NOT ONE but two books about
Kieran Read will be launched in
Christchurch on November 22.
The retiring All Blacks captain
will appear at an event to release
Kieran Read Straight 8 The
Autobiography at Canterbury
University’s new UCSA building.
And on the same night,
Kieran Read Straight 8 by Scotty
Stevenson will also be launched.
Stevenson, a Spark Sport
commentator for the RWC, will
also be at the event, where signed
copies of the
books will be
available.
Read was
unable to discuss
the launch of
the books when
contacted by
The Star as he
was focused on
the All Blacks
third and fourth
place RWC match against Wales
tomorrow night.
The two-time RWC winner will
call time on his All Blacks career
after the match. He plans to move
to Japan with his wife, Bridget,
and their three children to play
for Japanese club Toyota Verblitz
on a one-year contract.
His autobiography features an
open and honest account of his
rugby career, including insights
into the unique pressure around
taking over as All Blacks captain
from the now-retired Richie
McCaw. He
discusses the
emotional toll
injuries and
defeats have had
on his career
and the “intense
experience of
representing a
rugby-obsessed
nation”.
Read also
gives his take
on the various
personalities and
misdemeanours
of his teammates,
coaches and opponents.
The No 8 underwent surgery in
2016 on his wrist and on his lower
spine in 2017.
Born in Papakura, Auckland,
in 1985, Read went on to win the
RWC in 2011 and in 2015, and is
the third most capped All Blacks
player of all time with 125 tests.
He has captained the All Blacks
since 2015 and was named New
Zealand player of the year in 2010
and 2013, and World Rugby player
of the year in 2013. Read was a
three-time Super Rugby winner
with the Crusaders in 2008, 2017
and 2018, and accumulated 145
caps for the team.
Stevenson has written several
biographical books for other
professional sportsmen, including
Cory Jane: Winging It (2015), The
Kiwi Pair (with Hamish Bond
and Eric Murray, 2016), Beaver
(with Stephen Donald, 2017) and
Crocky: Wyatt Crockett (2018).
Little High Eatery developer
The market on
Oxford Tce is another
development from
Mr Peebles and
his partners Mike
Percasky and Kris
Inglis.
“Little High has
been increasing [in
turnover] all the time,”
he said.
“It has been a continued
trend since it opened, but those
the Riverside Market
what the impact was
going to be.”
Mr Peebles said
businesses surrounding
the Riverside Market
are also experiencing an
increase in turnover.
“The whole idea is for
Riverside to bring more people
into the city and we know it has
had a massive positive impact
on the surrounding businesses.”
Original Sin bar owner Max
Bremner said there has been an
increase in turnover of 15 per
cent at the Oxford Tce bar for
the “lunch period and over the
weekends.”
Hawker Roll manager Deepak
Sapkota said the Cashel St
restaurant has also experienced a
five per cent increase in turnover
