Mum ‘overwhelmed’ by kind act at New World

IT IS A NIGHTMARE many
parents with newborn babies
may be familiar with.
Halswell resident Jenny
Pascoe was shopping at
Halswell New World with her
six-week-old son Olli when he
started to scream. Miss Pascoe
was trying to calm Olli down
in one arm and shop with the
other.
This is when fellow Halswell
residents Wendy Hodgkinson
and her teenage daughter
Jessica stepped in.
Said Mrs Hodgkinson: “I saw
her when he was crying and
I thought ‘oh, the poor dear’.
Then I saw that she was trying
to carry him and push her trolly
and I just said to my daughter
‘you grab her trolly, hon, I’ll
whip this through and then I’ll
meet you and we’ll give her a
hand.”

Second meeting planned over bus speeds

decision-makers

A SECOND meeting is set to
take place in a bid to address
speeding buses and other traffic
issues in Bromley.
Southern View reported last
week on buses speeding through
Bromley, which have been seen
reaching about 60km/h in
50km/h zones. Keighleys Rd
resident and Bromley School
teacher Cathy Baker said the
buses are putting school pupils
in danger.
They are also shaking houses
on streets such as Ruru Rd and
Hay St near the bus depot on
Maces Rd.
The first meeting was held
last week and attended by about
30 people who discussed their
concerns and questioned city
council staff and Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board members.
Environment Canterbury
councillor Nicole Marshall
was also at the meeting, as the
regional council manages the
Metro bus service.
Ruru Rd resident Doreen
Hughes raised her concerns and
solutions at the meeting.

“Staff discussed how these
concerns could be mitigated
and that putting in place
road calming mechanisms
(physical and visual) to change
the appearance of the road,
influencing enforcement to
monitor speeds, speed cameras
and ways to encourage traffic to
use different routes were options
that could be considered.
“The community board will
discuss further to see what
they can advocate for, such as
to bring forward road fixtures,
talking with NZ police and
other relevant agencies,” he said.
Ms Marshall said she would
have a conversation with ECan
staff about the concerns raised
at the meeting and see what
assistance she could provide.

staff will now gather the
information needed to fully
answer residents’ questions.
A date will then be set for the
next meeting.

CROSSING UPGRADE
Work to install the South Island’s
first $300,000 puffin crossing
outside Hillview Christian School
in St Martins was scheduled to
begin on Monday and is expected
to take two months. A puffin
crossing is a pedestrian crossing
with traffic lights, which go green
for vehicles only when infrared
detectors pick up no more pedestrians.

‘Families are going to struggle’

the children because they are the
future of this country.”

has increased, so it would need

funding rate they receive doesn’t
reflect the community they serve
they can ask us to review it.

“We’d welcome their
application for a review if this has
changed.”

Government,” said Ms Dyson.
“We have a lot of neglect to
address and we are making very
good progress but there is still a
lot to do.”
Arborists bring Daisy back down
to earth in ‘challenging’ rescue

A TEAM of professional
arborists were called to take
part in a spectacular rescue last
week.
Treetech Specialist Treecare
Ltd was called out to rescue the
tonkinese cat Daisy last week
after she got stuck up a 15m tree
on Huntsbury Hill.
The drama unfolded after a
dog startled the cat, causing it to
run up the nearest tree.
SPCA Christchurch was then
alerted and reached out to Treetech
to help rescue Daisy.
The SPCA first called the Fire
Service but it did not have the
gear to attempt the rescue.
“Because the tree was down
a steep track, there was no way
any vehicles could get near it,
which made it more challenging,”
an SPCA spokeswoman
said.
The cat was stuck up the
tree for 24 hours before being
rescued.
To complete the job, Treetech
aborist Nathan Shaw had to
climb the tree and descend onto
the limb where the cat was from
above.
He then approached the cat
cautiously and gently lifted it
into his empty rope bag.
The rope bag was secured at
the top and then gently lowered

Once on the ground, the
SPCA crew transferred Daisy
to a cage. Treetech managing
director Chris Walsh said it has
carried out similar cat rescues in
the past.
“We have even rescued an
entangled magpie out of a tree
when asked to by the Fire Service.
When we are approached
by the likes of the SPCA or Fire
Service to provide specialist tree
services, we are happy to contribute
our time and expertise,”
Mr Walsh said.
The SPCA returned the
microchipped Daisy to her
owner.

