TIME is ticking by for British
expats in Spain to make
sure that they can vote in
the UK General Election on
Thursday December 12th,
with the end of Monday as
the cut-off point.
You must have been registered
to vote in the UK within
the last 15 years, and if you
were too young to register when
you left the UK, you can still
register as an overseas voter.
You can do this if your parent
or guardian was registered
to vote in the UK, as long as
you left the UK no more than
An overseas registration
by Alex Trelinski
expires after 12 months. You
must renew your registration
each year, and should have
been reminded to do so by your
Electoral Registration office in
the UK constituency that you
lived in.
If you have renewed your
registration and it will last
until after Dec 12th, you are
registered already.
If your registration has expired,
you will need to register to
vote again at gov.uk/register-tovote,
and you must to register by
midnight this coming Tuesday
November 26th.
You can also choose your
method of voting, and you can
apply to vote by proxy.
This means you appoint
someone to vote on your behalf,
and eliminates any concerns
over postal vote delays
in the pre-Christmas mail.
You need to apply by December
4th vote by proxy in England,
Scotland or Wales, but
the deadline for proxy votes
in Northern Ireland has already
passed.
With tight results expected
in some constituencies in
the so-called “Brexit” election,
every vote could count,
with anti-Brexit campaigners
in Spain calling on expats
to make sure they use their
right to vote and that they
go, if they can, for a proxy
option.
POLICE in Madrid have
A SPANISH court ruled
on Wednesday that low
cost carrier Ryanair’s
policy of charging an
extra fee for hand luggage
was “abusive”
and could no longer be
levied in Spain.
The ruling stemmed
from a passenger complaint
over the policy
which charges most people
an additional fee for
bringing anything more
than one personal item
into the cabin.
The passenger, travelling
from Madrid to
Brussels, went to court
after airline staff forced
her to pay 20 euros to
bring her 10 kilo luggage
on board.
The court ordered Ryanair
to refund her the
20 euros plus interest,
but rejected her demand
for compensation of a
further 10 euros for the
suffering she experienced,
documents.
The judge ruled that
the hand luggage, by
size and weight, could be
easily carried in the cabin,
pointing to a Spanish
regulation that allows
passengers to take hand
luggage on board at no
they saw the victim slumped
in his seat called the authorities.
An ambulance arrived
but could only declare Mr
Espada dead at the scene.
The police say the thief
would have only got away
additional cost.
The judge characterised
the charge as abusive,
adding that it “curtailed
the rights that the
passenger has recognised
by law”, and declared it
invalid in Spain.
FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2019 3
Animal welfare on the local agenda
THE Compromis political
party in Denia have called
for the formation of an official
Animal Welfare Board
in the Marina Alta town.
The motion was presented
by Rafa Carrio at a council
meeting this week, saying
I often wonder how people get drawn in
by scammers, you hear of it all the time
but how does it happen? How do people
allow it to happen?
I was recently approached by a couple
who were considering investing their
life savings. They had recently sold
their house here in Spain and wanted
a low risk investment which would
provide them with a steady income. In
the past this could have been achieved
by depositing cash with your bank and
getting a reasonable return on your
savings, however with interest rates at an
all-time low, people are being forced to
shop around.
So where do you start on your search for
an investment product? Well my clients
understandably googled ‘safe’, ‘low risk’
investments and were overloaded with
many different options. Not knowing
where to start, they postponed their
research and opted to speak with a
professional who can at least explain in
simple terms how investments work and
what would be most suitable. Days later,
my client was on his laptop checking
his emails when he noticed a ‘low risk’,
‘safe’, ‘capital protected’ advert appear
on the top of his screen. Inquisitively
he clicked on the advert and it took him
through to a professional looking website
where he discovered they had a fixed
interest savings plan which was capital
guaranteed and offered a set 6% return
for the next 5 years with NO FEES! This
is exactly what they were looking for so
they completed the form to receive further
information.
Days later they received a phone call
that it should involve animal
experts in fields such as
health as well as groups like
the police, local charities and
even hunters.
The plan is to improve animal
welfare and also communication
to residents on
Finance Feature
Are scammers becoming more sophisticated?
from the company who were based in
Malaga where a seemingly professional
adviser gave them confirmation that they
could have guaranteed returns of 33.82%
over 5 years with no risk to their original
capital. In fact he went as far as putting it
in writing to them, illustrating that if they
were to invest £50,000 in 5 years it would
be worth £66,910!! Being sensible they
started to research the company, and this
fixed interest, risk free savings plan. They
were re-assured by the professionalism
of the product, the company boasted that
they were operating in 189 countries
including UK, Spain, Hongkong, Thailand
and many more. Struggling to find
anything negative the couple agreed to
meet with their ‘so-called’ professional
adviser.
Having already made an appointment
to see me prior to this they popped into
the office to see what Chorus could offer
and it wasn’t long before the clients
were telling me all about the ‘risk-free’,
guaranteed returns that they were about
to sign up to, asking whether we had
anything similar.
Straight away I knew this was a scam! As
an independent adviser constantly looking
for the best options for my clients, and as
someone with nearly 10 year’s experience
advising here in Spain, all the alarm bells
began to ring.
As I started to investigate the product
in more detail, it became very clear,
very quickly that this was a completely
unregulated product, the capital guarantee
was about as useful as a chocolate teapot
and all over its literature were the words
‘for professional investors only’ (these
matters ranging from stray
cats to regulations regarding
dangerous dogs.
There will also be specific
policies regarding matters
such as dog parks, feral cat
colonies, hunting, reporting
animal abuse and dealing
with abandoned pets and
other domestic creatures.
Mr Carrio said “in Compromís
we believe that this
summer it was demonstrated
during the controversy
about the bidding of the animal
collection service, that
were the words used on all the ‘Structured
Notes’ which were miss-sold and left
devastating damage to the life savings of
many here on the Costa Blanca as part
of the Continental Wealth scam). This
couple narrowly avoided a scam that could
have swallowed their entire life savings,
and do you know what………. It could
have easily happened. On the surface,
to an untrained eye, this product looked
legitimate, and it was a mixture of luck
and fate that walked them into my office
that day.
I’m sorry to say, but in a world where
central bank interest rates are effectively
0%, it is impossible to guarantee returns.
The idea of a guaranteed, capital protected
5, 6 or 7% is preposterous to anyone who
knows their stuff, and truly understands
965 641 163
our current economic environment.
Yes, there are low risk, highly diversified
investment funds out there that have
consistently achieved growth over many
years, but they are not guaranteed and the
risks need to be properly discussed with
an independent professional to assure
suitability.
My advice is stay clear of the internet
when it comes to shopping for
investments, seek professional advice
and make sure the company and the
products you use are fully regulated and
are appropriate for you. By fully regulated
this means they will be listed with local
regulators here in Spain, and preferably
other trusted regulators like the UK FCA.
Whether it’s a product provider or a ‘socalled’
financial adviser, they are legally
obliged to clearly display their regulatory
details, reference numbers etc on everything
– articles, business cards, emails etc.
Always get a second opinion before you
commit to anything and remember, if it
seems to good to be true, it probably is. If
you are considering any new investment
THREE roads in the Valencian
Community have
made the list of Spain’s
15 most dangerous, as released
by the Linea Directa
Foundation this week.
by Simon Russell
they were unable to give an
adequate answer as to its
origins and they have been
charged under smuggling
Under Eurozone wide
regulations, you are not allowed
to enter or leave the
EU with €10,000 or more in
cash unless you first declare
it to customs.
Two of them are in Valencia
City, Blasco Ibanez and
El Cid, both busy avenues.
The other is Alicante
City’s Denia de Alicante, also
an avenue.
The convergence of pedestrians
and vehicles on
these types of roads is the
main reason for the figures
which count serious injuries
and fatalities for all
road users including those
on foot.
Last year countrywide
there were twice as many
road accidents in urban
settings as on interurban
and rural roads, with 2,360
traffic deaths in towns and
cities.
This was 13% higher than
2017 and almost half the
victims were pedestrians.
The most common urban
accident is a rear-end or
side on shunt between cars,
usually at traffic lights and
roundabouts.
These rarely cause serious
injury or death as the vehicle’s
body protects victims
and speeds are usually low.
However back sprains,
knee sprains and herniated
discs are all common minor
injuries.

Arrested in Belgium
for Spanish murder
A MAN was arrested in
the Belgian town of Tubize
last Friday in connection
with the murder of a 58
year-old woman in Malaga
the previous Tuesday.
It was initially thought
that the dead woman, a Belgian
national, was a victim
of gender violence.
However, the police have
revised this theory and they
now believe that the incident
by Simon Russell
may have been a robbery
gone wrong.
The victim had been found
at the rural property, dead
in her bedroom and showing
signs of violence. The
aggressor took the woman’s
vehicle which was how he
was located in Belgium, apparently
using number-plate
recognition technology.
ALICANTE’S Provincial
Court has rejected the appeal
of a city employee who
had been found guilty of
stealing fuel for private use.
The accused, a mechanic,
was using his work fuel card
to fill his personal vehicle
with diesel at the weekends,
embezzling a total of €1,800.
He has been sentenced to
eight months in prison and
by Simon Russell
ordered to pay back the value
of the fuel he took, plus
interest. As a mechanic he
had access to the fuel cards
to refuel town hall vehicles
after repairs.
