It’s no surprise that Bertie Wooster<br />
is, once again, in a sea of trouble —<br />
but, this time, his hijinks have gone<br />
adrift.<br />

of P.G. Wodehouse for a fourth<br />
consecutive year, North Carolina Stage<br />
Company shines the satirical spotlight<br />
on 1920s high society in the all-new<br />
adventure “Jeeves at Sea,” playing for<br />
four weeks at the theater beginning<br />
Jan. 23.<br />
“I’ve had so many people approach<br />
me and ask, ‘Are you bringing back<br />
Jeeves?’” said Angie Flynn-McIver,<br />
producing director at NC Stage. “Our<br />
audiences love these characters and stories, and<br />
we’re excited to be able to bring them back for<br />
another season.”<br />
For the uninitiated, Jeeves is the competent<br />
valet of rich, playboy Londoner Bertie Wooster<br />
— and, as such, he’s tasked with solving the<br />
numerous, often hilariously absurd problems and<br />
predicaments that Bertie repeatedly stumbles<br />
into. The characters are of Wodehouse’s creation,<br />
but the performances are adaptations by playwright<br />
Margaret Raether.<br />
“I grew up reading these books,” Flynn-McIver<br />
explained. “I loved them. They were stories I<br />
wanted to read again and again. Directing these<br />

NC Stage first introduced the duo to Asheville<br />
audiences in 2016 with “Jeeves Intervenes” —<br />
and extended the show’s run due to its popularity.<br />
In 2017, the theater followed up with “Jeeves<br />
in Bloom” and, the following year, it produced<br />
“Jeeves Takes a Bow.”<br />
“Jeeves at Sea” is the latest of Raether’s<br />
adaptations and the latest installment to hit the<br />
downtown Asheville stage. This time, the crew is<br />
sailing aboard the Vanderley yacht. A pampered<br />
guest of the lively Lady Stella, Bertie is reveling in<br />
a life of maritime luxury. But when his pal Crumpet<br />
assaults a prince, Bertie’s relaxing cruise takes a<br />
sharp and tempestuous turn.<br />

“It’s that same delightful combination<br />
of elements that people come back for<br />
year after year — made fresh and fun by<br />
the humor and style of writing,” Flynn-McIver<br />
said. “There’s a comfort and<br />
familiarity in the formula. You’re thinking,<br />
‘Oh! There goes Bertie again! He never<br />
does learn!’ It’s endlessly entertaining.”<br />
To ward off trouble on the ship, Bertie<br />
and Crumpet have taken on disguises:<br />
Bertie masquerades as a romance novelist<br />
while Crumpet poses as his long-lost<br />
twin. But, even in disguise, these two<br />
can’t avoid attention, and Crumpet is<br />
challenged to a duel by a sinister foreign<br />
count.<br />
“He’s gotten himself in some hot water,”<br />
Flynn-McIver said. “A lot of shenanigans ensue.<br />
And because most of the action takes place on a<br />
yacht, the sense of being enclosed — unable to<br />
escape — really adds to the fun.”<br />
Reprising their roles for yet another season of<br />
hilarity, Scott Treadway returns as Bertie and Michael<br />
MacCauley plays Jeeves. NC Stage Artistic<br />
Director Charlie Flynn-McIver portrays crumpet,<br />
Karin Metzger plays Lady Stella, and Ryan Mitchell<br />
takes on the sinister Count Otto Dietrichstein.<br />
