Explore the wonderful world of<br />
local heritage at South Canterbury<br />
Museum, Timaru. From fossils to<br />
fashions there are hundreds of<br />
things to see. Discover local wildlife<br />
and geology, learn about the<br />
region’s Maori heritage, the arrival of<br />
European settlers, social history and<br />
everyday life from the last 150 years.<br />
Along with its permanent displays,<br />
the Museum features a special<br />
exhibition to mark the centenary of<br />
the end of the First World War, and<br />
its impact on local lives. This runs<br />
through until February <strong>2019</strong>,<br />
In the galleries there are puzzles and<br />
other activities for children, while the<br />
Museum’s research area provides<br />
a huge selection of documentary<br />
sources for digging deeper. Local<br />
heritage films can be viewed at the<br />
Museum and souvenirs, gifts and<br />
local history books are available for<br />
purchase in the Museum shop.<br />
South Canterbury Museum is<br />
located on Perth Street, downtown<br />
Timaru. Hours are Tuesday-Friday<br />
10am – 4:30pm, weekends and most<br />
public holidays 1-4pm. Closed 25,<br />
26 December and 1 January. Free<br />
admission, donations encouraged.<br />