Details of the case had
not been released until
the appeal process had
been completed.
The Belgian authorities
made the arrest and handed
the suspect over to the Guardia
Civil who have charged
him with murder and robbery
with violence.
The crime scene in Malaga
has been processed for fingerprints,
cigarette butts
and traces of DNA.
by Alex Trelinski
AVERAGE waiting times for patients to get
an operation at a Valencia region hospital
have gone up by four weeks.
Department of Health figures say that waiting
times between July and September went up by
30 days, with the average delay being 133 days
in September, compared to 103 days in June.
The data shows that there are over 68 thousand
people on the regionally waiting list to get
an operation.
Banderas took the role of
Zack who is charge of auditions
in the musical, and it
the Teatro del Soho, a former
cinema which has been completely
revamped.
The 59-year-old actor was
born and bred in the Costa del
the Spanish language production,
which will tour around
the country, could eventually
end up on Broadway.
Dozy driver blamed for police smash
THE authorities are looking
into whether a truck
driver who smashed into
a Local Police patrol car,
injuring the two agents
in the vehicle, may have
fallen asleep at the
wheel.
The incident happened in
Alicante City last week on
the Ocaña main road when
the car was waiting at a
traffic light.
It was then struck by the
truck, a breakdown recovery
vehicle, causing non-life
threatening injuries to the
two officers.
Two other vehicles were
also involved although there
are no other reported injuries.
As the driver of the truck
A HUMAN trafficker who
charged migrants up 10
thousand euros for an illegal
journey to the UK has
been put behind bars for
four years at Teruel.
Iraqi-born 36-year-old
Shwana Rafiq lived with his
wife in the Valencia area
and run his operation from
there which placed mainly
Kurdish refugees, including
whole families, into
British-bound refrigerated
lorries.
He was arrested with his
associates close to a service
area at Teruel in Aragon
as they were supervising
by Simon Russell
current two vessels registered
in the port.
The boat is set to undergo
tests off the Dutch coast this
week and, if all goes well,
will be delivered to Balearia
in December.
It will be replacing the existing
tugs, one of which has
been working in Menorca.
by Simon Russell
is unable to properly explain
why he stopped or even
a lorry full of people back
in 2017.
The Guardia Civil and
National Police believe that
Rafiq smuggled over 100
people into Britain, netting
close to a million euros over
a 12 month period.
His lawyers successfully
pulled off a plea bargain
deal with prosecutors who
originally wanted him jailed
for 14 years on a variety of
charges including money
laundering in addition to
human trafficking.
Rafiq´s wife, Esperanza
Martinez, escaped jail time
as she was given a firsttime
two year prison sentence,
which under Spanish
law meant that term was
suspended, despite the initial
prosecution call for her
to be jailed for 12 years for
helping her husband.
failed to slow down at the
traffic lights, the police are
working on the theory that
he fell asleep at the wheel.
Curry supper after Puig
ON Monday evening, 30
church members from
across our Chaplaincy
gathered and enjoyed a
curry supper.
We also enjoyed a ‘starter’,
because SARITA’S Indian
Restaurant kindly provided
by Elaine Mitchell
us with all the Poppadoms
and Mango dip.
The curries that were devoured
were cooked by Peter
Johnson and Elaine Mitchell.
This event followed a
sponsored climb around
Puig.
Fr Don, who is the Albir
& El Campello Chaplain, is
leaving us after Christmas
and this evening was also
an opportunity to make an
advance presentation to Fr
Don. This was done by one
of our Chaplaincy Wardens,
Martin Bentley.
A service of Holy Communion
is held in Albir every
Sunday at 9.45am. You can
find us in the centre of Albir.
Lighting the way to Christmas
VALENCIA City’s Christmas
light will be switched-on on
Friday 29 December, marking
the unofficial start to the
festive season in the regional
capital.
As usual the main display will
be at Placa de l’Ajuntament as
well as surrounding streets and
the main shopping areas.
There will also be large
stained glass ornaments installed
in 30 points of the city,
by Simon Russell
between streets and squares so
that nowhere is missing out. A
council spokesman said that the
decorations weren’t just for show
but also brought people into the
city especially to see them before
going on to spend money in the
many shops and bars.
The budget this year is
€121,000, 20% more than
last year.
Mayor and
thief-catcher
AWARE of a series of burglaries
in the area, Denia
Mayor Vicente Grimalt
immediately called the
police when he was visiting
his country house and
noticed the front door had
been damaged.
When the police entered
the property they were surprised
to find the culprit –
sitting on the mayor’s sofa
by Simon Russell
and having a soft drink, presumably
taking a break from
his illegal endeavours.
They arrested the suspect
who is now being linked with
a number of other break-ins
in the area in the same week.
The suspect said he had
no idea whose house he had
entered.
Holiday petition
gains steam
A CAMPAIGN has been
started to have 4 December
declared a holiday for
residents of the Alicante
province, currently the
Day of Santa Barbara, the
cities patron saint.
The current holiday for
the Valencian Community
is 9 October, recognising
the reconquest of the region
from the Moors by Jaume I.
However, this fiesta receives
only a “lukewarm”
reception in Alicante and is
seen as more of a recognition
of the achievements in
Valencia than in Alicante.
Moreover, Alicante was actually
recovered on 4 December
1248 by Alfonso X El Sabio
when the Santa Barbara
by Simon Russell
castle was taken, and which
should now be the Alicante
holiday, organisers Alacant
Murder mystery as suspect cleared
ONE of Alicante’s highest
profile court cases in
years came to an abrupt
end at the weekend as the
son-in-law of the widow of
a prominent banker was
cleared of her murder.
Known as the CAM case
as victim Maria del Carmen
Martinez was married to the
former president of the CAM
Bank, it centred around her
shooting in an underground
carpark in December 2016.
Her daughter’s husband,
by Simon Russell
Vicenta Sala Martinez, was
accused of her murder for
financial motives involving
the inheritance and business
dealings his wife and
he stood to inherit.
However, on Sunday the
case was dismissed for lack
of evidence with there being
no witnesses, no clear forensic
evidence or anything
linking him to the suspected
murder weapon.
The question the press
and police are now asking
is who did kill the wealthy
widow and why?
Rather than the complex
family affair it first appeared
to be, many are now
saying it may just have been
a mugging gone horribly
wrong.
The authorities have
not yet said if they are reopening
the files or if it
will be added to their list of
cold cases.
SPAIN’S CaixaBank has
Customers only need to
download a Face to Pay
at a special line that includes
a tablet outfitted with
Pirate switch off
A DOZEN people have
been arrested after a two
year National Police investigation
into a pirate TV operation
that saw the gang
illegally redistribute subscription
channels and videos
on demand to around
20 thousand customers in
Spain and overseas.
Two people were detained
in Alicante Province, with
investigations by the cyber
by Alex Trelinski
crime division of the National
Police also taking in
the Murcia region, as well
as Madrid, Toledo, La Rioja,
Ávila, and the Canary
Islands.
The gang used social media
to publicise their cutprice
services, with four
members specifically in
charge of syphoning-off the
TV pay channels, and then
distributing them via internet
servers across Europe in
order to avoid detection.
Items seized by the authorities
included 86 decoders,
15 hard drives, 10 computers,
17 mobile phones, and
nearly 23 thousand euros
in cash.
No further details about
the gang were supplied by
the National Police.
Flu jab shortage crisis
DESPITE a major campaign
urging people in vulnerable
groups of society to ensure
they are immunised against
the flu, the Valencian Community
Medical Union
(CESM-CV) has warned
there is currently a severe
shortage of the vaccine.
by Simon Russell
Most people who make an
appointment are having to
return in 4 to 6 weeks for the
actual shot, meaning they
are vulnerable for this crucial
period as we get into the
flu season.
There is sufficient provision
for health professionals
but others such as the
elderly, infirm and pregnant
women are being kept waiting
due to “a complete lack of
provision by the Department
of Health” according to the
CESM-CV.
whether the fire was arson.
Prospective
urban gardeners
all get their wish
ALL 52 individuals and associations
who requested
allotments in Benidorm
will be able to have one,
Environment Councillor
Monica Gomez confirmed
this week.
She explained that initially
there were slightly
more applications than plots
available, but they have
been able to restructure the
area so that all applicants
were successful.
The allotments are located
next to the Pepita Esperanza
Linares Centre in La Cala
and will be between 10 and
12 square metres for the 46
solo gardeners. The six associations,
five charities and
a neighbourhood group, will
each have double plots.
The Environment Council
will be running a training
session on organic gardening,
saving water and basic
cultivation.
by Simon Russell
Ms Gomez said many of
the applicants were younger
residents, keen on growing
their own fruit and vegetables
in an organic manner for
both health and cost reasons.
Poor start to month
blamed on government
A 5.1% drop in hotel occupancy
rates for the first half
of November is down to the
governmental delay in the
start of the pensioners Imserso
scheme according
to Hosbec, the Benidorm
hotelier’s association.
Imserso, where Spanish
by Simon Russell
resident pensioners receive
heavily subsidised holidays
funded by the state, has
lost around 60,000 bookings
for the sector at a quiet
time of the year that the
scheme usually helps plug.
Just under half the hotel
stays in November’s first
two weeks were by people
from the UK said Hosbec, a
slight fall.
