PAGE 10 - MADISON MESSENGER - September 29, 2019 www.madisonmessengernews.com Area students named National Merit semifinalists Two Madison County area students are among the approximately 16,000 high school seniors named as semifinalists in the 65th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They are Kent Gingerich of Plain City, a student at Shekinah Christian School, and Caleb Arteaga of West Jefferson, a student at West Jefferson High School. More than 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. National Merit semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,600 scholarships worth more than $31 million to be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a semifinalist must submit an application in which they provide information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards. More than 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. The National Merit Scholarship Corp., a non-profit organization, and about 400 business organization and higher education institutions underwrite the scholarships. John Thomas Adelsberger, 89, of Marysville died unexpectedly Monday morning at Memorial Hospital. He farmed with his dad and raised his family in Madison County after graduating from Monroe High School in Plumwood in 1947. He also owned and operated Adelsberger Trucking. John was a caring giving man who expressed his love and gratitude and was known for his quick wit, hearty laugh, green thumb and generosity. Through the years, he volunteered with several organizations: St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg, 4-H leader with the Monroe Winners, Madison County Senior Fair Board of 17 years, Madison County Lions Club, Windsor and Community Seniors, Inc. in Marysville and the Monroe Alumni Association. In recent years, he was best known for his planting and maintaining beautiful flowers at sites all over Marysville including his current parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. John was born October 21, 1929 at the family home to the late Ralph and Nellie Adelsberger. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan A. Dew Adelsberger; a son Paul Adelsberger, a great-granddaughter Abbigale Hollar; and a brother Ralph Adelsberger. Known as Johnny, Dad, Grandpa, Pappy John, “Berger”, he will be sadly missed by his children, JoAnn (David) Dhume, Jane Adelsberger, Phil (Bridget) Adelsberger; step-children, Lori (Rob) Graber, Robert “Bubba” (Annette) Parsons, Doug (Joyce) Parsons, Vicki (Tom) Greco, John “Jack” (Theresa) Parsons; 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, brother, Jim (Anne) Adelsberger; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours were held on Friday from 5-7pm at the Ingram Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Kevin Kavanagh officiating. Burial will be held at the Somerford Cemetery in Summerford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Building Fund, the Union County Cancer Society or the Union County Humane Society all in care of the funeral home. William loved spending time with family and grandchildren and his dog, Lauren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching Ohio State and the Pittsburgh Steelers. William is preceded in death by: his parents, William and Louise Masters. He is survived by: his children, Tom (Beth) Masters and Aubrey (Jennifer) Masters; sisters, Leslie (Steve) Scott, Colette (Ricky) Hattfield and Denise (Rick) Steinwender; grandchildren, Hayden, Gavin, Logan, and he was a father figure to Todd Henson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. The family receive friends Sunday, September 22, 2019, from 2-5 PM at the Rader-McDonald-Tidd Funeral Home, 1355 W. Main St., West Jefferson, OH, 43162. Funeral Services were held Sept. 23 at Rader-McDonald-Tidd Funeral Home, West Jefferson, with Pastor Dale George officiating. Interment followed at Glen Rest Cemetery, Reynoldsburg. Memorial donations may be made to Kobacker House or the American Cancer Society. IAMS Shane Christopher Iams, 50, of London died on Sept. 16, 2019. He was born in London on March 31, 1969, to Russell E. Iams and Beverly A. (Flynn) Hubbard. He was a United States Army veteran, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles London Aerie 950 and was employed at Bowman’s Trucking. He is survived by: his mother, Beverly A. Hubbard, (Kenneth Skaggs) of London; daughter, Charlene “Charlie” Iams, (Antwan Marcum) of West Jefferson; son, Josh (Tasha) Iams of Drums, Pa.; brother, Dustin (Michelle) Hubbard of London; sister, Jessica Iams of Powell; nephews, Mitchell Hubbard and Caleb Chmielewski. He is preceded in death by his father. Services were held Sept. 22 at Rader-Lynch & Dodds Funeral Home & Cremation Service, London, with Pastor Tyrone Artis officiating. WARD Edward Eugene Ward, 59, of London died on Sept. 19, 2019, in OSU Medical Center, Columbus. Born on Sept. 1, 1960, in London, he was a son of Marge (Hall) and William Ward. Eddie retired as a foreman from Intelligrated in London. He loved hunting and golfing with his cousin, Cole. Survivors include: his stepdaughters, Regina (Fred) and Heather; many grandchildren; stepdad, Fred Parrot; several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by: his father and mother; brother, Dirk; and sister, Marsha. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 in Eberle-Fisher Funeral Home and Crematory, London. JOHNSON Effie Loretta “Nanny” Johnson, 88, of Mount Sterling passed away on Sept. 20, 2019, surrounded by loved ones at Mount Carmel in Grove City. She was born on June 27, 1931, in Bell County, Kentucky. Nanny loved spending time with family and friends, cooking, and traveling (especially back to Kentucky). She was a proud member of the Madison Mills Alumni. She is the daughter of the late John and Lunda (Overton) Johnson. She also was preceded in death by: sisters, Opal (Otis) Remy, Mary Johnson, Dessie Johnson and Ethel Johnson; brothers, Howard Johnson, Edward Johnson, Arthur (Katie) Johnson, Luther (Betty) Johnson, Albert (Joanne) Johnson; nephews, Kenneth Ray Johnson whom she raised as her own, Jimmy Johnson, Billy Johnson, Clark Johnson, Donald Johnson, Otis Johnson and Bruce Johnson. Joanne retired from the former Dial Corp. after 27 years of service. Survivors include: her sons, Cornelius “Butch” Payne Jr. of Youngstown and Michael Payne of Monroe, La.; grandson, Cornelius Payne III; granddaughter, Adenia B. Leonard; three great-grandchildren; sister, Jackie Boronell of Florida;, brother, Gus Hoosier Jr. of London; and many nieces and nephews.