Bid to form red zone group
PEOPLE WITH an interest in
the future of the city’s red zones
have been invited to join a new
advisory group.
The goal of the group is
to help create activity and
vibrancy in the red zone areas,
including the Port Hills, the
Ōtakaro Avon River Corridor,
Brooklands and Southshore,
ahead of longer-term regeneration.
Those selected will become
community representatives
on a Red Zones Transformative
Land Use Group, making
recommendations and giving
advice on possible initiatives,
ideas, and activities to help temporarily
transform the city’s red
zone land.
The group will also make
decisions on funding for some
transitional opportunities,
which could be short-term or
projects that last up to five
years.
The projects will aim to
benefit the community and
the environment and address
sustainability or ecological
challenges.
The city council is looking for
five community representatives,
including a youth member and
three Ōtakaro Avon River Corridor
representatives, for the
group.

The Red Zones Transformative
Land Use Group is a result
of the Global Settlement Agreement,
which set out how the
Crown and city council would
work together on transitional
land-use arrangements for the
red zones.
It also requires the city council
and Crown to set up a group
to provide community input to
Land Information New Zealand
and the city council on applications
for land use that last for
less than five years.
A co-governance group will
be established once ownership
of all or most of the red-zoned
land has been transferred to the
city council.
Drop-in information sessions
about the Red Zones Transformative
Land Use Group will
be held at various locations
across the city.
Applications for a position on
the group opened on November
11 and close on January 31.
They can be completed online
or forms are available at city
council libraries and service
centres.

‘I was absolutely
blown away’

into Miss Pascoe’s car and Mrs
Hodgkinson gave her a hug and sent
her on her way. Miss Pascoe said she
was “overwhelmed” by their kind
act.
“I was absolutely blown away, It
was such a nice feeling. I’m just overwhelmed
really that someone would
actually do that. Most people just
don’t, they kind of just look and feel
sorry for you and just keep walking.”
Miss Pascoe said she didn’t get
their names at the time, so posted
about what Mrs Hodgkinson and her
daughter had done on the Halswell
Community Group Facebook page to
try and find them.
Mrs Hodgkinson saw the post,
which received more than 1000 likes,
and got in touch with Miss Pascoe,
who expressed her gratitude.
Said Miss Pascoe: “I basically just
thanked her again and said thank
you so much for your help. Coming
from someone that doesn’t like to ask
for help very often I really appreciated
it and you made a sleep-deprived
mother’s day.”
Mrs Hodgkinson said she often
carried out random acts of kindness
to give back to her community and
encourage her family to do the same.
“I didn’t do it to get kudos, I didn’t
do it for a newspaper article, I did it
because it was the right thing to do.”

Fellowship for service to education Bromley School pupils
inspired by farm visit
SOMERFIELD School and
Rowley School principal Denise
Torrey has been awarded a Woolf
Fisher Fellowship.
The fellowship is one of only
around 15 awarded this year and
is regarded as one of the highest
honours in New Zealand public
education.
Ms Torrey will attend an
eight-week study trip to North
America and the United
Kingdom, which will include a
five-day course at The Principals’
Centre at Harvard Graduate
School of Education for receiving
the fellowship.
She was presented with it by
secretary of the Woolf Fisher
Trust Dr Nigel Evans at a special
ceremony at Somerfield School
last Tuesday.
Receiving the award was overwhelming
for Denise who is in
her 37th year working in education
and 16th year as a principal.
“There have been few times
in my life where I have felt so
overcome. It was a complete
surprise. When I began teaching,
I had no firm expectations, just
a desire to be my best self, serve
the profession and make a difference
for kids. I feel incredibly
honoured, humbled and excited,
to be acknowledged in this way,”
she said.
She sees the award as an opportunity
to further improve