The domestic market was
the second biggest followed
by Belgium, the Netherlands
and then Ireland.

Fisherman’s blues
THE Javea Fisherman’s
Association have been
talking about the issues
caused for them
by mass tourism and an
increased emphasis on
the environment, arguing
that the concerns of
commercial fishermen
are rarely taken into
account.
The worst case scenario
for them would be that
by Simon Russell
they would be effectively
stopped altogether as has
happened on the island of
Tabarca.
There are also accounts
of incidents such as divers
cutting their nets for
“environmental” reasons,
while most people understand
little of what fishermen
actually do, with
many seeing themselves
as stewards of the seas,
knowing the Javea coast
better than anyone.
The sheer number of
people in the seas in the
summer is also causing
problems, with many boatmen
choosing to set off in
the early hours of the
morning to avoid them.
Swimmers, jet skiers,
paddle surfers, divers,
small craft users and others,
many with little or no
marine knowledge, pose
a constant hazard for all
parties.
The association is calling
for greater co-operation
and co-ordination
between all parties concerned
and recognition
that a well-controlled fishing
fleet can be a benefit
not a problem.
The 19 page manuscript
shows the fear that existed
in the Marina Alta at the
time. Berber pirates were
are Carols by Candlelight
children are more than
Africa and the Moors had
Local&WhatsOn
Better parking
deal for locals
A SESSION by Calpe’s
council last week approved
various measures
designed to make parking
better for residents and
businesses in the town.
These include the introduction
of a minimum 20
minute waiting period, a
cheaper weekly ticket and
by Simon Russell
DETAILS have been announced this week
of Calpe’s New Year party, one of the biggest
fiestas in the town’s calendar of
events.
The venue will be Plaza de la Villa, starting
at 5pm with a children’s party, featuring a minidisco
at 6pm followed by a magician.
From 11pm local band Trilogy will be performing
their mix of pop and rock, taking us up
to midnight and the bells seeing in 2020.
Trilogy continue after that and at 2am DJ-
Jota starts his dance set, which is scheduled to
end at 3am.
There will be a well-priced bar service
throughout the evening.
free parking for vehicles
with zero emissions.
Local traders will be able
to have up to eight parking
cards for their vehicles if
their business is in an area
where parking is limited.
There will also be the introduction
of a “mixed” orange
zone in the old town
from 1 May to 31 October,
with a set rate between 6pm
and 9pm in a bid to limit
parking in the evenings.
It is planned that the
changes will commence
when the new parking
concessionaire is appointed.
New Year party announced
by Simon Russell
Supermarket sweep
A gang of three men and
a woman have been arrested
in Calpe accused
of stealing €500 worth of
gourmet food and accessories
from a supermarket
in the town.
Many shops are starting to
display pricey seasonal goods
at this time of year and their
haul included perfume, turron,
hand-made chocolates
by Simon Russell
and even a serrano ham.
Guardia Civil agents on
routine patrol spotted the
suspicious activity on Avenida
Juan Carol I, where a
car with driver was parked
up and the other three were
loading products into the
boot and returning to one of
three supermarkets.
The perpetrators were
wearing specially adapted
clothing with deep pockets
for the stolen goods and then
leaving at the checkout by
legitimately purchasing a
handful of cheaper products.
The stolen goods would
have been quickly sold on via
the black market. All those
in detention have a record
for similar crimes.

are asking people
which is to raise money
for Christmas presents
for children at the Raquel
Paya special needs
school.
There are currently 65
kids at the centre who all
look forward to receiving a
special gift from Papa Noel.
The charities are also hoping
to raise money this year
to help 90 local children
by Simon Russell
who are in the care of the
Red Cross.
Tickets are on sale at the
shop on the Arenal and the
library in Javea Park at
€3 for a strip of five. This
is great value considering
the prizes which include a
145cm Toshiba TV, a Christmas
hamper, restaurant
vouchers, beauty vouchers
and much more.
Not to mention of course,
that it is also all going to a
good cause. The draw is being
held at midday on 21
December in the Charity
Shop.
Recent fundraising by the
charity has seen cheques
MAYOR Jose Chulvi has
promised that the Town
Hall will fight tooth and
nail to ensure that Javea’s
rescue helicopter remains
based in the town.
The Helimer, as it is
called, currently has a 24
hour a day operational base
in Manises and the recent
rescue of 22 stranded paddle
by Simon Russell
boarders highlights the importance
of the helicopter,
said the mayor.
However, the overall body
in charge of marine rescues
has recently announced
plans to “standardise” Costa
Blanca’s rescue choppers,
meaning that any call out in
Javea would see an average
45 minute attendance time
as opposed to the current 10
minutes.
Incidents such as the latest
one may have turned
out very differently with the
extra 35 minutes, said Mr
Chulvi, adding that the issue
would be addressed this week
in the council chambers.
Ending gender violence for good
by Simon Russell
A SERIES of events are
underway in Javea to commemorate
25N, the International
Day against violence
inflicted on women
held on 25 November.
The campaign runs until
mid-December and it states
that the ultimate aim is to
ensure that the terrible toll of
1,095 women who have died
as a result of gender violence
in Spain since 2004 (when records
started) is not added to.
Events include a women’s
empowerment workshop, a
talk on violence and nightlife,
workshops with schoolchildren
of all ages and an
equality show in the Casa de
la Cultura.
There is also an exhibition
entitled “I am not your
possession” in the Museum
Soler Blasco until 15 December
and a play at the Casa de
la Cultura this Saturday and
again on Monday (23 and 25
November).
The activities have different
venues, themes and timings
and the Town Hall will be able
to give you more details.
The Department of Equality
is co-ordinating the campaign
LIFE PLANNING
Most consumers, and sadly too many advisers, don’t know
the difference between proper financial planning and plain
old product-focused and inexpert financial advice. That is
until they experience the difference for themselves.
AT Blacktower Financial
Management, after
over 30 years of helping
and advising clients,
we know that proper financial
planning is not
focused around sales,
charges, products or investments,
but is built
around the client and
their individual needs.
We understand that we
have no right to advise
clients on their money
until we understand their
specific circumstances
and desires, their goals
and fears, their plans and
dreams for the future. We
therefore pride ourselves
on offering Life Planning.
We have been at the
forefront of changing the
way the financial services
industry works by
offering holistic financial
planning that focuses on
helping clients to get the
most from their life as an
Expat in Spain. We will
tell you truth about your
money, how it can work
for you and give you realistic
growth forecasts.
We work very hard to
find the correct product
for you and we keep this
process simple, painless,
low-cost and within your
risk tolerance.
We KNOW that to
change a client’s life we
need to use knowledge
and expertise to deliver
suitable financial planning
year after year, we
don’t use gimmicks or
fancy marketing, we just
focus our energy on working
our hardest to deliver.
At Blacktower we want
to make sure people experience
the difference. We
are united by one common
belief; that our job as financial
advisers is to take
care of people, to help our
clients get the best possible
lifestyle with the
money they have. It is to
help clients do what matters
to them in their lives
before it’s too late.
Sorting out your Spanish tax
WE all hate paying tax, but
it is a fact of life in every
country including Spain,
and we at Sun Lawyers
are right across what it
means to you, and what
you must pay.
Tax in Spain can be a complicated
issue because if you
fail to make a declaration
or don’t pay the correct
amount, you can end up with
a severe fine.
Sun Lawyers will make
sure that you don´t fall foul
of the rules!
The Spanish government
frequently change their tax
regulations, which can make
it very difficult for non-residents
and residents to keep
completely up to date.
At Sun Lawyers we always
recommend seeking
independent advice when it
comes to any legal matter
in Spain.
The key points are: -
1. The Spanish tax year
runs from January
to December.
2. In Spain both residents
and non-residents are
obliged to pay taxes.
Every non-resident must
make their annual nonresident
tax declaration by
December 31st.
Put your trust in Sun
Lawyers to sort things out
on your behalf.
Am I a tax resident
in Spain?
You are a resident for tax
purposes in Spain if:
1. You spend more than
183 days in Spain in
any calendar year, regardless
of whether you
are formally registered.
2. You are self-employed
or otherwise employed
in Spain.
3. Your spouse or children
live in Spain and
you are not legally
separated even though
you may spend less
than 183 days per year
in Spain.
This is a basic guideline,
and Sun Lawyers recommend
every individual to
seek independent advice before
submitting taxes, which
is of course where we come
in to help.
Spanish tax residents
are liable to pay income
tax on their worldwide income,
which is split into
two categories:
1. Income from general
activities – this includes
income from employment,
pension, and
rental income
2. Income from savings –
this includes interest
from savings, dividend
payments, income from
life insurance policies
and gains made from
the disposal or transfer
of assets.
Tax Allowances – As a
resident you will receive a
personal allowance for your
Spanish income tax (from
both savings and general
income). These allowances
include age allowance, married
couple allowance and
disability allowance.
Since 2013, If you are a tax
resident in Spain and own assets
in excess of 50,000 euros
outside of Spain, you are required
to declare these assets
under Spanish Law.
An example of these assets
includes:
1. Assets held in any
bank account.
2. Property.
3. Shares.
4. Life insurance policies.
Non-residents tax
If you own a property
in Spain, you must pay
two taxes:
1. IBI or council tax – This
is a council tax that is
based on the rateable
value of your property
(the open market
annual rental value).
