depositors now Rs 25,000
Mumbai : The Reserve Bank
of India on Thursday raised the
withdrawal limit for depositors
of Punjab and Maharashtra
Cooperative Bank Ltd to Rs
25,000 from Rs 10,000.
"The Reserve Bank of India
again reviewed the bank's liquidity
position and, with a view to
reducing the hardship of the
depositors, has decided to further
enhance the limit for withdrawal
to Rs 25,000. "With the
above relaxation, more than 70
per cent of the depositors of the
bank will be able to withdraw
their entire account balance. The
Reserve Bank is monitoring the
position of the bank and will
continue to take necessary steps
in the interest of depositors," the
36AAA(5)(a) read with
President of Pakistan.
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been
strident in his attack on India, alleging that New
Delhi is denying Muslims their fundamental
rights and that it is attempting to change the
demography of Muslim-majority Kashmir valley.
However, in his own National Assembly, the
House with majority voice, blocked minority
member Dr Naveed Aamir Jeeva's attempt to
introduce the Constitution (Amendment) Bill
2019. Jeeva sought an amendment to Article 41
and 91 of the Constitution to allow non-Muslims
to become Prime Minister and President of
Pakistan. But Minister of State for Parliamentary
Affairs Ali Muhammad opposed the proposed
legislation, saying that Pakistan is an Islamic
Republic where only a Muslim can be elevated to
the slots of President and Prime Minister.
He maintained that minorities in Pakistan are
enjoying complete freedom, security and their
rights are being protected. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)
member Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali appreciated
the stance taken by the minister, saying that
"no law against Islamic values and teachings can
be passed, introduced or even debated in the parliament".
The deliberations of Pakistan's National
Assembly on Wednesday are another attempt to
tell the minorities of Pakistan that they can never
aspire to the highest position in the country.
India, conversely, has had two Muslim
Presidents, Zakir Husain and Fakhruddin Ali
Ahmed. Mohammad Hidayatullah for a time was
the acting President. Hidayatullah not only
served as the Vice President of India, he was also
the 11th Chief Justice of India. Mohammad
Hamid Ansari served for 10 years as the Vice
President of India.
arrested two directors of the
Housing Development
PMC Bank scam, an official
said. Rakesh Wadhawan and his
son Sarang Wadhawan, accused
of loan default, have been arrested
by the Economic Offences
Rs 3,500 crore of HDIL have
also been frozen by the EOW, he
said. "We arrested the two directors
of HDIL after a detailed
interrogation," the official said.
PMC Bank used more than
21,000 fictitious accounts to
hide loans it made, according to
officials, in the latest banking
Pakistani Sikhs demand religious school for children
Mingora -The Sikh community
in Pakistan has raised a
demand for a religious school for
their children to impart them
knowledge of 'Gurmukhi'. They
have also demanded government
holidays on their festivals.
The Sikh leaders in Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa's Mingora have
said that their community is living
in the Swat valley for the last
300 years and feels safe here.
They have some demands for the
government including a school
for Sikh children, a report in the
Pakistani media said.
Gulzari Lal, a Sikh, said: "We
don't have religious schools to
provide education to our children
in Gurmukhi language.
We'll be thankful to the government
if it makes arrangements
for the same".
He said there are 300 Sikh
families residing in the Swat valley
and they need a community
hall to organise their functions.
The Sikh leaders have also
demanded government holidays
on their religious festivals. They
said that there are Sikhs working
in various government offices
who don't get holidays on their
festivals.
Pakistan tells minorities they
can't be PM, President
Committee's
head Banwari Lal thanked the
administration for providing
security to the Gurdwara but
said that the security personnel
are Muslims and it's difficult to
differentiate between Sikhs and
Muslims by just looking. He
asked for Sikh security guards.
Asked about these demands,
officials said all legal demands
of the Sikh community will be
fulfilled.
