HAPPY: Rolleston’s Harrison
Rooney with the official coin.
Young fan’s
big moment
•From page 1
Speaking after he stepped off
the pitch, Harrison said: “It was
absolutely amazing, I loved being
out there and meeting some of my
favourite players.
“I’ve been playing cricket since
I was five because my Dad taught
me. I want to be a cricket player
like Trent Boult one day.”
Head of Sponsorship at ANZ,
Sue McGregor, said Harrison
was one of 28 young cricketers
selected to take part in the prematch
ritual this cricket season.
“Young Kiwi cricket players are
often inspired by New Zealand’s
professional players, so we wanted
to give them an opportunity to
meet their sporting heroes. We
hope all Coin Toss Kids winners
have fun, enjoy the experience
and are inspired to continue to
play the game,” she said.
New bylaw plan to control animals
• By Devon Bolger
THE CONTROL of animals,
other than dogs, could be subject
to a new bylaw.
The district council is considering
implementing the bylaw
which will cover public health,
safety and nuisance problems
that can arise with
animals in urban areas.
Group manager environmental
and regulatory
services Tim Harris said:
“The huge population
growth we’ve had in the
district has also meant a
big increase in pets and
animals living in our
towns. We’re expecting this
to continue as the population
continues to grow, so it’s a good
time to start thinking about the
issues that come with that,” he
said.
Dogs are already managed
under separate legislation and
the District Plan, which is
currently under review, will
set out controls for larger scale
and commercial activities like
kennels and animal boarding
facilities.
The district council is considering
whether any specific controls
on cats should be included
in the bylaw.
Mr Harris said: “We thought
Tim Harris
it was important to let people
know that we would be considering
cats as part of the discussion
as they are, along with dogs,
a very popular pet in the district
but they are only one of the
animals that will be part of this
discussion.
“While we expect people
to have views on microchipping
and desexing
we are asking for people’s
views on a range of possible
issues that could be
considered.”
The community is being
asked for their input
into the bylaw before it is
proposed.
“Anything put forward will be
considered in the development
of a draft bylaw and people will
have further opportunities to
comment on the bylaw as it
moves through the full consultation
process,” Mr Harris said.
The community feedback will
be used to help develop a draft
bylaw which will then be opened
for formal consultation in mid
next year.
council is considering a
bylaw that would place
controls on cats.