2. Notional income tax
or rental income tax.
Income tax is paid by
non-residents who own
a property whether
rented out or not.
NOTE – the Spanish tax
office does not send notifications
of IBI tax addresses outside
Spain. It is therefore advisable
for a non-resident who
has a property in Spain, to appoint
a Fiscal Representative.
Points to keep in
mind
1. You will not necessarily
be reminded that you
owe tax.
2. It is your responsibility
to make sure all your
taxes are paid.
3. Any overdue taxes
must be settled before
you sell or inherit
a property.
4. Failure to pay taxes
on time can result in
late payment interests
and sanctions.
Fiscal representation
At Sun Lawyers we appoint
one of our fiscal experts to
deal with all your tax related
needs, who then:
1. Make sure all your taxes
are paid on time.
2. Represent you to the
Spanish Tax Authority.
3. Receive all your
tax notifications.
4. Alert you to any changes
in the tax law.
5. Is always on hand to
answer any questions
you may have throughout
the year.
more, please read on.
Hedging
your bets
GARDEN enthusiasts are
being urged to go green
and swap their walls and
fences for eco-friendly
hedges.
Growing a hedge can give
your property a vibrant
splash of colour and create
an ideal habitat for birds
and bees.
And while they give you
as much privacy and protection
as bricks or wooden
fencing, they can also bring
you closer to nature.
Experts at the Royal Horticultural
Society (RHS),
who are behind the hedgegrowing
call, say planting
hedges can help turn urban
concrete corners into thriving
green spaces.
As well as capturing pollutants
and providing protection
against wind, they
can also act as efficient
sound barriers, according to
RHS research. Thick, impenetrable
hedges can also be a
great security feature.
Hedge species in urban
environments were found to
provide a “crucial resource”
for a wide diversity of animal
species – giving them shelter,
nest sites, food resources
and corridors for movement.
The varying structure of
hedges makes them well
suited for a range of specific
roles, gardening experts say.
Yew is extremely popular
when it comes to hedgemaking.
As well as being
slow growing, a yew canopy
can act as an effective sound
barrier, while also taking
pollution out of the air.
Western red cedar, with its
large and dense canopy, was
also found to be a top performing
sound barrier. Cypress
is described as another
good hedging plant.
The RHS says that planting
a mixture of species, to
extend flowering or fruiting
periods, or using a range of
plant species to provide “a
more diverse structure” can
help support wildlife.
Tijana Blanusa, principal
horticultural scientist at
the RHS, says: “In a world
that is rapidly urbanising
and where there is pressure
on land use through the increased
densification of cities,
the relatively compact
nature of the urban hedge
may have a pivotal role in
ensuring our cities remain
‘liveable’, through its various
ecosystem benefits.”

Christmas!
CHRISTMAS is coming
and with it the chance to
choose the perfect festive
plant to bring a dash
of colour to your Yuletide
decorations.
A competition to find everyone’s
favourite Christmas
plant has unveiled this
year’s winner. And it is no
surprise that the poinsettia
has taken the 2019 title.
A selection of five flowering
winter plants made the
shortlist. The cyclamen, the
Christmas cactus, the azalea
and the amaryllis joined the
poinsettia as finalists.
The final decision was left
to a panel of expert judges,
brought together by the
plants@work association,
which promotes the use and
benefits of interior plants.
And here’s the judges’
top three:
• Poinsettia
• Amaryllis
• Christmas cactus
Matthew Appleby, of Horticulture
Week magazine,
picked the poinsettia as his
number one choice, describing
it is “an iconic Christmas
favourite, with new
colours and sizes growing
the appeal”.
Award-winning garden designer
Claudia de Yong also
named the poinsettia as her
favourite. She said: “I prefer
the paler coloured ones.
They look great as part of
the table decoration in large
bowls topped by moss.”
The poinsettia was originally
recognised for its mass
of bright red bracts but now it
comes in a variety of colours -
from white and cream through
greens to pinks, bronzes and
yellows, pinks and of course
the original shades of red.
This makes it an extremely
versatile plant and perfect
for any Christmas theme or
scheme. And it even has its
own day on December 12.
The amaryllis got Rona
Wheeldon of Flowerona and
Jane Perone’s votes. Jane
said: “I just love these OTT
flower bulbs! So dramatic
and easy to grow, they offer
value for money, gorgeous
blooms and really make an
impact on a room.”
The amaryllis is also versatile
when it comes to shape
and colours, from whites
through pinks and red. Each
tall stem holds three large
flower heads from double
flowers to spidery ones.
Coming in third place was
the popular Christmas cacti.
Matthew Appleby described it
as a “retro favourite making
a comeback”.
American judge Joe
Zazzera, from Green Plants
for Green Buildings, voted
for it, describing it as a
“hearty beauty”.
The Christmas cactus
flowers at the end of its long
flat leave-like stems usually
from November to January.
The colour range is red
through pinks to white.
The buyer’s quick checklist
IF you are first-time property
buyer in Spain, or looking to upsize
or down-size, then there are
four absolutely basic things that
you should review when going for
something that you fancy, and have
it as a checklist during a viewing.
1. Check the paperwork!
You should acquire a nota simple, a
condensed report of the property details
including a brief description of
the land and property features, as
well as telling you who the owner is.
By having one of these, you can
have peace of mind that the person
selling you the house is the real owner
and that the sale is legal.
You should also be sure about
what comes with the property: any
mortgages or extra hidden fees of
any kind.
For example, all buildings in Spain
over 20-years-old need a special inspection
certificate, the Inspección
Técnica de Edificios (ITE) which
should be renewed every 10 years.
2. Know the price per
square metre and square
foot
The local council keeps track of and
sets the minimum sale price according
to the area, and use this to work out
by Alex Trelinski
the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales
(ITP), the property transfer
tax, so be aware that if the final sale
price is below the local average, the
taxes will still be higher.
3. Utilities and general
condition of the property
Check the electricity and water pressure,
and try turning on all the taps
and flicking all the light switches.
Look and see whether the fuse
box is new and if there are individual
energy and water counters. Pay
attention to the state of the drainpipes,
walls and heating. By making
sure everything is in working order
now, so you will hopefully avoid
future problems.
4. Location
How far is your local supermarket,
bank, restaurant and bar? Do you
have a decent bus connection? Is
the building north- or south-facing?
This last detail could be a big factor
on how much you spend on heating
and electricity.
Have these points on a checklist
and it gives you a good starting
point as you look to buy a property in
Spain, perhaps for the first time.
IF you own a property
in Spain that you let out
for holidays, then just be
aware of possible higher
property taxes once Britain
leaves the EU, assuming
that the UK and Spain don’t
sort out a bilateral deal.
Nothing is going to happen
just yet, but paying
more tax is an unforeseen
consequence of Brexit that
thousands of property owners
that become landlords
might have to face.
This subject is not covered
in the proposed Withdrawal
Agreement that
Boris Johnson wants to see
get through the House of
Commons if he wins next
month’s general election.
The assumption being
by Alex Trelinski
made is that no immediate
changes will happen if the
Agreement gets passed, with
the UK leaving the EU on
January 31st, and then moving
into a transition period
which is scheduled to finish
at the end of next year.
The issue in just over 13
months time is what happens
for UK landlords letting out
their homes in Spain after
that transition period ends,
as they would be classified
as coming under Spain’s tax
rules for non-residents who
do not live in an EU country.
Spanish income tax rates
for non-residents from a non-
EU country having a Spanish
property would go up by
five per cent to 24 per cent if
no reciprocal tax deal is done
between the UK and Spain.
Although the taxes are
higher, the biggest drawback
is non-EU residents cannot
offset any business expenses
against rental income.
Neither Britain nor Spain
have indicated how tax matters
will be sorted out after
Brexit, but if you are already
letting out your Spanish
property or planning to do
so in the future as a non-resident
of Spain, you should be
aware that you might have
to pay more tax.
It might not happen, but
you just need to be aware
of what the rules say right
now to avoid an unwelcome
surprise.

Hidden cost of
high rise living
by Simon Russell
AN estimated two thirds of
people in Spain live in communal
apartment blocks,
something that most are
generally happy with, appreciating
the cost, modernity
and convenience that
goes with this.
However there is one major
issue, community fees and in
particular unexpected ones.
While standard community
fees are part and parcel
of high rise living, paying for
unexpected issues such as
external repairs or a leaky
roof can cause real financial
issues for some people.
If they can’t pay, this in
turn causes friction with
near neighbours.
A major bone of contention
is replacing or installing
lifts, which can often
cost about €100,000, maybe
€10,000 an apartment.
For the elderly or infirm
they are a lifeline to the
outside world while a young
couple sharing a flat, for example,
could probably think
of things they would rather
be spending €10,000 on – assuming
they have that kind
of money in the first place.
Good communication and
regular community meetings
are key to avoid a
fallout among neighbours
who, at the end of the day,
have to live together in the
same building.
Shock in electricity bills
A CONSUMER group in
Spain has estimated that
90% of customers are
paying more for their electric
bill than they need to
simply because they do
not understand the bill.
They would save an average
of €68.40 a year, with
one of the key elements being
knowing whether your
by Simon Russell
provider is in the regulated
(PVPC) or open market.
