Dan ponders some
new mayoral wheels
By SHELLEY TOPP
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon had his
eye on aclassy lineup of Mustangs in
North Canterbury last Sunday.
The mayor, who is aselfconfessed
petrolhead from way back, attends the
American Classic Car Club’s annual
Canterbury USA Day every year, but was
an invited guest at this year’s event, held
last Sunday at Woodend’s Gladstone
Park.
‘‘I’ve been abig car fan ever since I
was asmall boy,’’ he said. ‘‘I love the
Mustangs.’’
He joked that aMustang would make a
fine mayoral car, before quickly adding
that no money was budgeted for one, so
it would have to be apersonal purchase.
Dan also admired asixseater, eightcylinder
convertible 1934 Buick 68C
owned by Owen Frew, of Fernside.
The gleaming, immaculately
presented Buick won the Best in Show
award at the event.
Dan thought it would also make a
The Buick is one of only five still
registered worldwide.
The annual show was held in hot,
sunny weather with alarge crowd,
thought to be arecord, turning out for
the event.
The day focuses on Americanmade
vehicles, cars, pickup trucks and
motorbikes.
The familyoriented day drew about
650 vehicles, ranging from the 1920s to
presentday models.
There was also live music by Sign of
the Firebird.
It was the club’s 28th anniversary and,
to celebrate, members decided to raise
money on the day for the Ronald
McDonald House charity.
Club treasurer Jimmi Anderson said
on Monday it was too early to confirm the
exact amount the club would raise, but
the gate tally had been bigger than usual
and they were hoping to be able to
donate $4000 or more.
