ART WORDS | NATALIE FINDLAY IMAGES | CINDY CANTELON AND CHELSEA BISCHOFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY CINDY CANTELON the art of cindy cantelon unshine Coast is the muse for Cindy Cantelon, owner/artist of Earthly Creature Designs. She has lived on the Coast for over twenty years, while creating art and jewelry for almost forty. Cindy’s design inspirations come from the beautiful wild flora and fauna that the Coast provides. In her collection you’ll find many local critters living in the Pacific Northwest coastal rain forest: birds, turtles, snakes, frogs, newts, bees, flowers, trees, and more. Cindy studies and sketches her subjects before she begins a new sculpture. She uses the method of “lost-wax” casting to create her original sculpture designs, working the wax as if it was paint, using hot tools to move the wax and create texture and form. Then an exact duplicate is created in bronze, silver, or gold, which is used to cast a silicone rubber mold of the original sculpture. She then Screates wax replicas before moving on to the final casting of the sculpture. 14
After 45 years at the jeweller’s bench, Ian has decided it’s time to close our retail shop. Our whole collection must go, so for the first (and last time) we’re discounting our one-of-a-kind hand forged pieces and rare loose gemstones. Each piece is then meticulously hand-finished, producing a sculpture, either in silver-pewter or copper-plated, with deep patinas highlighting the beauty of the material and the design. Hand forged in 18K yellow and white gold, set with a Sri Lankan blue sapphire and diamonds. Cindy loves working with metals. Her material of preference has been silver-pewter for most of her designs of earrings, brooches, pendants, necklaces, and small sculptures for the garden. Obsessed with the details, she has put 100+ hours on her latest and largest project of a blooming foxglove flower. Cindy’s next endeavour is adding to her to collection with sculptures and jewelry made in bronze, silver, and gold.
