The golfers lent their backing to the annual RBL Poppy Appeal, with the club presenting 200 euros to Michael Reeves a.k.a. Mick the Grip to be handed over to the RBL Orihuela Costa branch. Santa Pola’s waste site Mattress mystery SANTA POLA council says that 13 thousand mattresses have been dumped in the municipality this year, which will cost the by Alex Trelinski authority ten euros each to dispose of. Down the coast, Torre- vieja council said last week that nine thousand mattresses had been dumped around the city in just the last three months, which would have a disposal price of 163 thousand euros. Santa Pola officials say that the problem is nothing to do with local furniture and mattress stores, but they believe that “foreign” companies are coming from outside the area to get rid of stock. Santa Pola´s urban cleaning councillor, Encarna Ramirez, said that the authority will now have to spend 130 thousand euros on dealing with the problem, which had not been budgeted for. “Every day we see dozens of mattresses that are illegally dumped next to refuse containers, or simply thrown into roads”, added Ramirez. “We at first thought it was residents coming to their summer homes that were changing their mattresses, but the sheer numbers involved means that simply is not the case”. Mattress dumpers in Santa Pola face a fine of 751 euros and local police patrols are keeping a keener eye out for potential law breakers in the area.
