OWL Cymru Warning to Businesses over Counterfeit Bank Notes
Police are warning businesses to be vigilant after several incidents of passing counterfeit notes have
occurred in the Gwynedd south area recently.
The individuals concerned have mostly attempted to pay for low value goods using fake Bank of Ireland £50
notes in Penrhyndeudraeth, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Porthmadog.
The two men and a woman are travelling in a dark blue Ford Transit, and have Irish accents. One of the men
has what is described as having an “Angel wing” tattoo on the left side of his neck.
It is believed that these individuals may travel throughout the North Wales area, and as such we advise
anyone who is offered a Bank of Ireland £50 note to undertake the usual checks, and if any suspicious
circumstances occur, please contact Police on 101.
Likewise, any sightings of the distinctive vehicle pictured which has
Irish number plates should be reported immediately.
DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We would like to remind residents that purchasing or using the services
of cold callers can be risky for numerous reasons. If something goes
wrong with the service, or product, they may prove difficult to trace.
Some traders will quote a price but then ask for substantially more
money when the job has been completed. Some work can be carried
out and completed to a poor, or even unsafe standard. Some cold
callers are also linked to burglaries, or other criminal activity. Police are
asking for residents to be vigilant and wary when dealing with cold callers at the door and to report any
suspicious persons or activity to them as soon as possible. They are also asking for residents to pass this
information on to older, or more vulnerable neighbours as they may get targeted. Reputable, local
traders can be found via North Wales Trading Standards Services ‘Buy With Confidence’ Scheme https://
www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk
Trading Standards and North Wales Police are warning residents that cold callers are again targeting
Flintshire. There have been incidents over the weekend where cold callers are targeting residents by trying
to claim that their homes require work that does need doing and then vastly overcharging for work they
may do. In one case the cold callers used a child to try and get the resident to agree to work.
If you are cold called by traders saying your house needs work doing politely refuse their offer and close
the door. If you are concerned that your house may need work doing contact a local trader you know you
can trust. If you are unsure about finding such a trader ask friends or family for a recommendation or
search for suitable local traders on Buy With Confidence. If you are over 60 or disabled contact Care and
Repair North East Wales and they will be able to assist you.
Flintshire Trading Standards offers residents free No Cold Calling stickers for their front doors. If you would
like to request a sticker please contact Flintshire Trading Standards on 01352 703181
Police have issued a warning with regards to rogue Trading in the Wrexham and Flintshire Areas.
Unsolicited callers who offer to carry out work to clean gutters at a low cash price. Once they get onto your
roof they will inform you that tiles need fixing urgently or you have a birds nest that needs to be removed.
This will result in hundreds of pounds being charged for very little work. They will always demand payment
in cash and even take you to the cash machine to get payment. They often intimidate victims by carrying
out the works without agreement and then demand payment.
They also use this method to establish if you keep cash in your house and where you keep it. Please look
out for cold callers especially around the more vulnerable and isolated members of your community.
If you see anything suspicious contact trading standards or the Police on 101
Further warning from Wrexham Police: Residents Beware.... Cold Callers / Rogue Traders are active in the
Wrexham area. Please help to safeguard the most vulnerable members of the community by challenging
TELEPHONE COLD CALLERS
An Anglesey resident has reported having received a telephone call from a person claiming to be from
Amazon. The call appeared to come from a mobile telephone number, which is why they answered. The
resident does not have an Amazon account and put the phone down on the caller. It is not known in which
direction the call would have taken however there are a number of scams in circulation from callers
claiming to be from Amazon.
One is where a person receives an automated call which claims the recipient has just been charged for
Amazon prime subscription. The recipient of the call is told that fraudsters have used their details to
subscribe to Amazon Prime and to press ‘1’ to cancel the subscription.
One variation of the scam is that doing so will provide the recipient with more information, whilst
another says it will connect to an ‘account manager’. Whichever calls is received the aim appears to get the
recipients to press ‘1’ connecting to a premium rate number. Amazon request that if you receive a
suspicious call claiming to be from them, asking for payment or offering a refund that you do not expect do
not share any personal information and disconnect immediately.
Warning - Courier Fraud Scams ‘Westminster Police’ ‘Serious Fraud Office’
OWL Cymru are warning the public to be alert to courier fraud scams after Police received a number of
reports from members of the public last week.