outcomes for students both locally
and nationally.
“I’ve always believed in the
concept of the village and that’s
why I have always involved
myself in other projects,” said
Denise.
Ms Torrey has worked for
the Education Review Office,
the New Zealand Council for
Educational Research, the
Teacher’s Council of Aotearoa
New Zealand and has served as
president of both the Canterbury
Primary Principal’s Association
and the New Zealand Principal’s
Association.
She was a member of the Tomorrow’s
Schools advisory team
and is currently a member of the
advisory group who design and
lead the Mana Ake mental health
and wellbeing project in Canterbury
and Kaikōura schools.
She is part of the Kahukura
community of practice and is
also principal at Rowley School
in a joint initiative between
Somerfield School and the Ministry
of Education.
“My mantra has always been
create, innovate and initiate
and I believe we need to look
outwards to improve within. I’m
always keen to look at how we
strengthen leadership to improve
outcomes for kids, because there
is a significant body of evidence
to show the two are linked, so
I’m excited to have the opportunity
to explore this subject more
and share this with others upon
my return,” said Ms Torrey.
Somerfield School board
chairwoman Stephanie Muller
said Ms Torrey deserves the fellowship.
“Denise has given so much at
both a local and national level.
She is incredibly focussed on her
pursuit of equity for learners,
student wellbeing and best practice
in education and I think this
fellowship is recognition of that,”
she said.
THE AIM OF a Bromley School
field trip was to inspire a new
generation of farmers.
Pupils travelled to a farm in
Sheffield on November 4 to get
a taste of farming life. It was the
first time more than half of the
32 year 3 pupils had been on a
farm.
Ferrymead Rotary organised
and funded the visit. Member
Dion Crooks said many of the
pupils suggested they wanted to
be farmers after it.
A farmer showed off a twohour-old
merino lamb and its
mother and about 12 orphan
lambs, which were fed by the
pupils.
The farmer told the children
the story of sheep-farming and
gave a demonstration of the cunning
and skills of five sheepdogs.
The children then had the opportunity
to go horse riding and
for many, it was their first time
up-close with the animals.
Pupils were also taken on a
trip up a hill in a trailer towed by
a farm bike and they then played
on the hillside.
Bromley School team leader
Alistair Cron said: “The kids

Cashmere volleyball teams earn silver

CASHMERE HIGH School
earned two silver medals at
the Canterbury secondary
schools’ junior volleyball
championships at Pioneer and
Cowles Stadiums.
Both their boys and girls teams
finished runners-up after losing
their respective finals in three
sets.
The girls team was able to
beat St Andrew’s College two
sets to one, winning the decider
26-24.
A strong Burnside team were
able to beat them two sets to zero
in the final.
Gracie Pratten and Emily
Simpson made the tournament
team.
The boys won six games during
the round-robin phase.
In spite of winning the first set
against Riccarton High School,
Cashmere lost the final two sets
to one.
Rory Skinner, Ben Higgins
and Finn Howard all made the
tournament team.
The other two Cashmere
girls teams finished strong with
Cashmere Gold finishing seventh
after a win over Riccarton High
School and Cashmere Maroon
finishing ninth after toppling
Linwood College.
Teacher in charge of
volleyball Michael Jones said
the two silver medal winning

the South Island top four in a
fortnight’s time which will be
held at the same venue.
“The boys made some
mistakes when they had their

impression at the tournament

AN ENTHUSIASTIC team
of largely first-time year 8-10
cricketers have represented
Hillmorton High at a Canterbury
junior girls cricket tournament at
Hagley Oval.
Year 9 student Taine Parfitt
coached the team for three days
and they came away with one win
and two narrow losses.
The girls had a promising
start, in spite of a six-run loss to
Ashburton College. They then
went down a one-wicket loss to St
Margaret’s College.
Their final game against
Ellesmere College ended in a 12-
run win, which was the highlight
for the inexperienced team.
Player of the day awards went
to Emily White on the first day
and Rosie Major on the second
day. The two sportsmanship
awards went to Zoe Dryden and
Mia Sharr.