Imran Khan speaks to Bangladesh
PM before her India trip
Dhaka : Pakistan Prime Minister
Imran Khan telephoned his
Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh
Hasina on the eve of her visit to India
on Thursday.
"Pakistani Prime Minister Imran
Khan phoned Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina this afternoon and exchanged
pleasantries," the Bangladesh Prime
Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul
Karim said on Wednesday, reported
bdnews24.com.
He said that the Pakistani Prime
Minister, during the conversation,
inquired about the condition of
Hasina's eye, which was operated in
London. Hasina had recently undergone
a surgery on her left eye in
London. Hasina met Prime Minister
London : Scientists have
developed a "smart shirt" that
can accurately measure breathing
and could be used to monitor
lung disease by sensing movements
in the chest and abdomen.
Researchers from Radboud
University Medical Centre in
The Netherlands used the smart
shirts, together with a mobile
app, to reliably measure breathing
in healthy people while carrying
out a range of everyday
activities.
"Smart shirts are already
available, but they tend to be
used by professional or amateur
sportsmen and women. We
wanted to see whether a smart
shirt could provide an accurate
and more practical alternative
for measuring lung function,"
said Denise Mannee, a technical
physician from Radboud
University.
The researchers can now test
out the smart shirts with patients
who have chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD).
COPD is a growing problem
with around 64 million people
suffering with the condition
worldwide.
The smart shirt, called the
"Hexoskin", senses how the fabric
stretches when the wearer's
chest expands and contracts and
uses these measurements to
gauge the volume of air inhaled
and exhaled.
It also records heart rate and
movement.
During the study, the team
Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the
UNGA in New York and the two
leaders are scheduled to meet again
This 'smart shirt' can accurately
monitor lung disease
asked a group of 15 healthy volunteers
to wear a smart shirt
while doing everyday activities
including lying down, sitting,
standing, climbing stairs and
vacuuming.
Participants said the smart
shirts were comfortable and
could be worn underneath their
normal clothes.
At the same time, the volunteers
also wore the equipment
traditionally used to measure
breathing that includes a face
mask and bulky backpack.
Researchers compared the
measurements recorded using
the two techniques for each person
doing each activity on the
two occasions.
In general, they found that the
measurements were very similar.
When lying, the difference
between measurements taken by
the two pieces of equipment was
just 0.2 per cent on average,
which only represents a few millilitres
of air.
In more strenuous activities
there were slightly greater differences,
for example with vacuuming
the difference was 3.1 per
cent on average, or around 40ml.
"These results are important
because they indicate that the
smart shirt can be worn by
patients while they go about
their daily lives to accurately
measure their lung function,"
said Mannee.
The researchers now plan to
repeat tests on the smart shirts
with COPD patients.
during her India visit. Imran Khan
during his UNGA visit had not held
any meeting with Hasina.
Jolt for Congress in Maharashtra as Nirupam won't campaign
Mumbai : In a pre-poll jolt for the
Congress in Maharashtra, senior
party leader Sanjay Nirupam
declared on Thursday that he will
"not campaign" in the October 21
Assembly elections.
The former Mumbai Congress
chief and three-time MP's decision
came after the party rejected his plea
for nominating at least one Muslim or
minority candidate from each district
in the state. "For Mumbai, I had recommended
only one name of a potentially
winner Muslim candidate from
Versova, but that has been rejected
without assigning reasons. This
means the party has no need for me. I
shall sit at home during elections," a
jilted Nirupam told IANS.
However, former minister and
senior Congress leader Naseem
Khan has filed his nomination from
the Chandivali assembly seat on
Thursday after putting up a huge
show of strength. The development
came just a day after the party's former
Haryana chief Ashok Tanwar
staged a protest along with his supporters
outside the residence of
Congress interim President Sonia
Gandhi in New Delhi, alleging that
election tickets were being sold.
Shortly after Nirupam's announcement,
speculation was rife in
political circles that he would walk
over to the ruling Bharatiya Janata
Party and contest from Borivali
assembly seat, but he declined to
comment on this.