Residents have reported receiving phone calls from scammers claiming to be from Westminster Police or
the Serious Fraud Office with the caller identifying himself as DC Cole or DC Ryan. The fraudster goes on to
tell the victim that their bank account has been compromised and their details used to make large
purchases in an Argos store in London…………..continued
The fraudster convinces the victim to withdraw a large amount of cash from the bank to protect their
money. Once the victim has the cash in their home the fraudster will send a courier to collect the money
from the address with the promise that the money will be kept safe.
In one case an elderly female victim, not in North Wales, was asked to go to her bank and withdraw £9700
in cash in order to protect her money. The victim was also told by the scammer not to inform the bank staff
of the reason for the withdrawal and to make an excuse for wanting such a large amount of money. The
victim was advised to call 111 to confirm it was the police she was speaking to.
Luckily there have been no financial losses in North Wales reported as yet but similar scams have been
seen across the UK with victims handing over large amounts of cash to fraudsters. Often the victims have
no reason to doubt the fraudsters as they appear to know the victims personal details. The fraudsters will
urge victims to act quickly and create a fear that the victims money is in danger of being lost.
Please see the following advice to residents
If you receive a telephone call from ANYONE asking you to move or withdraw your money END THE CALL
IMMEDIATELY.
Your bank and the police will NEVER ask you to withdraw your money or transfer your money into a
different bank account.
Beware of cold calls even when the caller appears to have personal information such as your address, date
of birth or bank account details and do not give out your personal details to callers.
If you are concerned or receive a similar request use a different phone or neighbours phone to call 101 to
report the matter or wait 10 minutes to make to call to ensure the scammers have cleared the phone line.
(www.actionfraud.police.uk) or call on 0300 123 2040.
OWL CYMRU
CRIME WATCH NEWS
Ed.132 week ending 24.10.19
As reported by Leader Live: A NORTH Wales grandmother spoke about her
role as a ‘community superhero’ and how preloved teddy bears have helped
her spread a vital safety message to hundreds of people.
Susan Griffiths, who volunteers with OWL, has helped to create more than 300 teddy
bears as part of the ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ campaign which aims to keep people safe as
darker nights start to draw in as we say goodbye to summer. The preloved teddy
bears are donated to OWL Cymru by members of the public but, before going to their
new homes, they are given a knitted or crochet hat and scarf in one of the four neon colours linked to the campaign.
Susan, who worked with North Wales Police for 30 years before 10 years of childminding, told the Leader: “I love what
I do, it is so rewarding to see that it is making a difference and getting a very important message heard with people
young, old and everywhere in between.
“It all started when someone got in touch with a bunch of teddy bears destined for landfill to see if we had any use for
them – and the campaign was born from there. Everyone at some point in their life has loved a teddy bear and all of
our preloved bears are now given a new purpose and lease of life by helping to bring their own safety messages to the
community.” Susan, also known as her alter ego of SuperGran, prepares the bears ready for their new home with a
new set of clothes, a name and story incorporated into their very own adoption certificate.
The campaign was formed in January 2018 and, since then, more than 300 bears have been
donated and given a new name and backstory to help spread awareness of being safe and
seen in the darker nights.
The bears clothing also ties in with the range of bright products that OWL offer to help
people be safe in the dark. Susan added that members of the public have backed the bright
bears campaign – through donations of old teddy bears and wool or by giving their time to
dress the bears in brightly coloured hats and scarves. These bears have been used to bring comfort to older and
vulnerable people, children and people during traumatic experiences. One story involves PC Matt Jones, from
Flintshire who has worked with the Metropolitan Police for four years, and his bear Dafydd whom he received after
sustaining an injury.
Matt started volunteering with OWL Cymru at the age of 14, with the desire to stop drugs on the streets of his
hometown and violence in the home. Susan tailored a story for Dafydd the bear - who’s certificate says he is on a
secret mission as a member of fictional group Bears Against Violence who was sent to look after the injured constable.
Denise Edwards, CEO of Owl Cymru, expressed her gratitude for all that Sue has done for the project. She said: “Sue is
a real-life superhero. Sue’s character of SuperGran plays a big part in this campaign, not just because she likes to dress
up, it is because this targets children and their safety and we believe that grandparents can be a vital part of that. The
message connected to our bears is one of personal safety. During the darker nights, we encourage the public to wear
something bright, but we are hoping to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless to help them, not abuse them.”
Volunteers are welcome to help with the task of knitting and crocheting items for the bears – and any bears looking
for a new home are always welcomed by OWL, please contact them.
