NC Stage presents “Jeeves at Sea” this February BY STAFF REPORTS • DOWNTOWN based ASHEVILLE on the stories of P.G. Wodehouse It’s no surprise that Bertie Wooster is, once again, in a sea of trouble — but, this time, his hijinks have gone adrift. Bringing back the beloved characters of P.G. Wodehouse for a fourth consecutive year, North Carolina Stage Company shines the satirical spotlight on 1920s high society in the all-new adventure “Jeeves at Sea,” playing for four weeks at the theater beginning Jan. 23. “I’ve had so many people approach me and ask, ‘Are you bringing back Jeeves?’” said Angie Flynn-McIver, producing director at NC Stage. “Our audiences love these characters and stories, and we’re excited to be able to bring them back for another season.” For the uninitiated, Jeeves is the competent valet of rich, playboy Londoner Bertie Wooster — and, as such, he’s tasked with solving the numerous, often hilariously absurd problems and predicaments that Bertie repeatedly stumbles into. The characters are of Wodehouse’s creation, but the performances are adaptations by playwright Margaret Raether. “I grew up reading these books,” Flynn-McIver explained. “I loved them. They were stories I wanted to read again and again. In 2017, the theater followed up with “Jeeves in Bloom” and, the following year, it produced “Jeeves Takes a Bow.” “Jeeves at Sea” is the latest of Raether’s adaptations and the latest installment to hit the downtown Asheville stage. This time, the crew is sailing aboard the Vanderley yacht. A pampered guest of the lively Lady Stella, Bertie is reveling in a life of maritime luxury. But when his pal Crumpet assaults a prince, Bertie’s relaxing cruise takes a sharp and tempestuous turn. MUSIC “It’s that same delightful combination of elements that people come back for year after year — made fresh and fun by the humor and style of writing,” Flynn-McIver said. “There’s a comfort and familiarity in the formula. You’re thinking, ‘Oh! There goes Bertie again! He never does learn!’ It’s endlessly entertaining.” To ward off trouble on the ship, Bertie and Crumpet have taken on disguises: Bertie masquerades as a romance novelist while Crumpet poses as his long-lost twin. But, even in disguise, these two can’t avoid attention, and Crumpet is challenged to a duel by a sinister foreign count. “He’s gotten himself in some hot water,” Flynn-McIver said. “A lot of shenanigans ensue. And because most of the action takes place on a yacht, the sense of being enclosed — unable to escape — really adds to the fun.” Reprising their roles for yet another season of hilarity, Scott Treadway returns as Bertie and Michael MacCauley plays Jeeves.