70% of people surveyed
don’t know the answer to
this question or the fact that
PVPC regulated providers
cannot offer discounts.
Open market operators
can, but you also need to be
Mega project resumes
by Simon Russell
DRAGADOS, the company
that has taken over responsibility
for Benidorm’s iconic
but controversial Intempo
building has said that
the construction works are
set to resume this month.
The original owners Olga
Urbana declared bankruptcy
in 2014 and the skyscraper
ended up in the hands of the
Sareb “bad bank” before being
sold to a multi-national
investment firm two years
ago. The Intempo is Europe’s
tallest residential building
at 200 metres and the 47
floors will have a total of 256
apartments.
Luxury touches include an
infinity pool, spa, hot tubs,
children’s area and a rooftop
wary of offers as they can be
linked to things such as tying
you down to the provider
for a set period.
Knowing when electricity
goes up, cheap rate times
and hidden discounts that
you need to request are
other tricks consumers are
missing, said the OCU consumer
organisation.
with spectacular views.
Properties from the 38th
to 45th floor will be in the
unique diamond structure
that can be seen from almost
all points of the resort.
The top two floors are being
set aside for communal
use. Dragados has said that
the work is scheduled to
be finished by the first half
of 2021.
No move for
many after
break-up
A SURVEY by insurer Direct
Line in the UK has found
that about one in 25 people
in the country are currently
living in a property with an
ex-spouse or partner.
The phone survey of several
thousand people found
that one in six people asked
had been through this at
some stage in their life.
Financial pressures are
by far the main reason with
by Simon Russell
a “clean break” not being as
simple as it sounds for many,
especially where a mortgage
is involved. The average
time between a separation
and one or both people moving
out Is four months.
The insurer said that
claims for breakages in the
home rose dramatically after
a break-up, indicating that
the situation is far from ideal
for all parties concerned.
The most popular item
broken was a laptop or
similar gadget, followed by,
despite the obvious cliché,
crockery and tableware.
Suspected theft of personal
goods and cash by partners
was also reported in a
number of cases, over half
those surveyed, usually at
the point of moving out.
IT takes pet lovers just
Its research involved more
“Studies with pet owners
have shown that gazing into
our dog’s eyes releases levels
of oxytocin in the brain and
this plays an important role
how dog owners bond and
form attachments with their
dogs, much in the same way
parents and children do.”
Professor Sir Cary Cooper,
The research was led
an expert in psychology by dog adoption website
and wellbeing at the University
dogsblog.com and Animal
of Manchester, says the Friends Insurance, who
study reveals a lot about our
relationship with our fourlegged
friends.
Scientists lay our emotions
to dogs firmly at the
door of the ‘love hormone’
want to debunk the myths
about adopting dogs and encourage
people to consider
taking that route.
Celebrities including Pete
Wicks, Charlotte Hawkins,
oxytocin, which is released Sarah Jayne Dunn and
into the brain and is elevated
when humans gaze into a
potential pet pooch’s eyes.
Prof Cooper says: “There
is a relatively close bond
between dogs and humans,
and it is certainly the case
that humans look for nonverbal
signs from dogs, such
as eye contact and facial
Beverley Knight have been
involved in the campaign.
Beverley and her husband
James O’Keefe were searching
for a dog to adopt last
year and found their perfect
pet in Spain. The soul
singer explained the instant
connection she felt to Zain
through a web browser.
She says: “My husband
James happened to be looking
through dogsblog.com
one day, he kind of did it
all the time, he was always
looking through and he had
left the page up.
“Out of curiosity I started
to look and I came across a
video of a black and white
dog playing with a white dog.
“I just thought ‘oh this
dog is so cute, look at his
little face’ and I found myself
reading the blurb about the
little black and white dog.
“He was described as a
dude and said his name
was Zain and he was about
nine-months-old. There was
something about the way
he was playing, just something
about him and I said
to James ‘come and have a
look, I think this might be
our dog’.
“We didn’t know what
breed he was but we started
to make enquiries with his
rescue, Angel’s Kiss. The
next thing was we were accepted
and he was winging
his way to us from Spain.”
The campaign also hopes
to help new dog owners understand
what lies ahead by
sharing the many fantastic
benefits of adopting a dog.
Another great donation to
the Albergue, Torrevieja
TWO very generous Rojales
ladies, Sofie and
Kelly, El Cubo Cleaning
Services, donated a variety
of light and heavy
blankets, beds and igloos
for our cats.
These igloos are fantastic.
Not only do they help keep
the cats warm during a cold
winter evening but also provides
a hidey hole for those
cats that are shy or just want
a bit of peace time. Thank
you very much ladies.
Health&Lifestyle
When a Cold
becomes a
Chest Infection
AT this time of year common
colds are at a peak
and unfortunately some
will turn into chest infections,
some of which can
be serious, or for some,
life threatening.
The main types of chest
infection are bronchitis
and pneumonia.
Most bronchitis cases are
caused by viruses, whereas
most pneumonia cases are
due to bacteria.
These types of infections
are usually spread when an
infected person coughs or
sneezes. This propels tiny
droplets of fluid containing
the virus or bacteria into
the air, where they can be
breathed in by others. Infections
can also be spread to
others if you cough or sneeze
onto your hand, an object or
a surface, and someone else
touches it before touching
their mouth or nose.
Some people are at a
higher risk of chest infection
including:
• babies and very
young children
• elderly people
• people who are
very overweight
• pregnant women
• people who smoke
• people with long-term
health conditions, such
as asthma, heart disease,
diabetes, kidney
disease, cystic fibrosis
or chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease
(COPD)
• people with a weakened
immune system – this
could be due to a recent
illness, chemotherapy
or a health condition,
such as an undiagnosed
HIV infection
In addition to general
symptoms of infection (headache,
aches & pains, lethargy
etc.) specific symptoms of a
chest infection can include:
• a persistent cough
• coughing up yellow or
green phlegm (thick
mucus),
• coughing up blood
• breathlessness or rapid
and shallow breathing
• wheezing
• a high temperature
(fever)
• a rapid heartbeat
• chest pain or tightness
• feeling confused
and disorientated
Many chest infections
aren't serious and get better
within a few days or weeks
and you may not need to see
your GP. While you recover
at home, you can improve
your symptoms by:
• getting plenty of rest
• drinking lots of fluid to
prevent dehydration and
to thin the mucus in your
lungs, making it easier
to cough up
• treating headaches,
fever and aches and
pains with painkillers
such as paracetamol or
ibuprofen
• drinking a warm drink
of honey and lemon to
relieve a sore throat
caused by persistent
coughing
Avoid cough medicines, as
there's little evidence they
work, and coughing actually
helps you clear the infection
more quickly by getting rid of
the phlegm from your lungs.
You should see your GP if:
• you think a child under
five has a chest infection
• you are 65 or over
• you are pregnant
• you have a long-term
health condition
• you feel very unwell
or your symptoms are
severe
• you have a persistent
fever
• your symptoms last
longer than two weeks
• you feel confused, disorientated
or drowsy
• you have chest pain or
difficulty breathing
• you cough up blood or
blood-stained phlegm
• your skin or lips develop
a blue tinge (cyanosis)
• you are very overweight
and have difficulty
breathing
• you have a weakened
immune system
Your GP should be able to
diagnose you based on your
symptoms and clinical examination.
Sometimes further
tests such as a chest X-ray,
breathing tests and testing
phlegm or blood samples may
be necessary.
Vaccinations:
If you are at an increased risk
of chest infections, your GP
may recommend being vaccinated
against flu and pneumococcal
infections. These
vaccinations should help reduce
your chances of getting
chest infections in the future.
Most chest infections get
better on their own but some
can be very serious. If in
doubt see your Family Doctor.
FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2019 35
Taking the stress
out of festive fun
MANY of us get swept
along by the idea of a perfect
Christmas but the
scale of financial pressure
that it brings can take
years to repay. And having
cash-worries isn’t the only
barrier to festive fun.
Counsellor and hypnotherapist
Susan Leigh has
put together her guide to
avoiding the stress that can
hinder having a happy holiday.
Her advice to everyone
is simple: “Plan now to make
it a happy Christmas!”
Gift shopping can be
fraught with difficulties, but
local markets and craft fairs
often sell interesting, locally
sourced foods, handmade
pictures and crafts, all making
relatively inexpensive
yet thoughtful gifts.
Agree an upper price limit
or children only rule for presents
or offer instead babysitting
vouchers, to bake a
cake, cook dinner, paint a
picture; genuine help can be
a real treat.
Children often appreciate
experiences and time together
most of all; bird-watching,
scrap-booking or preparing
and eating a picnic
together.
Fun times can be the most
valued gift of all, Susan says.
Investigate free events like
carol services and concerts.
Plan a walk or outdoors ball
game, or retrieve your board
games and cards and enjoy the
opportunity for conversation,
fun and friendly rivalry.
Also, plan family meals
and prepare as much in advance
as possible, so avoiding
unnecessary panic buying.
Delegate some tasks and
let others feel included, Susan
advises. Even children
can help.
If there’s dispute about
where Christmas is being
celebrated why not alternate
plans between Christmas
and New Year, or have
Christmas dinner on Boxing
Day or the weekend inbetween?
Remember to schedule
some ‘me’ time and have a
little personal space, Susan
adds. Record your favourite
TV programmes to watch
when you’re free.
