PAGE 6 Wednesday October 2 2019 BAY HARBOUR Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz News Youths aim to create a healthy river YOUNG PEOPLE from schools and early learning centres are being asked to take action to create a healthy Heathcote River. The pilot project is a collaborative community approach to conservation education which aims to connect students along the river. City council parks programmes and partnerships manager Kate Russell said the project aims to establish a blueprint for student action to power environmental change within the river. “We are looking to these young people as the protectors of their local river environment and hope to expand this approach further afield,” Ms Russell said. Supported by city council education co-ordinator Sally Airey, the project encourages young people to take “guardianship” of the river. “We are inviting young people to lead community action to help create a healthy awa [river]. Ms Airey, whose role is being funded by the Department of Conservation, said the initial project title – Healthy Ōpāwaho – expresses the “connection between a healthy river and a healthy community.” Dig out your historic photos for competition GIVEN TIME, even the most ordinary photo can be an extraordinary window into a different world. This photo, picturing the intersection of High, Hereford and Colombo Sts, was a highly commended entry in Christchurch City Libraries’ 2008 photo hunt. It was submitted by Tony Bowie and shows his mother and grandmother on their way to shop in High St in the late 1950s. During the 1950s, the central city was the prime destination for shopping in Christchurch, and women would don hats and gloves for their trip into town. The central city enjoyed this shopping heyday in the first half of the 20th-century, coinciding with the peak of reliance on public transport – first trams, then buses. Cathedral Square was the central hub of the city’s transport network, which connected the suburbs to the city centre. It was customary for people to go into town to shop, and to “take tea” in the tea rooms of the major department stores located on both sides of Cathedral Square. Beca Christchurch Heritage Festival 2019 starts on October 7 and this year, as part of the festival, Christchurch City Libraries is celebrating 10 years of the Christchurch photo hunt. Over the past decade, the photo hunt has collected hundreds of great photos like this one, and Christchurch City Libraries hopes people will dust off their collections and unearth some more treasures. This year’s competition runs until October 31. Entrants, including elite competitors from across New Zealand and overseas, will take part in a variety of courses on October 13. The 53km race starts at Diamond Harbour and heads up Mt Herbert before descending through the Packhorse Hut and across private farmland. Competitors will then run through the Christchurch Adventure Park and Crater Rim trail to finish in Hansen Park, Opawa. The race doubles as the Athletics New Zealand and Oceania trail running championships. Last year, runners came from 12 countries. The 30km, 22km, and 10km events all run on the Crater Rim trail, with the 30km also crossing private farmland. Among the top entrants in the 53km race are Vajin Armstrong, who recently returned from racing in Africa and America, last year’s podium finisher Otto Schumacher, and Hayden Zervos, winner of last year’s 30km race. HARD YARDS: Competitors from New Zealand and overseas can take part in either a 53km, 30km, 22km, or 10km race at the Crater Rim Ultra event. The women’s field includes Rose Pearson and Nory Lansing, both top-five place-getters last year, and Mel Aitken, who competed for New Zealand in the world trail running championships in Portugal this year. Race director Jamie Hawker said the event, organised by the Port Hills Athletic Club, welcomes everyone from the weekend warrior to elites from New Zealand, Australia and around the Pacific. “Every race has a tail-end Charlie so no one is ever on their own and there will be close on 100 marshals to help guide runners safely out over the four courses. “Our sponsors are local businesses, and our volunteers are individuals and groups such as Odyssey House and Achilles NZ, a running and walking group set up by the Blind Foundation, as well as our loyal club members.” Mr Hawker said the Port Hills are suited to offroad racing and are a big reason for the increasing popularity of the Crater Rim Ultra. “We have a unique event that embraces local trails and gets participants feeling a million miles away in nature above our city, but it’s all very close to town.