How to make a cake taste as good as it looks
There is not much better
than a cup of tea or
coffee and a slice of cake,
especially when it almost
looks too good to eat. Here’s
one you can easily decorate
yourself
Morning Magpie’s carrot
cake
For the cake
2 free-range eggs and 2 freerange
egg yolks
4 free range egg whites
320g flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp ground cloves
400g neutral-tasting oil such as
sunflower or canola
540g white sugar
100g chopped walnuts
100g desiccated coconut
270g peeled and grated carrot
(about two carrots)
For the icing
525g cream cheese
210g softened (to room
temperature) butter
105g icing sugar
75g honey
fresh thyme
Directions
Cake
Separate the eggs (six in total).
Put the whole eggs and yolks
in one bowl, and the whites in
another large, clean and dry
metal bowl.
You will be left with two
spare egg yolks (with a little
imagination you can find a way
to put them to good use in some
other noble kitchen endeavour).
Add a pinch of salt to the egg
whites and, with an electric
beater, whisk until they form
stiff white peaks (the salt helps to
stabilise them). Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the
sugar and oil on high for 2min.
Add the whole eggs and egg
yolks, continuing to mix until
incorporated.
Use a rubber spatula to mix the
walnuts, coconut, and carrot into
the creamed oil and eggs.
Sift the flour, baking powder
and soda, and spices into the wet
mix, and delicately fold through.
Fold one-third of the whipped
egg whites into the rest of the
batter, followed by the rest of
them. Don’t worry if there are
a few streaks of white left – this
is far preferable to
over-mixing the cake
batter.
Divide the batter
between two greased
round silicon cake
moulds. Make sure
to weigh as you are
filling them, so that
the two rounds end
up evenly sized.
Bake in the centre
of the oven for 40min
at 160 deg C.
After baking,
let the cake cool
completely in the
moulds (at least four
hours).
If you are leaving
it overnight before
icing – this is a good
idea – wrap the
rounds in cling film
once cooled and
removed from moulds.
Assembly and decoration
Make sure all ingredients are at
room temperature, and also clear
a shelf in your fridge that a large
chopping board will fit on.
In a large bowl, beat the
cream cheese on high for about
4min, until it takes on a silky
consistency. Beat in the butter.
Add the icing sugar and honey,
and reduce the beater to a lower
speed until they are fully mixed
through. Then your icing is
ready.
If the cake rose into a dome
shape while baking, remove the
rounded top with a bread knife
to make sure both rounds are
level.
Place one cake round on a
large chopping board, and spread
a 1cm thick layer of icing on top
of it. Stack the other round on
it, making sure the two are well
aligned. Don’t worry if some of
the filling comes out the sides.
Use an offset spatula to spread
a thin layer of icing over the top
and sides of the assembled cake.
It doesn’t matter if you can see
the cake through this layer. Once
it is covered, place the cake in the
fridge for one hour. When this
first layer of icing sets, it prevents
any dark cake crumbs getting
mixed up in the final layer of
white icing.
Once the first layer is set,
remove the cake from the fridge
and apply the rest of the icing as
you see fit. You can put a thick
layer on the top and a scant layer
around the sides, but this is just
a matter of taste – you should
experiment and find a style you
like. Chill the cake for another
hour before cutting. Garnish
with fresh thyme leaves and flaky
sea salt. Use a hot bread knife to
cut the cake, cleaning it between
each slice.