She says: “Remember not
to panic if things go wrong.
They’re often the times that
people remember with affection,
the special memories
that make for the best kind
of Christmas Day.”
Lisbon, Portugal
THERE is a path waiting
to be taken. An emotion
just around the corner.
A heart that beats in the
stones of the pavements,
in the waters of the rivers
and the sea, in the golden
sands that stretch into
the distance, in the unparalleled
white light that
bathes the buildings, in
the people that live here
and in the testimonies to
their lives.
Unique and memorable
experiences, for those who
prefer the city, for those who
want to see monuments and
those who come to enjoy nature
and for everyone who
travels with all their senses.
A rich, diverse, and inviting
itinerary.
Just waiting for you to discover
and experience.
Bairro Alto, Bica,
Cais Do Sodré
Have some fun in Lisbon.
During the day, the historic
Bairro Alto and Bica quarters
fascinate visitors with
their picturesqueness and
neighbourhood feel.
At night everything changes
and a party atmosphere
prevails. The area is the epitome
of Lisbon nightlife, the
central axis around which a
good night out revolves.
Bairro Alto is cherished
for its history and for its restaurants,
bars and outdoor
cafés with views of the city.
From here, you can drop
down through Bica, and its
more offbeat bars, to Pink
Street in Cais do Sodré, fast
becoming the new focus of
Lisbon nightlife.
Baixa, Chiado and,
Av. Liberdade
The charm and elegance of
the city centre.
This is the central, and
unmissable, artery running
through the heart of Lisbon.
Walking down the Avenida
da Liberdade, you’ll find
numerous topflight international
brands along with
its trees and outdoor cafés
that draw you on to downtown
Lisbon.
At the Rossio, you can immediately
feel the history and
ambience of the real Lisbon.
Then, Rua Augusta points the
way, full of shops, restaurants
and street artists. At the other
end, opens out the Terreiro
do Paço and the majestic Arco
da Rua Augusta (Arch).
Another recommended
stop is the Lisbon Story
Centre, where you can explore
the main events in this
unique city’s two thousand
year-long history.
In Chiado, diversity and
modernity intermingle with
the history of the poets and
artists, who stamped their
mark on an age and who, in
the 19th Century, made this
a hothouse of literature and
poetry, full of contrasts and
irreverence that have made
the place so magical.
Parque Das Nações
A new Lisbon on
the waterfront.
The Park of Nations is
Lisbon at its most modern.
On the east side of town,
contemporary architecture
now covers a vast area of urban
regeneration. The most
notable buildings, the ones
everyone wants to see, are
the awning of the Pavilhão
de Portugal (Portugal Pavilion)
and the Gare de Oriente
(Oriente Train Station).
The numerous small
parks, many of them right
on the river, and the famous
cable car, make it a great
place for a family outing.
What’s more, the cultural
and pedagogical offer is extensive
and diverse. The Oceanário
(oceanarium) is one of the
biggest attractions, as well as,
the Museu de Conhecimento
– Ciência Viva (Museum of
Knowledge – Living Science,
here, you determine your own
experiences.
Belém
Heritage and history with a
special twist.
Belém is synonymous
with history and the Portuguese
discoveries. It was
from this historic location
that the great adventurers
set sail in their fragile caravels,
on a mission to discover
the world. The Mosteiro do
Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery)
and Torre de Belém
(Belém Tower), both UNES-
CO World Heritage sites,
are Manueline-style monuments,
whose imposing architectural
wealth transports
us back to the heyday
of the Portuguese Empire.
On your way there, pick
up a Pastel de Belém (Belém
pastry), one of the city’s most
famous edible titbits and
now well-known all over
the world.
will stay. Some of the accommodation
set on the hillside
have the best views of the
town, but be warned the walk
back can sometimes prove to
challenging (we got a
taxi on a few occasions!).
If you decide to stay somewhere
slightly easier to get in
and out of the town then don’t
pass up the chance to travel
on the cable car, this will take
you to the crest of Mount
Srd which looms 412 metres
above the city and undoubtedly
has the best views over
the city and beyond.
There are plenty of
churches, monasteries and
curious monuments of the
old town, including the city’s
Cathedral which is most definitely
worth a visit, it is one
of Dubrovnik’s large ensemble
of baroque architecture,
the interior artworks are a
must see.
If you have time, take a
day tour to Kravica waterfalls,
this tour typically also
includes a visit to a quaint
town in Bosnia called Mostar,
where you can enjoy
some of the local food, shop
at the many bazars and also
discover the UNESCO-listed
Old Bridge area.
But first you will visit the
stunning Kravica Waterfalls
where you can sightsee and
swim at your leisure.
Or take a tour to the Blue
Cave - a tour on a boat that
will take you to the most
beautiful underwater caves
and some of the best hidden
snorkelling areas around
Dubrovnik.
On sale in local travel
agents and hotels, there are
plenty of excursions offering
you the best way to explore
the area.
And as for nightlife! At
night there is an abundance
of bars and restaurants to
explore, one in particular
located on the outside of the
city wall called the Buza
Bar (although I imagine
there are many other similar
ones as well). A hidden
gem, this bar is difficult to
find, but once you are in, be
prepared to chill in an exclusive
setting, cocktail in
hand and stunning sunset to
watch. Well worth the effort
of finding the door to this
little secret!
Dubrovnik is connected to
Ferrari Roma:
La Nuova Dolce Vita
The Prancing Horse’s new V8 2+ coupé unveiled in Rome
THE new Ferrari Roma
has been unveiled to the
world’s media. The latest
coupé from Maranello features
timeless and sublimely
refined design and
has all the power and agility
required to guarantee a
unique driving experience.
Its signature Italian styling
is a contemporary reinterpretation
of the carefree
lifestyle of 1950s and ‘60s
Rome, from which it takes
its evocative name, Roma.
Stylistically, the Ferrari
Roma is characterised by
clean and symbiotic forms.
Its beautifully harmonious
proportions and elegantly
pure, balanced volumes are
very much in line with the
Ferrari mid-front-engined
grand touring tradition of
which the 250 GT Berlinetta
lusso and 250 GT 2+2 are
the most iconic examples,
and from which the car
takes its inspiration. It embodies
an extremely modern
design language which
underlines its authentic,
refined styling. At the same
time, its sleek lines retain
the sporty vocation shared
by all Ferraris.
To guarantee best-in-class
performance whilst still retaining
the stylistic purity
of its bloodline, Ferrari’s engineers
developed several
leading-edge technologies,
most notably a mobile rear
spoiler integrated into the
rear screen designed to
retain the car’s formal elegance
when retracted and
guarantee the downforce
essential for the Ferrari
Roma’s extraordinary performance
by automatically
deploying at high speeds.
The Prancing Horse’s new
2+ coupé sports a V8 turbo
engine that punches out
620 cv at 7,500 rpm, making
it the most powerful in
its segment. A member of the
V8 family that has won the
International Engine of the
Year four years in a row, it
features Variable Boost Management
for instantaneous
throttle response. With the
adoption of Gasoline Particulate
Filters, meticulous
attention was also focused
on the sound of the exhaust
system which has been completely
redesigned, removing
the silencers and introducing
new bypass valves.
The car’s new 8-speed dualclutch
gearbox is more compact
and 6 kg lighter than its
7- speed predecessor. As well
as reducing fuel consumption
and emissions, shifts are
faster and smoother which
makes the car even more
responsive on the open road,
but also especially comfortable
in town and during stop
& start driving situations.
The Ferrari Roma’s chassis
benefits from the modular
technology developed by
Ferrari for its new generation
models. Both bodyshell
and chassis have been redesigned
to incorporate the
latest weight reduction and
advanced production technologies.
In fact, 70% of its
components are entirely
new. The mid-front-engined
2+ Ferrari Roma has the best
weight/power ratio in its segment
(2.37 kg/cv) which enhances
handling dynamics
and responsiveness.
The Ferrari Roma features
Ferrari’s cutting-edge
vehicle dynamics systems,
the most notable example
being the Side Slip Control
6.0 (a first on a Ferrari GT
car) with 5- position manet-
tino and Ferrari Dynamic Centre designers developed
Enhancer which controls a new formal approach that
yaw angle by hydraulically
adjusting brake pressure at
the callipers.
The approach taken by
the Ferrari Styling Centre
for the Roma’s exterior centres
around clean design and
absolute symbiosis between
its various elements with
harmonious proportions and
pure, elegant volumes. The
car is clothed in long, ultrasleek
lines that sweep back
from the front bonnet, highlighting
the spare silhouette
of the flanks and the compact,
set-back fastback cabin
volume. To underscore that
formal minimalism, all superfluous
detailing has been
removed: for example, radiator
cooling is guaranteed by
a monolithic surface that is
perforated only where necessary,
creating a new radiator
grille concept. The full-LED
involved the creation of two
separate cells, one each for
driver and passenger, in an
evolution of the dual cockpit
concept that embraces the
entire cabin rather than just
the dashboard as was previously
the case. The crafting
of the interior took its lead
from the complete redesign
of the HMI. This resulted in
a major leap forward, starting
with the new steering
wheel designed using the
“Eyes on the road, hands on
the wheel” philosophy with
all the car’s main commands
actioned by haptic controls,
ensuring the driver doesn’t
have to move their hands
from the wheel. The 16” digital
instrument cluster provides
all the necessary information,
while the central
display with an 8.4” vertical
screen and a new passenger
adaptive headlights are traversed
display are exceptionally
by a horizontal light
strip that hints at the structure
beneath the car’s skin,
bringing a sense of tension
to the entire circumference
of the car. The wraparound
rear screen incorporates an
active aero device to preserve
that signature purity
of form, while the twin taillight
assembly is set like a
gem into the volume.
