty years ago or so, a colleague gave me a five-minute demo of how to color titanium using heat or voltage. The color appears on the metal like magic! It knocked me out. I’ve been working with it ever since.” “Western North Carolina is the beauty I’ve been dreaming of,” says Yovovich, “and the River Arts District is the art scene I’ve been looking for.” Born in rural Florida in an area popular as an over-wintering spot for traveling carny performers, she moved to Chicago for college, fell in love, raised four kids, then recently finally felt free to choose where in the US to live and work. What happens to an artist’s inspiration when they get what they’ve been longing for? As it turns out, what happens is more productivity than ever. “I’ve never worked harder, or been happier, in my whole life,” says Yovovich. She can be found most days in her studio/retail space behind a sign on the counter that reads, “Please interrupt me!” “Yes, I’m working at my bench, making the jewelry that goes in my cases, but I love to meet visitors and talk with them. So stop by and say hello, check out my work, hold it in your hand, try it on. I like to tell people ‘Ogling and fondling, no charge’. I am grateful to be back in the River Arts District among so many professional artists and doing what I love.
