Charity Reg: 1101555 OWL CYMRU CRIME WATCH NEWS Ed.134 week ending 07.11.19 Scam Telephone calls continued Recently there has been an increase in calls purporting the unauthorized use of your Social Insurance Number. many instances, a recorded call will come to your phone directing you to call back immediately, or press “1” to avoid prosecution. DON’T CALL BACK - DON’T PRESS “1”. No official administrative center will ever contact you through a text, use high-pressure tactics, be disrespectful, or require you to pay any money through gift cards or using Bitcoins. In NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY WILL EVER ASK FOR PAYMENT IN BITCOIN, BUT SCAMMERS WILL. IF YOU HEAR THE WORD BITCOIN - HANG UP! Everyone believes they would never fall for such scams but please make sure you talk about it with your friends, family, and neighbours. Some people are more susceptible to deceptive tactics and require more help to ensure they are aware of these fraudsters. The list of frauds and scams is large and changes every day. The easiest way of combatting this crime is by not falling victim to it. When in doubt – JUST HANG UP. A telephone call was received on Friday November 1st claiming to be from a Fraud team advising the recipient that £600 was taken from their account, with a card and to press 1 for more information. The recipient did not press 1 and they spoke with their bank, who confirmed that there was no issue with the account. Th etelephone number was recorded by the recipient, however telephone numbers can be ’spoofed’ to appear like a different number. A resident has received an automated telephone call from an 08456 number saying press 1 to listen to the message. It claimed to be a BT voicemail ‘text to voice’ The message claimed to be from Parcel Force. The resident was not expecting a delivery. It is not known how this call would have progressed as resident deleted it, however, this serves as a useful reminder NOT to automatically press numbers on phones, when prompted unless you are sure of the authenticity of the call. Scam/Suspicious Emails A resident has received an e mail, claiming to be from Paypal ‘confirming a purchase’. The resident had not made any purchases . Charity Reg: 1101555 OWL CYMRU CRIME WATCH NEWS Ed.134 week ending 07.11.19 KNIFE ANGEL CHESTER The knife Angel has been created as a National monument against violence and aggression at the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry and is a memorial to those whose lives have been affected by knife crime. It is a 27ft high sculpture, which Alfie has designed and created single-handedly using over 100,000 knives surrendered and collected in nationwide amnesties in 2015/2016. The angel began it's tour around the UK in 2018 when it was housed outside of Liverpool Cathedral for December and January in order to raise awareness of the impact of knife crime on society, the victims and their families and friends. ‘Almost nine in every 10 crimes involving a knife or a sharp instrument in England and Wales were robberies or violent assaults. Rape, attempted murder, sexual assault and homicide accounted for a very small proportion of offences involving a knife or sharp instrument.20 Aug 2019’ OWL Cymru is supporting the campaign to reduce knife crime.