For the Ferrari Roma’s
cabin, the Ferrari Styling
intuitive and user-friendly.
The new Ferrari key with
“Comfort Access” function
allows the driver to open
the car by touching a button
next to the new flush handle
in the door. Lastly, the Matrix
LED headlights and
optional Ferrari advanced
driver assistance systems
(ADAS), including adaptive
Cruise Control, make dayto-day
and longer journeys a
very relaxing experience.

UNIMPRESSIVE
BRITAIN’S oldest dog breeds are dying out
as popularity has waned in favour of the
more ‘fashionable’ Continental breeds like
the Labrador.
Several historic native British breeds like the
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Boxer and
the Border Terrier have all been taken out of the
UK’s top ten dogs, according to data released by
dog welfare organisation the Kennel Club.
Numbers of the English Pointer, an old favourite,
show that new registrations have dropped to
historic lows and the classic family dog is now at
risk of extinction.
Taking the top spot, the Labrador, has reclaimed
the throne as Britain’s top dog following
the short reign of the à la mode French Bulldog.
Small breeds have also grown in popularity
because they are seen as easier to handle in a
city environment than say the Pointer, which has
boundless energy and a love of exercise, earning
them a reputation offing difficult to handle.
DELIVERY
A DISGRUNTLED customer
says a parcel was thrown her
bathroom window and straight
into her toilet, ruining her new
loudspeakers.
Rebeka Alam had ordered the
package on Yodel last month and
received an email telling her it
had been delivered while she was
at work.
After returning home she was
handed a note by her mum’s partner
telling her the package had
been dropped through ‘the open
window [at the] side of the house’.
She prayed the loo seat had
been left down but her worst fears
were confirmed when she went
to the bathroom to find her new
speakers ruined by toilet water.
Rebeka, from Scunthorpe,
North Lincolnshire, says Yodel
have washed their hands of the
problem by telling her to complain
to the seller instead of them.
The company have said that
“they will be taking appropriate
action with the driver”, but
have offered Rebeka nothing
in compensation.
IMITATION
A COUPLE who bought a packet of
roasted vegetables from Waitrose were
dismayed to find it was labelled from
Aldi.
They ordered the veg on Ocado, and it arrived
seemingly fine, with the front of the
packet reading as expected.
Its underside told a different story, however,
saying it had been ‘specially prepared’
for the budget supermarket.
The husband, who wanted to remain
anonymous, said: ‘I was really disappointed.
I use Waitrose and Ocado for good reasons
– reputation and home delivery. And I
pay for the privilege.´
‘No disrespect to Aldi or their customers
but if I wanted their products I’d go to one
of their stores.´
A Waitrose spokesman said: ‘We are sorry
that there has been an error with the labelling
at our suppliers and we are now looking
into this.´
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A black-andwhite
crossword-style grid is set up for
each quote, with a number of letters
“hovering” above each column. Your task
is to “drop” each of those letters into
the appropriate square in each column,
until the entire quote is revealed. All
punctuation (commas, periods, dashes,
etc.) has been removed. Good luck!
Texas Scramble and Singles K/O Final
TODAY (November 15th),
Montgo played a Texas
Scramble event.
Our sponsors, Arthur and
Sally Burrowes, donated a
grand selection of prizes.
John Ross, Liz Butler,
Glenys and Neil Cuming,
with 63.4 points, claimed
first place.
Second place was secured
by Stella Fox, Feli Baybut
and Julia Hall, with
65.3 points.
Third was Franz Budnick,
Brian Baybut, Barry Butler
and Heiko Schram, with
67.6 points.
NTP second shot on the
fifth was George Braddick.
No lady contested it.
NTP on 16th was Stella
and Steve Crossan.
Two’s today were scored
by Stella, who won two balls,
and Steve, just the one!
Our guest Dirk Knape also
received a valuable sleeve of
Montgo balls.
Our Singles Knockout final,
sponsored by Geoff Willcock,
was fought out between
Tom Atkinson and Richard
Fox, with Richard victorious
and being presented with
the magnificent Cup.
Next week is our Champions
Cup and Alternative
Comp for non-qualifiers,
sponsored by John Feek.
Marina Alta Golf Society’s Autumn Trophy
ON Monday 18th November
2019, the 17 members
of the Marina Alta Golf Society
met at the Oliva Nova
course to play in a single
Stableford game, which
will see the winner take
home the Autumn Trophy.
This game for the trophy
had to be postponed in mid-
October due to heavy rain
over the course, causing some
flooding. It is one of the “big”
events in the society’s golfing
calendar, as the trophy is
much sort after.
An Interesting fact, re the
players after this prize, is
that the trophy has been won
by six members playing today
and, out of that number,
four have been the captain of
the society at some point and
I’m sure all of them, plus the
current captain, are keen to
take it home at the end of
the game.
Today, just the one lady
guest is joining them as they
prepare to tee off in overcast
skies and some black rain
clouds floating about and a
slight chill in the wind. The
weather soon picked up and
it proved to be a fine day for
golf.
The results are as follows:
In first place, with 34
points and playing off a 21
handicap, was Keith Cottrell,
last week’s winner.
Well done Keith.
Second place, with 33
points, was Andrew Brown
playing off a 24 handicap.
Third place, on countback,
was Keith Sinden with 32
points and playing off a 20
handicap. Keith was the
winner of the Trophy last
year. (I understand a slow
start on the front nine may
have been at fault today,
which prevented him taking
the prize home for a second
time in a row. Something
that has never been done).
In fourth place was Peter
Gardiner, also with 32
points, off a 22 handicap.
Just the one ‘2’ today, Allan
McManus on hole 16.
NTP winners were, on
hole 3 and hole 5 in 2, was
Dave O’Meara, while on hole
16 Allan McManus was the
winner. Dave Reid, in two
shots, took the prize on hole
18. Well done to all.
Now some players get a
birdie on some holes, while
others just get pars if they are
lucky. It is not often recorded
that a player got a birdie and
a par on the same hole.
So, today while past Cap-
Pete Gardiner, Dave Reid, Keith Cottrell, Allan McManus, Keith Sinden, Dave O’Meara
tain Tony Stevens was playing
hole 16, his ball hit one
of the birds running around
the hole and then he parred
the hole to archive just that
distinction. Not bad for an
old guy.
Another past winner of
the trophy, and also past
Captain, lost 10 balls during
his game. Mom’s the word
who it was.
The Marina Alta Golf Society
is a small, but friendly
group of players, who play
every Monday at the Oliva
Nova course with first Tee
time being about 10.40.
If you want to join this
friendly group of golfers as a
guest, then a warm welcome
will be waiting for you. Anyone
interested, please contact
Javea Green Top Winter League
THE top two teams in the
Winter League met each
other last week and a fabulous
mornings bowling
was enjoyed, especially
by Javea.
The result was 10-2 to the
home side, which ensured
they leapfrogged their visitors
from San Luis and took
a three point lead at the top
of the league.
Great wins were earned
by the teams skipped by
Captain Derek Eldon, Chris
Facebook: @TheWeekenderSpain
Back to action
by Alex Trelinski
SPAIN’S top-flight women footballers
temporarily suspended
their strike on Monday, after
they edged closer to securing
a collective deal over pay and
conditions.
The strike led to the postponement
of last weekend’s women’s Primera
Division games but this weekend’s
matches will go ahead as scheduled.
The Association of Spanish Footballers
said that players had agreed
to halt the strike and resume working
until December 20th after receiving
an offer from the ministry for employment
which guaranteed players
a minimum salary of €16,000 per
year as well as full-time contracts.
FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 2019 45
Sport
New green challenge
by Alex Trelinski
BRITAIN’S Billy Monger has been named as
one of the latest racers on the Extreme E
championship drivers’ programme.
Extreme E, set to launch in 2021, is an environment-focused
racing series in which 12 teams race
off-road in fully electric SUVs in five remote locations
around the world to highlight the effects of
climate change.
Monger is a double leg amputee after suffering
serious injuries in a high-speed Formula 4 crash at
Donington Park in 2017.
The 20-year-old returned to competition earlier
this year with Carlin Racing in the Euroformula
series in a car with specially adapted hand controls.
“Fighting climate change is incredibly important,”
Monger said.
“Everything we do now will affect future generations.
It’s definitely a responsibility, and one that I
can’t and won’t just ignore.”
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
INTERNATIONAL BREAK 3
AS the Premier League
and Alfaz Fantasy Football
League take a rest due
to the third International
break of the season, it
gives us another chance
to review what has happened
so far in the A.F.F.L.
and also take a look at
how the Mini-Leagues are
shaping up.
With just over a third of
the season gone, all the Main
Leagues, with the exception
of the Junior League, have
been very competitive with
no particular team taking a
big advantage at the top.
In our Main League, six
different teams have made
their way to the top in the
first 12 weeks. The present
leaders, Chris’s Promotion
Again, have just taken over
the top spot from Kapur’s
Napali Eleven, who had
been at the summit for six
weeks.
Tony Red’s Miles Platting
Swifts were flying high at
the top in the first two weeks
before giving way to two of
our lady manager’s teams.
Jayne’s Up the Dale and
Isobel’s team The Bluebells
both had a brief one week
spell at the top, along with
Keith’s team Max & Paddy.
The Junior League has
been dominated by three
teams, Ginger Ninjar, Olly
11 and the current leaders
Lucky Red F.C, who at present
have a comfortable 27
point gap over Ginger Ninjar.
Only two other teams have
managed to climb to the top
of this section and they were
last seasons Junior Champions
William & Henry and
Frankie’s side More Than
a Game.
Isobel’s team, The Bluebells,
have spent seven
weeks at the top of our Mark
Carter Ladies Section, which
is the longest this season.
Annette’s Hairnette became
the fifth team to scale the
summit when, last week,
they took over from The
Bluebells.
Up the Dale (2weeks),
Vicepresident United and
Foxy Filberts have also enjoyed
the view from the top.
Pauline’s Vodka Army, Liz’s
Cookies Crew and Sarah’s
Lucy’s Luck have been
knocking on the door, so it
will be interesting to see
how it all pans out as the
girls start jostling for a top
three position.
Across the Costa’s Golden
Boot League, the competition
has been fierce with no
fewer than nine teams contesting
for the number one
spot. Chris’s team Promotion
Again started the season off
near the bottom and they
have been steadily climbing
and have finally reached the
top by taking over from Martin’s
Marauders, albeit by a
single point.
Bill’s East Fifers have
forced their way into the
top three and left the early
front-runners Lucky Red
F.C. Athletico Higgo, Lucy’s
Luck, Showbiz and Pompey
Hammers trailing in
their wake.
Martin’s Marauders have
taken charge of our Champion
of Champions League after
taking over from Max &
Paddy, who had topped this
section for five weeks.
Only two other teams
have reached the summit
and they are Macca’s Albir
Villains (three weeks)
and Paulines Vodka Army
(one week).
The four teams who look
likely to be awarded a Wooden
Spoon at the end of the
season are Terry’s Could it
be This Year (Boot League),
Lyn’s Handbrake City (Ladies
League & Main League),
Gil’s Kippax (Champions
League) and definately Romeo’s
My Dad Supports
Liverpool (Junior League).
The highest score so far
this season is 72 points,
which was ammassed by two
teams, Miles Platting Swifts
and Promotion Again, while
the lowest score goes to Jennie’s
Madam Tree, who only
managed a minus four.
The Premier League, up
to now, has provided the
A.F.F.L. with 372 goals, (37
more than last season), 63
clean sheets (five less than
last season), 466 yellow
cards (68 more than last
year) and 12 red cards (wow
five less than last season).
There has also been 14 own
goals and 27 penalties, which
is 10 down on last season.
I’m not going to comment
on VAR (it’s a joke). Six pens
were awarded to Manchester
United, of which two were
missed (there is a God).
The Premier League has
been completely dominated
by Liverpool, who have only
dropped two points, which
has helped them go eight
points clear of Leicester City
and Chelsea.
The top Fantasy League
players are as follows:
Top Keeper is Kasper
Schmeichel with 36 points,
five more than Sheffield
United’s young on-loan
Keeper from Manchester
United, Henderson.
Most People would say
the best two full-backs in
the Premier League are at
Liverpool, with Arnold and
Robertson in the running,
but according to the Fantasy
League, the best two fullbacks
are at Leicester, with
Pereira (46) and Chilwell
(50) who have 96 points compared
to the Liverpool duo’s
72.
Liverpool do have the top
midfield players in Mane
(62) and Salah (58). The
nearest player to them is
Manchester City’s Kevin De
Bruyne, with 56.
Up front we have the top
Fantasy player so far this
season, with Leicester City’s
in-form striker Jamie Vardy,
with 92 points. Aguero is in
second place with 70 points.
Top player in our Across
the Costa’s Golden Boot
League is also Leicester
City’s quicksilver marksman
Jamie Vardy, with 55 points
(don’t forget forwards score
five points per goal, while
midfielders get seven points
and defenders score 10
points for every goal scored).
Raheem Sterling and Mane
are in joint second place on
49 points.
The leading teams in
our nine Mini-Leagues are
as follows:
Milton Keyes F.C. (Hepburns),
Ginger Ninjar (Las
Vegas Clan), The Bluebells
(Kasbrane Blues), East Fifers
(The Local), Lucky Red
F.C. (Winning Post), Sam’s
Army (C.B.E.S.), Infidels
F.C. (Drunken Duck), Promotion
Again (Lills Lounge) and
finally, Hannakins are top in
the Magic Moments League.
The draw for the second
round of our K.O. Cup,
which takes place the weekend
30th November, is now
up on our website.
The new Favourites Promotion
Again are drawn
against Dave’s team Patangyangkipperbang
(it’s easy
for you to say), while last
season’s winners of this cup,
Martin’s Marauders, will
play Dave’s Milton Keyes
F.C.
Well, that’s the last International
Break over ‘till next
March, so let’s hope all our
players come back fit and well
and ready to go again as we
approach the heavy fixture
programme ahead.

Forging forward
GARETH Southgate says
his England side are “further
ahead” than they
were at the corresponding
stage of qualifying for the
2018 World Cup.
Southgate’s side finished
fourth at the finals in Russia
and go to Euro 2020 next
summer as one of the top
seeds.
England’s 4-0 win over
Kosovo on Sunday rounded
off another impressive
qualifying campaign for
Southgate’s squad, who
topped Group A after winning
seven of their eight
fixtures.
“I think the team have belief,
for sure, you can see the
confidence,” Southgate said.
“They have got the confidence
to control games with
possession, and they know
by Alex Trelinski
they’re going to score goals.”
“We’re definitely further
ahead than we were heading
into Russia, but we made
massive strides in this period
when we went into Russia.”
The draw for the finals
will be made a week on
Saturday (November 30th)
in Bucharest.
Two wheel legends
by Alex Trelinski
SPAIN’S six-time MotoGP
champion Marc Marquez
won Sunday´s final race
of the season in Valencia
to round off a superb
campaign, as his fellowcountryman,
Jorge Lorenzo
retired from the sport.
Marquez(pictured alongside
Honda colleague Lorenzo
after the race), secured
his latest world title by winning
in Thailand in October,
and made it 12 wins for the
season after starting second
on the grid.
“It’s been a perfect season,”
said Marquez. “It will
be difficult to repeat.”
French rider Fabio Quartararo,
who started on pole,
came second.
Spain’s three-time MotoGP
champion Jorge Lorenzo
finished 13th in his final
race before retiring.
The 32-year-old received
rapturous applause from
fans after the race.
Spain´s Maverick Vinales
came fourth on Sunday to secure
him third place in the final
standings behind Italy´s
Andrea Dovizioso.
Heroic Ramsey
by Alex Trelinski
WALES secured qualification
for Euro 2020 as Aaron
Ramsey marked his return
to the team with two
goals to inspire a 2-0 win
over Hungary on Tuesday
night.
Ramsey, starting for the
first time in this campaign,
headed in from Gareth Bale's
first-half cross to fuel a carnival
atmosphere at a heaving
Cardiff City Stadium.
A superb double save
from Wayne Hennessey kept
Hungary at bay and then, 90
seconds into the second half,
Ramsey calmly controlled
the ball in the penalty area
before stroking it into the
top corner.
Next summer's European
Championship will be
Wales' second in succession,
a remarkable transformation
for a country which had to
endure 58 barren years between
its first appearance at
a major tournament, the 1958
World Cup, and its second at
Euro 2016.
JOSE’S
CAPITAL
START
JOSE Mourinho has a
lunchtime London derby
to look forward to tomorrow
lunchtime in his first
match in charge of Tottenham,
after Tuesday’s
shock sacking of Mauricio
Pochettino.
Former Chelsea and
Manchester United boss
Mourinho has signed a contract
until the end of the
2022-23 season, and takes
his new side to West Ham,
who are only a point behind
them in the table.
by Alex Trelinski
It seems like a long time
ago since Tottenham reached
the Champions League final
last season under Pochettino,
but lost 2-0 to Liverpool
in Madrid.
Spurs languish in 14th
place in the Premier League,
some 11 points off the top
four in the table, with club
chairman believing that
Mourinho can bring them
success. in 2008.
Levy said Mourinho has
“a wealth of experience,
can inspire teams and is a
great tactician”.
“He has won honours at
every club he has coached,”
he added. “We believe he will
bring energy and belief to
the dressing room.”
Mourinho was sacked by
Manchester United almost
a year ago, with the club 19
points behind league leaders
Liverpool, and had not
managed another side before
joining Spurs.
At the other end of the
table, runaway leaders Liverpool
go to mid-table Crystal
Palace tomorrow afternoon,
whilst an entertaining and
enterprising Leicester City
who are eight points behind
them, also are on their travels
with a trip to Brighton.
The two teams behind the
Foxes, Manchester City and
Chelsea meet at the Etihad
this Saturday early evening,
and new boys Sheffield United,
who are enjoying Premier
League life, will look to keep
their fifth placing as they
welcome Manchester United
to Bramall Lane on Sunday.
